On The Empirical Content Of Quantal Response Equilibrium, Philip A. Haile, Ali Hortaçsu, Grigory Kosenok Aug 2003

On The Empirical Content Of Quantal Response Equilibrium, Philip A. Haile, Ali Hortaçsu, Grigory Kosenok

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The quantal response equilibrium (QRE) notion of McKelvey and Palfrey (1995) has recently attracted considerable attention, due in part to its widely documented ability to rationalize observed behavior in games played by experimental subjects. However, even with strong a priori restrictions on unobservables, QRE imposes no falsifiable restrictions: it can rationalize any distribution of behavior in any normal form game. After demonstrating this, we discuss several approaches to testing QRE under additional maintained assumptions.

Towards A Role-Based Metadata Scheme For Educational Digital Libraries: A Case Study In Singapore, Dian Melati Md Ismail, Ming Yin, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim Aug 2003

Towards A Role-Based Metadata Scheme For Educational Digital Libraries: A Case Study In Singapore, Dian Melati Md Ismail, Ming Yin, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we describe the development of an appropriate metadata scheme for GeogDL, a Web-based digital library application containing past-year examination resources for students taking a Singapore national examination in geography. The new metadata scheme was developed from established metadata schemes on education and e-learning. Initial evaluation showed that a role-based approach would be more viable, adapting to the different roles of teachers/educators and librarians contributing geography resources to GeogDL. The paper concludes with concrete implementation of the role-based metadata schema for GeogDL.

An Integrated Framework: Applying Attitude Theory To Environmental Concern & Public Support For Environmental Policy, Aaron Scott Routhe Aug 2003

An Integrated Framework: Applying Attitude Theory To Environmental Concern & Public Support For Environmental Policy, Aaron Scott Routhe

Masters Theses

There is increasing public debate over how to meet future water supply needs in historically humid, water-abundant areas such as the southeast United States. Citizens and policymakers struggle to reach accord on the appropriate environmental policy proposals for meeting those needs and the political strategies for implementing them. This study examines the social-psychological factors affecting environmental policy by developing a heuristic framework that integrates the recent conceptualization of environmental concern by Dunlap and Jones (2002) with the attitude-behavioral theories of Ajzen (1985) and Fishbein (Ajzen and Fishbein, 1980). Specifically, it tries to understand and predict expressions of public support (i.e. …

Examining Values Through Aphorisms, Lauriann L. Hebb Aug 2003

Examining Values Through Aphorisms, Lauriann L. Hebb

Masters Theses

Many psychologists agree that studying values is an important aspect of understanding human nature (Allport, Rokeach, etc.). In spite of this consensus, there is little collective research on the subject. This is due, in part, to variations in instruments.
Therefore, the purpose of the present research was to (a) assess the underlying structure of responses to a set of aphorisms, (b) to examine potential reasons for differential endorsement and (c) to explore the relationship between a set of aphorisms and traditional psychosocial measure of values as well as personality.
Study 1 included 928 participants, and the objective was to examine …

A Radiographic Study Of Third Molar Agenesis In A Sample From The American Midsouth, Alexandra Y. Hentisz Aug 2003

A Radiographic Study Of Third Molar Agenesis In A Sample From The American Midsouth, Alexandra Y. Hentisz

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of third molar agenesis in a sample from the American Midsouth. The sample included 118 black males, 115 black females, 100 white males and 100 white females. Panoramic radiographs of the dentition for each individual were studied to ascertain whether any of the third molars was congenitally absent. The results were submitted to statistical analysis.

The results showed that white males have a significantly higher propensity to be congenitally missing a third molar than black males, with p<0.001. Likewise, whites are more likely to be missing a third molar in the mandible than blacks, with p=0.007 in males and 0.041 in females. There was no significant difference between the sexes for each ancestry, nor was there a significant difference between sides.

The lower frequency of third molar agenesis in blacks (5.6%) compared to …

Masters Theses

The Fains Island site (40JE1) is a Late Mississippian, Dallas Phase site located in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Fains Island was excavated as a Works Progress Administration project in 1934. A total of 300, mostly mound based, burial features were recovered from the site. The purpose of this study is to present bioarchaeological data from Fains Island. Analysis was conducted for the total skeletal sample (N=338) in order to assess morbidity and mortality. Analytical techniques included aspects of paleodemography (through the use of a hazard model), and paleopathology (i.e., porotic hyperostosis, dental hypoplasia, periostitis, dental caries, trauma, and other descriptive pathological …

Implementing An Employee Survey That Is Linked To Business Strategy, Carol Gill Jul 2003

Implementing An Employee Survey That Is Linked To Business Strategy, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

A previous article published in this magazine concluded that whilst many organisations have adopted employee surveys as regular HRM practice it is only when surveys are linked to organisational strategy and implemented effectively that they can make a contribution. This article articulated two principles, firstly organisations should only ask what they want and need to know (relevant data) and they should be able and willing to act on what they find (actionable data). This article focuses on the implemenation of an employee survey that is consistent with these two principles.

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

This study examined diagnostic predictors of prospectively observed suicide attempts in a personality disorder (PD) sample. During 2 years of follow-up, 58 participants (9%) reported at least 1 definitive suicide attempt. Predictors that were examined include 4 PD diagnoses and selected Axis I diagnoses (baseline and course). Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that baseline borderline personality disorder (BPD) and drug use disorders significantly predicted prospective suicide attempts. Controlling for baseline BPD diagnosis, proportional hazards analyses showed that worsening in the course of major depressive disorder (MDD) and of substance use disorders in the month preceding the attempt were also significant …

From Theory To Practice: Developing And Implementing An Asset-Building Program For Milwaukee Public Housing Residents, Stephanie Montgomery

Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research

Beginning in August 2002, I had the opportunity to complete my Professional Practice in Community Development at the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM), a mid-sized public housing authority, which provides affordable housing to low-income individuals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, through public housing, rent assistance and homeownership programs. In recent years HACM has shifted its focus away from bricks and mortar (constructing and managing low income housing) towards a more comprehensive strategy, designed to not only provide low income families and individuals with affordable housing, but also assist to residents in achieving long-term economic self-sufficiency and in escaping poverty. …

Carbon Trading In Europe Is On The (Near) Horizon, Gary D. Lynne Jul 2003

Carbon Trading In Europe Is On The (Near) Horizon, Gary D. Lynne

Cornhusker Economics

The European Parliament just recently committed the 15-European Union countries to forming a greenhouse gas market trading in carbon equivalents starting January 1, 2005, consistent with each country also ratifying the Kyoto Protocol. Other European countries will also likely be included, for a total of twenty-seven countries. Trading will be among as many as 10,000 to 12,000 industrial and public firms (e.g., electric utilities burning coal) that account for almost one-half the emissions of greenhouse gases in Europe. The precursor to trading will be the setting of emissions caps on 1) each country; 2) on each industry within each country, …
