Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

School climate is a complex system involving norms, goals, values, relationships, practices and organizational structures. It includes the composition of the school and school practices. School composition encompasses the social and economic characteristics of a school, whereas school practice includes administrative leadership and the utilization of resources (Anyon et al., 2016; Opdenakker & Van Damme, 2006; Rumberger & Palardy, 2005; Thapa et al., 2013). If students do not feel their needs are being met by their school environment their emotional, psychological and academic needs are at risk (Cohen et al., 2009; Connell & Welborn, 1991; Libbey, 2004). Black students in …

Are U.S. Schools Obsolete?: Examining An Anti-Black Carceral System Of Schooling, Re’Nyqua Farrington

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

When studying the link between U.S. prisons and schools, educational research widely relies on the school-to-prison pipeline (STTP) to understand how students are funneled from the schoolhouse to the jailhouse. However, this track critiques the STTP framework for its limitations in understanding how schools operate like prisons for Black students. Further, this track applies a prison abolitionist perspective to analyze the function of schooling for Black students and suggests that Black educational justice and liberation exist outside of the modern-day schoolhouse. Thus, this track begins by specifying the connections between U.S. schools and prison abolition. It goes on to explicate …

Entangled Positionality: Researchers’ Everyday Practices Amidst Coronavirus, War, And Parenting, Vlas Nikulkin, Olga Zvonareva

The Qualitative Report

Reflecting on the researcher’s position is crucial for understanding how data are gathered, analyzed, and presented. However, researcher positionality is often reckoned through overly deterministic and rigid social statuses. This is problematic, as intertwined everyday practices of researchers’ living and doing fieldwork are diverse and messy. By reflecting on ethnographic research in Russia during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the wake of the Russo-Ukrainian war, we elaborate an alternative way to speak of and identify the researcher’s position. Using the concept of “entanglement,” we describe how researchers’ everyday practices together with large-scale events, researchers’ social statuses, personal lives, and mundane …

Sino-Russian Cross-Border Tourism, Vladislav Chernov, Liubov Skavronskaya, Mariia Perelygina, Alexandra Bec, Elham Falatoonitoosi

Books / Book chapters

Geographic periphery regions are the focus of sustainable regional development research, with ongoing discussions on coreperiphery relationships to address economic disadvantage and remoteness. However, periphery regions face challenges due to the high efficiency of core regions. Tourism provides an alternative economic landscape, revitalizing stagnant sectors and driving strategic exploration. The Sino-Russian border, spanning 4,209 km, represents a periphery where tourism plays a vital role. This chapter views Sino-Russian cross-border tourism through the lens of the coreperiphery model, suggests two conceptual models of developing experiential cores in the cross-border areas of geographic peripheries, and argues for peripheries’ potential to become sustainable …

The Cultural Relevance Of The Well-Being Promotion Program, Gabrielle Francis Mar 2024

The Cultural Relevance Of The Well-Being Promotion Program, Gabrielle Francis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Schools are well-situated to be a primary setting to provide mental health services to youth. In fact, most minoritized students who receive mental health services do so through school (Ali et al., 2019). However, even school-based mental health services are not equitably accessed and provided for diverse populations of students, and minoritized students are less likely to have their mental health needs met in schools (Gudiño et al., 2009; Thomas et al., 2011). There are several reasons for the disparity in mental health services amongst students including the cultural relevance of interventions (Santiago-Rosario et al., 2021) and the early departure …

The Impact Of Applied Mental Health Classes On Eudaimonia, Gratitude, And Heart Rate Variability, Derek Charles Bartlett

Theses and Dissertations

Rates of depression, anxiety, and stress have been increasing and college students are especially at risk. College counseling centers often have long waitlists and have difficulty addressing the growing need for psychotherapy. Researchers have suggested that depression and anxiety may arise because of low levels of eudaimonia and self-compassion. Depression and anxiety not only have a toll on mental health but on physical health as well, as researchers have observed decreased HRV in individuals with depression and anxiety. To address the disparity between available resources and treatment need, applied mental health classes were developed to see if teaching psychotherapeutic principles …

Western Science And Eastern Zen To Seek The Origin Of Truth: Philosophical Background Of Scale Modeling, Kozo Saito Mar 2024

Western Science And Eastern Zen To Seek The Origin Of Truth: Philosophical Background Of Scale Modeling, Kozo Saito

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

This article was written to introduce philosophical background of scale modeling, where Zen philosophy was applied to overcome the limitation of logical thinking and hypotheses-driven deductive science. Three specific reasons are as follows. The first is related to the law approach in scale modeling; it uses the kufu principle, originated in Zen Buddhism, together with the other three scientific methods: experimental, theoretical, and computational. The second reason is because scale modeling seeks relativistic understanding by attempting to realize similarity; the concept is closer to Eastern philosophy rather than absolute understanding cultivated by deductive science. The third is in the educational …

BACKGROUND: Although whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is the preferred genotyping method for most genomic analyses, limitations are often experienced when studying genomes characterized by a high percentage of repetitive elements, high linkage, and recombination deserts. The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), for example, has a genome comprising up to 72% repetitive elements, and therefore we set out to develop a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip to be more cost-effective. Aedes albopictus is an invasive species originating from Southeast Asia that has recently spread around the world and is a vector for many human diseases. Developing an accessible genotyping platform is essential in …

METHODS: This study utilized an anonymous voluntary survey that was distributed to members of the American College of Surgeons through the association's electronic weekly newsletter. The survey was advertised weekly for three consecutive weeks. The survey included questions regarding surgeons' management of perioperative pain in patients with opioid use …

Genre Analysis Of Promotional Texts: Rhetorical Patterns And Metadiscursive Features Of Teaching Philosophy Statements, Khalid Alghamdi Mar 2024

Genre Analysis Of Promotional Texts: Rhetorical Patterns And Metadiscursive Features Of Teaching Philosophy Statements, Khalid Alghamdi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A growing body of academic writing literature has been devoted to studying the rhetorical patterns and language use in diverse academic texts. One of the central goals of these studies is to demystify these texts to acquaint writers, particularly less experienced ones, with the genre conventions. However, Teaching Philosophy Statements (TPS) as a critical academic genre have received insubstantial attention in the literature. TPSs are major gatekeeping practices in academia that play a significant role in controlling access to academic positions and opportunities, where an insufficient grasp of their conventions might affect an individual's academic future.

This study is pedagogically …
