A Workplace Study Of Three Children’S Mental Health Centres In Southern Ontario, Carol Stalker, Deena Mandell, Karen Frensch, C. Harvey Jun 2003

A Workplace Study Of Three Children’S Mental Health Centres In Southern Ontario, Carol Stalker, Deena Mandell, Karen Frensch, C. Harvey

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Rationale Recent cuts to resources for children and families requiring children’s mental health services coupled with an increase in the number of children needing these services have left staff in many agencies feeling extremely challenged in providing positive service environments for children and families. In this context, agencies are faced with the challenge of providing working environments that attract and retain staff, particularly in children’s residential mental health services. The purpose of this study was to explore sources of job satisfaction and stress, and why employees stay with and leave these organizations, in an effort to understand what contributes to …

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Purpose
Our purpose in interviewing parents with a child placed in residential mental health treatment was threefold: (1) to understand the functioning of children requiring residential mental health treatment before, during, and after treatment; (2) to characterize parents’ perceptions of their families’ involvement with residential treatment; and, (3) to address the popular notion that children requiring residential treatment come from highly dysfunctional and potentially harmful families by describing prevalent family functioning patterns.

Methodology
|This report is based on information obtained by interviewing 29 primary caregivers who had a child placed in residential care at one of two Ontario children’s mental …

The Negative Effects Of Media Advertisements On Men's Body Satisfaction, Lisa Lorenzen Jun 2003

The Negative Effects Of Media Advertisements On Men's Body Satisfaction, Lisa Lorenzen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined the effect of exposure to muscular ideal bodies on body satisfaction in men to see if the effects are similar to what women experience when they are exposed to thin bodies. Participants were 104 college men attending Western Kentucky University. Age of the participants ranged from 18 to 32 years, with a mean of 20.15 years (SD = 2.64). All participants were assessed on the Body Assessment (BA), which measures degree of satisfaction with 25 various aspects of the body. Participants were assessed on this measure before and after exposure to either muscular or non-muscular advertisements. Responses …

The Harmonic Fisher Equation And The Inflationary Bias Of Real Uncertainty, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos Jun 2003

The Harmonic Fisher Equation And The Inflationary Bias Of Real Uncertainty, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The classical Fisher equation asserts that in a nonstochastic economy, the inflation rate must equal the difference between the nominal and real interest rates. We extend this equation to a representative agent economy with real uncertainty in which the central bank sets the nominal rate of interest. The Fisher equation still holds, but with the rate of inflation replaced by the harmonic mean of the growth rate of money. Except for logarithmic utility, we show that on almost every path the long-run rate of inflation is strictly higher than it would be in the nonstochastic world obtained by replacing output …

The Inflationary Bias Of Real Uncertainty And The Harmonic Fisher Equation, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Arrow’s original proof of his impossibility theorem proceeded in two steps: showing the existence of a decisive voter, and then showing that a decisive voter is a dictator. Barbera replaced the decisive voter with the weaker notion of a pivotal voter, thereby shortening the first step, but complicating the second step. I give three brief proofs, all of which turn on replacing the decisive/pivotal voter with an extremely pivotal voter (a voter who by unilaterally changing his vote can move some alternative from the bottom of the social ranking to the top), thereby simplifying both steps in Arrow’s proof. My …

The Computation Of Counterfactual Equilibria In Homothetic Walrasian Economies, Donald J. Brown, Ravi Kannan Jun 2003

The Computation Of Counterfactual Equilibria In Homothetic Walrasian Economies, Donald J. Brown, Ravi Kannan

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We propose a nonparametric test for multiple calibration of numerical general equilibrium models, and we present an effective algorithm for computing counterfactual equilibria in homothetic Walrasian economies, where counterfactual equilibria are solutions to the Walrasian inequalities.

Real Determinacy With Nominal Assets, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos Jun 2003

Real Determinacy With Nominal Assets, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We build a finite horizon model with inside and outside money, in which interest rates, price levels and commodity allocations are determinate, even though asset markets are incomplete and asset deliveries are purely nominal.

Cross-Section Regression With Common Shocks, Donald W.K. Andrews Jun 2003

Cross-Section Regression With Common Shocks, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers regression models for cross-section data that exhibit cross-section dependence due to common shocks, such as macroeconomic shocks. The paper analyzes the properties of least squares (LS) and instrumental variables (IV) estimators in this context. The results of the paper allow for any form of cross-section dependence and heterogeneity across population units. The probability limits of the LS and IV estimators are determined and necessary and sufficient conditions are given for consistency. The asymptotic distributions of the estimators are found to be mixed normal after re-centering and scaling. t , Wald, and F statistics are found to have …

Schooling Costs And Child Work In Rural Pakistan, Gautam Hazarika, Arjun Bedi Jun 2003

Schooling Costs And Child Work In Rural Pakistan, Gautam Hazarika, Arjun Bedi

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

A conventional argument in the child–labour debate is that improvements in access to schools are an effective way to reduce the labour force participation of children. It is argued that schooling competes with economic activity in the use of children's time, and enhanced access to schools, interpretable as reduction in schooling costs, may raise school attendance at the expense of child labour. In this article, we draw a distinction between child labour within the household (intra-household) and child work in the labour market (extra-household), and examine the separate effects of schooling costs upon these two types of child labour in …

Effects Of Moral Sensitivity And Moral Climate On Moral Reasoning, Marita Louise Mahoney Jun 2003

