Social Movements Theory : A Burkean Approach To The Rhetoric Of Abolition, Elena Maytee Cruz
Social Movements Theory : A Burkean Approach To The Rhetoric Of Abolition, Elena Maytee Cruz
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by Kenneth Burke's dramatism, this thesis examined the viability of social movements rhetorical theory in its application to literature by focusing on the 1 9th century abolitionist movement in the United States and moving from the analysis of public speeches to fictional works.
Chapter one applied the rhetorical analysis of social movements to noteworthy speeches by William Lloyd Garrison and Francis Maria W. Stewart. Chapter two examined social movements rhetoric in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Chapter three considered Uncle Tom's Cabin and determined whether social movements rhetorical theory could illuminate this persuasive work of …

Playing Miami : Afrocuban Performance Artists Negotiating Cubanidad, Kameelah Nicole Benjamin-Fuller
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The social scripts that are deeply involved in cultural production by AfroCuban identified artists in Miami, during the late nineties to the present, participate in a climate that is informed by and feeds from the so-called Latin Explosion of this time period. More specifically, varying historical, socioeconomic, and geopolitical trajectories have placed Africa and African-based religion and cultural production (via music and theatre) at the center of Cuban national identity. The purpose of this study is to facilitate a discussion of the experiences of AfroCuban performance artists and the climate for production, given the aforementioned dynamics, in mass media. These …

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Cornhusker Economics
Labeling meat and other perishable agricultural products was vigorously debated prior to the approval of the 2002 farm bill. The passage of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act in May, 2002 did create country of origin labeling (COOL); however, the controversy over COOL did not end there. In fact, it has intensified amongst producers, processors and retailers as they struggle to determine how to comply with COOL and exactly how it affects their operations.

Mentoring Youth: A Service-Learning Course Within A College Of Nursing, Janis C. Childs, Susan B. Sepples, Kimberly A. Moody
Higher Education
Faculty at the University of Southern Maine College of Nursing and Health Care Professions developed a service-learning course that connected students and faculty with at-risk children in a local community. Nursing students, with faculty supervision and support, developed, implemented, and evaluated interventions to reduce risk factors and increase protective factors to build and strengthen the participants' resiliency.
Students enrolled in the service-learning course worked in the community where they gained an understanding of what it was like for children and adolescents to live in an impoverished community setting with disorganized family units and weak community support. The students learned to …
Civic Engagement And American Democracy, Richard Erdmann
Civic Engagement And American Democracy, Richard Erdmann
Civic Engagement
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote of the United States during the 1830’s and his observations say much about democracy in general, democracy in the United States of the 1830’s and democracy today. His greatest fear for the United States was of apathy on the part of its citizens. He saw individualism and material wealth as potent contributors to the United States but also as potential distracters. He felt that the greatest threat existed because democracy might work so well that citizens would become apathetic. At this point the omnipotence of the majority would cause the democratic freedoms to slip away almost …
