A Case Study Of Women And Their Philanthropic Roles At The Girl Scout Council Of St. Croix Valley, Stephanie Mary Lauinger Pommier
Theses and Graduate Projects
Increasingly, women of every race and ethnicity are moving into professional roles as business owners, doctors and leaders in the community. Women's philanthropy is important and the need to understand women as leaders in philanthropy in the decades ahead will intensify.
To understand the nature of women's philanthropy, it is essential to answer the following questions. What motivates women to give of their time and money to non-profit organizations? Why is philanthropy important to women? What makes Girl Scout philanthropy unique?
This study explores what motivates women to be involved in a philanthropic role at the Girl Scout Council of …

Examining Political Orientation, Attributional Style, And Affirmative Action, Derrick A. Boone
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The correlations among political orientation, attributional style, emotion, and support for Affirmative Action were investigated. Questionnaire data were collected from a university sample in southern California. The results indicate a positive correlation between political orientation and attributional style. A ,negative correlation was found between attributional style and anger, and a positive correlation was found between attributional style and sympathy. Additionally, anger correlated negatively with support for Affirmative Action, while sympathy correlated positively with support Affirmative Action. These findings •are congruent with previous research (Zucker and Weiner, 1993) indicating correlations among political orientation, attributional style, emotion, and support for Welfare policies.
Ecological Influences On Adolescent Behavior, Michelle Moon
Ecological Influences On Adolescent Behavior, Michelle Moon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study examined the ecological influences, outlined by Bronfenbrenner (1994), to understand adolescent behavior. It was hypothesized that proximal ecological influences would be significantly related to behavioral outcomes. Participants (N= 244) were students attending traditional and continuation high schools in a Southern California school district. They completed a 15-page questionnaire that included scales used to assess the ecological domains of Family Process, Peers, Community (school climate), Personal Characteristics, and the criterion measures of Drug and Alcohol Use, School Performance and Gang and Criminal Activity.
Principal axis factor extraction with oblique rotation was performed on predictor variables related to the ecological …
Predictors Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Chronic Low Back Pain Patients, Lorie Tulia Decarvalho
Predictors Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Chronic Low Back Pain Patients, Lorie Tulia Decarvalho
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The present study investigated the predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity level in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Research questions focused on whether or not patients with CLBP would evidence clinically-significant levels of PTSD, whether or not the intensity and duration of the trauma would predict PTSD symptoms, and whether or not the age of the patient and perceived uncontrollability would positively predict PTSD symptom severity level. Participants included 161 patients receiving treatment for their CLBP from several Southern California chronic pain clinics, as well as major Southern California chiropractic facilities. Data was gathered through selfreport …
Discriminatory Analysis Of The Children's Depression Inventory, Montez Vaughn
Discriminatory Analysis Of The Children's Depression Inventory, Montez Vaughn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) was designed as a screening measure to assess the severity of depressive symptomatology experienced by school-aged children. This study attempted to determine the discriminatory capacity of the CDI among clinical populations. The subjects included 115 children ages 7 to 17, 6 female, 109 male. Twenty-two were Caucasian, 63 were Hispanic, 26 were Black. The study population was primarily homogeneous for the diagnosis of Conduct Disorder, incarcerated adolescent males (ages 16 to 17), limiting generalizability and findings.
Total Scores were not found to discriminate depressed subjects from non-depressed subjects. Total Scores were found to distinguish incarcerated …
Radiation Effects On Dopamine-Mediated Prepulse Inhibition In The C57bl/6 Mouse, Cara Nicole Zuccarelli Miller
Radiation Effects On Dopamine-Mediated Prepulse Inhibition In The C57bl/6 Mouse, Cara Nicole Zuccarelli Miller
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study examined the effects of proton and gamma radiation on a dopamine-dependent sensory gating mechanism: prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex. The purpose of this research was to describe potential hazards of proton radiation to the central nervous system in long-term space fight and for proton therapy patients. Results from previous research indicate that startle behavior is modified by proton and iron radiation. Forty-eight 10-½ week old, male C57BL/6 mice were used to characterize the optimal parameters for the model (prepulse duration, probe duration, and stimulus-onset-asynchrony). Three hundred and fifty two mice were used to characterize the time course …
Validation Of A Serotonin Checklist In A Parkinson’S Disease Population, Kelly Diane Darby-Holder
Validation Of A Serotonin Checklist In A Parkinson’S Disease Population, Kelly Diane Darby-Holder
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Although the distinctive pathological marker of Parkinson’s Disease is the progressive death of neurons that produce dopamine, there are also alterations in the production of quantities of other neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin that contribute to the disease. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) can be divided into two distinct classes based on the manifestation of motor symptoms, Type A and Type B Parkinson’s Disease. Type B PD patients often manifest symptoms in which serotonin deficiency plays an important role, which often includes a history of depression. Within the brain and spinal cord serotonin has wide spread projections, acting as an important …
For A Few Euros More: Campaign Spending Effects In The Irish Local Elections Of 1999, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Marsh
For A Few Euros More: Campaign Spending Effects In The Irish Local Elections Of 1999, Kenneth Benoit, Michael Marsh
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Although perceived by candidates and parties as important in affecting political outcomes, the link between spending and success in multi-candidate, multiparty election campaigns remains unproven. Not only are there relatively few studies of campaign spending effects in multi-party systems, there are none examining the effect under the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral system. Our study examines spending effects in the Irish local elections of 1999 using STV with district magnitudes between 3 and 7 seats, contested by a median of 10 candidates in each district. Using detailed data on 1,838 candidates from 180 local constituencies and 30 councils, we provide …