Effects Of Moral Sensitivity And Moral Climate On Moral Reasoning, Marita Louise Mahoney

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

As healthcare professionals, psychology students and psychologists are expected to behave ethically and morally. It is assumed that moral and ethical reasoning in psychology students develops through exposure to ethical dilemmas within ethics classes and during clinical training experiences. Rest's Four Component Model of Moral Behavior, a neo-Kohlbergian approach to understanding moral development, posits an interaction of Moral Sensitivity, Moral Motivation, Moral Reasoning and Moral Character. Moral sensitivity, or awareness of a moral dilemma, is posited to cue the moral reasoning process, though little is known about how the training environment can facilitate or hamper such developments. Fifty".'two psychology-graduate students …

Fetal Attachment Among Pregnant Substance Users, Trisha Paulette Barcley Jun 2003

Fetal Attachment Among Pregnant Substance Users, Trisha Paulette Barcley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Identification of factors that may lead to child maltreatment is important for intervention at the earliest point in time. Substance use can adversely impact the developing bond between mother and child. The formation of an insecure attachment relationship may place the child at a greater risk for child abuse or neglect. If the mother-child bond can be assessed during pregnancy then intervention relating to attachment and prevention of child abuse may be possible. The relationships between childhood history of and the potential for child abuse, substance use, and fetal attachment were investigated utilizing a sample of 56 pregnant women from …

Barbarous Magnificence: The Decline And Continuity Of Akan Traditional Religious Practices, Kwasi Bempong Jun 2003

Barbarous Magnificence: The Decline And Continuity Of Akan Traditional Religious Practices, Kwasi Bempong

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses archaeological, anthropological, and historical evidence along with indigenous texts as the determining factors to address two major problems in the literature: the widely held belief that Akan culture developed in the forests of modem Ghana and that their supreme deity, Onyame, is a 'withdrawn deity', with whom they did not share an intimate relationship. Although these problems may seem unrelated the former is used to support the latter by ignoring the historical antecedents of Northern Akan culture that blossomed in the savanna-forest transition zone and the subsequent movement of well-developed religious practices and beliefs from the north …

War, Media And Public Opinion; Al-Jazeera's Role In The Recent Arab Israeli Conflicts", Marwa Ragaa Radwan Al-Mutafy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The second Palestinian intifada and the way it was covered by the various media outlets caused a revolution in media coverage in the Arab World. Al-Jazeera TV channel emerged and gathered audiences, and regularly tuned in to catch the latest news and updates, reminding people of CNN during the Gulf War. However, no studies were conducted, that measured the impact of this channel on audiences and how it did or did not create a common public opinion among them.

This study's purpose is to testing the relationship between Media,

War, and Public Opinion. In other words, it studies the impact …

Exploring The Physician’S Processes: Diagnosing Autism, Gwennyth Li Sze Palafox Jun 2003

Exploring The Physician’S Processes: Diagnosing Autism, Gwennyth Li Sze Palafox

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Physicians are customarily the first point of contact for parents who are concerned about a child’s development. Thus, it is important for physicians to be current and educated about childhood disorders and subsequent treatment for those disorders. Recently, empirical evidence has led to the proposal of early indicators of autism supporting that autism may be diagnosed accurately in children less than three years old. Furthermore, formal screening and assessment parameters developed by medical organizations have been proposed in order to identify autism as early as possible (American Academy of Neurology, 2000). While the proposed parameters and empirical evidence support early …

Responsibility For Past Injustice: How To Shift The Burden, Chandran Kukathas Jun 2003

Responsibility For Past Injustice: How To Shift The Burden, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article considers the question of the responsibility of present generations for injustices committed by previous ones. It asks whether the descendants of victims of past injustice have claims against the descendants of the perpetrators of injustice. Two modes of argument are examined: the individual responsibility approach, according to which descendants cannot have claims against other descendants, and the collective responsibility approach, according to which descendants do have strong claims. Both approaches are criticized, but for different failings. An alternative view, building on the individualist approach, is defended. This view argues that some people may have to bear responsibility for …

Making Sense Of Arson Through Classification, Rebekah Doley May 2003

Making Sense Of Arson Through Classification, Rebekah Doley

Rebekah Doley

Arson classification efforts are an attempt to make sense of a complex whole. To a greater or lesser extent typologies offered to date have relied on assumed motive. More recently, systems that combine information about offender characteristics and/or offence features have become increasingly popular. The ability to categorise arsonists accurately has significant implications for both mental health professionals and fire authorities. It is important to understand the limitations of arson classification systems generally to be able to apply them judiciously. This article discusses arson classification systems and examines three key approaches before providing an overview of some of the limitations …

Risk Evaluations For The Courts: Is Service Quality A Function Of Specialization?, Kristine Botsford Mullendore, Anton Tolman May 2003

Risk Evaluations For The Courts: Is Service Quality A Function Of Specialization?, Kristine Botsford Mullendore, Anton Tolman

Kristine Botsford Mullendore

Psychologists are often asked to testify in court. However, concerns have been expressed in both the legal and psychological literatures about the quality of these services. This article presents survey results comparing the practice patterns of generally licensed psychologists with those of specialist forensic diplomates in providing risk evaluations. Results suggest that general clinicians frequently perform these evaluations, but forensic diplomates use more modern risk instruments, are more aware of the scientific literature, and provide the court with more information about the scientific basis of their testimony. The implication of these results for legal professionals, psychologist training, and practice are …
