School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This paper presents findings of a study comparing the advertising on the web sites supported by offline media and on the dot.com media that only have online presence. The study analyzes the advertising strategies of leading U.S. TV networks' web sites and online portals, which respectively represent web sites with strong offline media support and web sites with no offline media counterparts respectively. TV networks' advertising strategies were identified based on a spectrum of brand extension and brand integration strategies. Hot Jobs Or Not So Hot? Outlook For Maine's Women Workers, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine Apr 2003

Hot Jobs Or Not So Hot? Outlook For Maine's Women Workers, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine

Bureau of Labor Education

There are currently many upbeat analyses of the best and highest paying “hot new jobs” available to women workers in the first decade of the 21st century. Presumably, these career choices will offer such desirable things as good wages, decent benefits, creative and interesting work, and opportunities for advancement. However, while many individual women may benefit from such career advice, the sad fact is that the largest occupations available to women workers in Maine will continue to be pathways primarily to low wages, disappearing benefits, and dismal economic security. This briefing paper focuses on four basic questions concerning Maine’s women …

Library Buildings And The Building Of A Collaborative Research Collection At The Tri-College Library Consortium, J. Luther, L. Bills, Amy Mccoll, N. Medeiros, A. Morrison, E. Pumroy, Peggy Seiden

Library Staff Works

This report is the product of a planning grant awarded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2001 to the Tri-College Library Consortium, which comprises the libraries of Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. The grant proposal, entitled “Library Buildings and the Building of a Collaborative Research Collection at the Tri-Colleges,” set out a research agenda designed to address two central questions. The first question was a challenge: How could the three libraries come to terms with space problems caused by ever-growing collections and increasing demands to accommodate media, teaching, and student study areas in an environment in which library …

Industry-Wide Response To Terror: A Political Economy Analysis Of The Owner/Operator Sector Of The U.S. Motorcoach Industry Post 9-11, Kathryn J. Ready, Drew Stapleton, Milorad Novicevic, Tom Kuffel

Journal of Transportation Management

The authors develop a political economy framework to study the post- September 11th environmental changes and firm responses in the owner/operator sector of the U.S. motorcoach industry. Based on a comprehensive analysis of both evolutionary and revolutionary changes in the competitive and regulatory environments faced by the firms in this industry, their policy and strategic responses to the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001, on U.S. soil are examined. The industry’s response is captured (i.e., collective action response) by surveying 163 firms operating and competing in the owner/operator sector of the U.S. motorcoach industry. Several descriptive statistics are synthesized and …

Costly (Dis)Agreement: Optimal Intervention, Income Redistribution, And Transfer Efficiency Of Output Quotas In The Presence Of Cheating, Konstantinos Giannakas, Murray Fulton Apr 2003

Costly (Dis)Agreement: Optimal Intervention, Income Redistribution, And Transfer Efficiency Of Output Quotas In The Presence Of Cheating, Konstantinos Giannakas, Murray Fulton

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This study builds on previous work by Giannakas and Fulton (2003, 2000) on the economics of output quotas in the presence of cheating by examining the efficiency of the policy in transferring income to producers as well as the optimal regulatory response to enforcement costs and farmer noncompliant behavior in a decentralized policy making environment. Analytical results show that enforcement costs and cheating change the transfer efficiency of output quotas, the level of intervention that transfers a given surplus to producers, the socially optimal income redistribution, and the social welfare from intervention. The incidence of the policy is shown to …

Strategic Labeling And Trade Of Gmos, Luc Veyssiere, Konstantinos Giannakas Apr 2003

Strategic Labeling And Trade Of Gmos, Luc Veyssiere, Konstantinos Giannakas

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

The emergence of agricultural biotechnology and the subsequent introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the food system have been among the most controversial issues surrounding the increasingly scrutinized agri-food system. They have received considerable attention in the economics literature with the main focus being on the optimal regulatory response to products of biotechnology. This paper builds on the literature on the regulation of products of biotechnology by placing the analysis of labeling decisions in a multi-country context. Specifically, the objective of this study is to examine the effect of the strategic interdependence between countries on their regulatory responses to …

A First Look At The Nagin Administration, Susan E. Howell Apr 2003

A First Look At The Nagin Administration, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

Nagin enjoys a very high approval level one year into his term. Approval of Nagin is somewhat racially polarized with whites intensely positive, and blacks positive, but less intensely. For example, 60% of whites ΓÇ£stronglyΓÇ¥ approve of Nagin, and 37% of blacks feel the same. There is very little disapproval of Nagin. Disapproval is also slightly affected by race, with more blacks disapproving than whites. However, we should emphasize that a large majority of blacks (73%) approve of NaginΓÇÖs performance as mayor.