Forecasting The Nursing Home Population, Darius Lakdawalla, Jay Bhattacharya, Dana Goldman, Michael Hurd, Geoffrey Joyce, Constantijn Panis
Darius N. Lakdawalla
Objective. To forecast growth in the US nursing home population, as a function of trends in disability and marriage.
Methods. Nursing home residence is modeled as a function of disability status, marital status, and other demographic covariates. Our predictions for nursing home residence are built upon joint forecasts of marriage and disability. We use data from the 1992 to 1996 Medicare Current Beneficiary Surveys, which are individual-level data sets designed to be representative of the US population older than the age of 65.
Results. Today's young cohorts will have higher rates and levels of institutionalization than their older counterparts. …

Conference report presented at the NASIG 18th annual conference held in 2003. Portland State University Library's fund allocation committee presented information and practical advice on the process of developing a model to reallocate funding for library materials. After experimenting with funding ratios, they decided to use their model to reallocate 30 percent of the funds earmarked for discipline-specific materials while protecting 70 percent of each discipline's original allocation.

Institutions And The Business Cycle, Howard J. Sherman
Institutions And The Business Cycle, Howard J. Sherman
HOWARD J SHERMAN
Feudal European political-economic institutions included a self-sufficient manor with very little market exchange, barter rather than money, and production motivated only by the need of the manor rather than a profit. All of these institutions meant that a business cycle was impossible, though there were many other problems. Capitalist institutions include production only for market exchange, a monetary economy, and production motivated only by profit. All of these institutions make possible the business cycle--since a contraction may occur if there is insufficient monetary demand to buy the supply at a price including a profit.

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
This study examined the relationships of the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality (SNAP) model of personality to 4 targeted personality disorders (PDs) in a large multisite sample of patients. Data were examined from 529 patients, who were assigned 1 of 5 primary diagnoses: borderline, schizotypal, avoidant, and obsessive–compulsive PDs and major depression without PD. Patients were administered the SNAP questionnaire and results were compared among diagnostic groups and between patient groups and nonclinical norms. Results indicated that the dimensions of the model appear to have considerable promise in differentiating normal from abnormal personality, particularly in the propensity of individuals …

Technology Education And Integrated Learning For Adult Learners, Karen K. Lawson
Technology Education And Integrated Learning For Adult Learners, Karen K. Lawson
MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019
Adult learning and achievement in technology education can be enhanced through the process of integrated learning, rather than through learning skills in isolation. An integrated learning program helps provide the opportunity for instructors to help their students make connections and form relationships across the boundaries of classroom, discipline, skill, and background. Situated cognition refers to the idea that cognitive processes (including thinking and learning) are located in physical and social contexts. By providing technology education using information contexts (histories, stories, explanations, backgrounds), adult learners can draw on both what they have learned in life and are learning in the classroom.
