Oh That Wonderful Stuff": Selected Poetry By College And Middle School Students, Shawn Apostel

Shawn Apostel

When students use poetry to imagine and explore academic subjects, they examine the topic in new, creative ways, resulting in interesting and lively writings that stimulate thought and class discussions. The following poems are examples of student poetry written in a variety of classes throughout the curriculum. I am pleased to showcase student writing in this section, and I hope reading these poems will suggest possibilities and adaptations for teachers and students elsewhere.

The Importance Of Trust And Community In Developing And Maintaining A Community Electronic Network, Alina Oxendine, Eugene Borgida, John Sullivan, Melinda Jackson

Alina Oxendine

Focusing on two rural cities in Minnesota, this paper analyses ways in which these communities have gone about providing information technology to their citizens. This paper will explain why one city has chosen to take an entrepreneurial approach to networking and the other city has chosen a more collaborative approach, promoting equal access for its citizens. Based on interviews, focus groups, and surveys in the two cities, we find that these divergent approaches are related to fundamental cultural differences in the two communities. One city seems to have a more pronounced reservoir of social capital, meaning that people in this …

Shock Effects On Stocks, Bonds, And Exchange Rates, Ray C. Fair

Ray C Fair

Tick data and newswire searches are used to find events that led to large and rapid changes in a stock future, a bond future, and three exchange rate futures. Knowledge of these events may be useful in future work. They have the advantages that they are truly surprises and that the sign of their effect on each financial market is known. The events are used in this study to analyze the effects of three types of events (monetary, price, and real) on the five variables.

The Real Effects Of Money Growth In Dynamic General Equilibrium, Liam Graham, Dennis Snower May 2003

The Real Effects Of Money Growth In Dynamic General Equilibrium, Liam Graham, Dennis Snower

Dennis Snower

Dynamic New Keynesian models generally ignore steady state money growth. Within a standard New Keynesian framework, we show that the interaction between staggered nominal contracts and money growth leads to a long-run trade-off between output and money growth that is significant, and remains so when the contract length is endogenised. We show that the existence of the tradeoff depends crucially on a phenomenon we call employment cycling: firms’ substitution among different labor types over the course of the contract period. We discuss the plausibility of this phenomenon and show that when it is absent, money becomes super-neutral.

To See Oneself As A Target Of A Justified Revolution: Thomas Jefferson And Gabriel's Uprising, William G. Merkel May 2003

To See Oneself As A Target Of A Justified Revolution: Thomas Jefferson And Gabriel's Uprising, William G. Merkel

William G. Merkel

Examines Jefferson's response to Gabriel's Uprising and argues that Jefferson employed the language of criminal theory in urging Virginia Governor James Monroe to spare the lives of convicted conspirators for the sake of justice and the state's image before the enlightened world. Jefferson's analysis of the slave rebels' acts and intentions makes clear that - at least in abstract, philosophical terms - Jefferson saw the slave uprising as justified, while he viewed white Virginia's resort to deadly force to counter the revolt as at best excusable.

Institutional repositories are being constructed today to address the needs of scholarly communication in a digital environment. The success of such institutional infrastructures as knowledge collections depends in part on offering low barriers for participation and on supporting heterogeneous knowledge inputs and outputs. The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) in partnership with CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research), the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Science & Engineering Library, has modified CERN’s CDSware software to initiate the process of creating a local low barrier repository.
