Guidelines For Finding Nests Of Passerine Birds In Tallgrass Prairie, Maiken Winter, Shawn E. Hawks, Jill A. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The productivity of birds is one of the most critical components of their natural history affected by habitat quality. Birds might occur at high densities in a given habitat patch but have low nesting success. Such "population sinks" would not be detected if observers relied solely on estimates of bird density. Therefore, it is essential to monitor nests and determine their outcomes. Although interest in grassland-nesting passerines has increased greatly during the last decade, we still know little about factors affecting their nesting success. To stimulate more research in this area, we summarize several methods for nest-searching and provide suggestions …

The United States In El Salvador: 1979-1992 Success Through The Eyes Of The Diplomats, David Jeffrey Mouritsen Jul 2003

The United States In El Salvador: 1979-1992 Success Through The Eyes Of The Diplomats, David Jeffrey Mouritsen

Theses and Dissertations

The United States made El Salvador one of its top priorities in the 1980s as the communist threat from the Soviet Union made its way to El Salvador. The Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), was supported by the Soviet Union via Cuba and became the target of the hard line politicians that ruled in El Salvador.

In order to combat the guerrilla movement, the United States structured its policy around national security to justify intervention in El Salvador. The three main points of the policy were to prevent a left-wing takeover by the communist-backed FMLN, …

Randall Simon's Sausage Assault, Mascots, And The All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Randall Simon is a very lucky man. When he took his bat to the nearest sausage it was blind luck that it was not the Bratwurst that was within his strike zone along the railing of the Pirates dugout. Those of us who have called Wisconsin home at one point in our lives know that, although Italian sausage may be savored by many, it is only the Brat that has sacred iconic status in the home state of the late Senator Joseph McCarthy. There are many other places that claim to hold a Bratwurst Festival but the annual event in …

A Visual Framework Invites Human Into The Clustering Process, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Jul 2003

A Visual Framework Invites Human Into The Clustering Process, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Clustering is a technique commonly used in scientific research. The task of clustering inevitably involves human participation - the clustering is not finished when the computer/algorithm finishes but the user has evaluated, understood and accepted the patterns. This defines a human involved "clustering-analysis/evaluation" iteration. Instead of neglecting this human involvement, we provide a visual framework (VISTA) with all power of algorithmic approaches (since their result can be visualized), and in addition we allow the user to steer/monitor/refine the clustering process with domain knowledge. The visual-rendering result also provides a precise pattern for fast post-processing.

On the front page of the Orlando Sentinel was the picture of the Orlando Magic Mr. Nice Guy and all around great guy, Darrell Armstrong. The model of the community had been arrested at 2:30 a.m. outside an Orlando nightspot for battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Eliminating Fallow: What Is The Best Transition Crop Back To Winter Wheat?, Paul Burgener

Cornhusker Economics

Dryland crop production has been a key component in the economy of the Central Great Plains for over 100 years. Although the river valleys and some underground water sources have provided small areas of irrigation, dryland crop production is dominant. With additional demands on the limited water resource in this region, dryland crop production is expected to increase in importance in the future.

Child Maltreatment And Resilience, Annette M. Strum

Theses and Graduate Projects

This exploratory, cross-sectional quantitative study was undertaken to examine how County Child Protection Social Workers perceive the concept of child resilience and how social worker self appraisal of use of resilience in interventions was consistent with their rating of resilience of children in their professional career. A self report survey was distributed to County Child Protection Field Social Workers. Univariate analysis was done and descriptive statistics were used to summarize characteristics of the data. Due to low response rate and design of the survey, findings could not be generalized. Future research may use this information to further explore "best practices" …

Wage Inequality And Skill Asymmetries, Peter Skott, Paul Auerbach Jul 2003

Wage Inequality And Skill Asymmetries, Peter Skott, Paul Auerbach

Peter Skott

Using a simple model with two levels of skill, we assume that high skill workers who fail to get high skill jobs may accept low skill positions; low skill workers do not have the analogous option of filling high skill position. This asymmetry implies that an adverse, skill neutral shock to aggregate employment may cause an increase in wage inequality, both between and within skill categories, as well as an increase in unemployment, especially among low skill workers. Movements in productivity, unemployment and inequality may thus be linked to induced overeducation and credentialism.
