The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon Apr 2003

The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon

Aquaculture Collection

Boldness and shyness were investigated as ‘personality’ traits in hatchery-reared rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Bold fish spent more time in an open area and were more active than shy fish and these behaviours could be used as indicators of boldness and shyness. These differences were related to learning ability in a simple conditioning task. Bold fish learned the task more quickly than shy fish.

Licensing Issues In The Acquisition Of Slides, Digital Images, And Digital Reproduction Rights For Two Digital Image Projects At Western Michigan University, Miranda Howard Apr 2003

Licensing Issues In The Acquisition Of Slides, Digital Images, And Digital Reproduction Rights For Two Digital Image Projects At Western Michigan University, Miranda Howard

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

" Advances taking place in digital imaging technology and projection are changing the way that libraries acquire images for classroom and research use. In the teaching of the visual arts and other subjects where material culture is at the heart of the discipline, pictures of objects are used as surrogates for actual artifacts, since pictorial surrogates allow instructors to talk about a work without having the actual piece present. One of the major changes in image acquisition brought about by new technology is that image vendors and the educational community are now much more attuned to the regulations of copyright …

Review Of Comanche Society; Before The Reservation By Gerald Betty, Daniel J. Gelo Apr 2003

Review Of Comanche Society; Before The Reservation By Gerald Betty, Daniel J. Gelo

Great Plains Quarterly

While the merging of historical and anthropological outlooks has been a productive trend in Plains Indian studies, there are pitfalls. For one, the authority inherent in an accurate chronology or lively narrative can mask basic errors in social analysis. Sometimes historians have difficulty in properly employing the terms and principles of social organization so carefully wrought in the neighbor discipline. Readers get an epic infused with mistaken ethnology, resulting in a setback rather than advance in understanding.

So it is with Gerald Betty's Comanche Society. The work attempts to recast the history of Comanche expansion via chapters on kinship, …

Journal of Transportation Management

The research reported in this manuscript provides insights regarding trucking related e-marketplaces and web-based offerings by truckers. Over 2,000 shippers were surveyed with 420 total responses. Overall, only 7% of shippers were currently utilizing e-marketplaces; however, those that are appear to be satisfied. Shippers ranked tracking, freight posting, and pricing, in that order of importance for trucking web sites.

Logistics Education At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Abdussalam A. Addus, Anwar S. Kahn, David Chen Apr 2003

Logistics Education At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Abdussalam A. Addus, Anwar S. Kahn, David Chen

Journal of Transportation Management

A review of research literature on logistics education reveals disparities between demand for and supply of logistics management skills. Racial minorities are relatively underrepresented in logistics education and professional careers. In order to meet the rising demand for college graduates and mitigate racial disparities in the field, a need arises to enhance logistics education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). HBCU’s are known to have a high rate of success in retaining and graduating African American students. Yet, only a few of these institutions offer logistics degree programs or concentrations within the business and social science majors. This article …

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna Apr 2003

The Development Of A Physical Education Teachers' Physical Activity Self-Efficacy Instrument, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the present investigation a questionnaire was developed to assess physical education teachers' self-efficacy for teaching classes in which their students were engaged in high levels of physical activity (i.e., at least 50% of class time). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in the development of a 16-item, 4-factor, multidimensional physical education teachers' physical activity self-efficacy scale (PETPAS) that produced reliable and valid scores. The Student factor reflected teachers' efficacy for managing students who didn't enjoy or value physical activity. The Time factor was indicative of teachers' efficacy when they didn't have enough time to teach. The Space factor reflected …

Party Positions Or Party Direction?, Riccardo Pelizzo Apr 2003

Party Positions Or Party Direction?, Riccardo Pelizzo

riccardo pelizzo

The use .f the party manifesto data (PMD) to identqy parties’ position in the political space provida a rather distorted picture of the Italian party syJlern. Three possible explanations fbr this are explored, namely that the Italian party system is exceptional, that there are jlaws in [he data and there might be flaws in the methodology. The article argues that none of these explanations is jully satisJuctory and advances the hypothesis that the PMD left-right scores do not indicate parties’ posilions but instead indicate parties’ direction, that is how (and how much) parlies move to adjusl to changing political conditions …

Equilibrium Dynamics In The One-Sector Endogenous Growth Model With Physical And Human Capital, Manuel A. Gómez Apr 2003

Equilibrium Dynamics In The One-Sector Endogenous Growth Model With Physical And Human Capital, Manuel A. Gómez

Manuel A. Gómez

This paper concerns the transitional dynamics of the one sector endogenous growth model with physical and human capital when gross investments are irreversible. It has been claimed that the transition path is on the stable saddle path of the system that describes the dynamics of the economy as long as the constraint on nonnegative gross investment in one of the factors is binding. We show that this does not have to be the case. The dynamics can be determined by noting that the continuity of the shadow prices involves the continuity of the consumption path.

Effects Of Flat-Rate Taxes: To What Extent Does The Leisure Specification Matter?, Manuel A. Gómez Apr 2003

Effects Of Flat-Rate Taxes: To What Extent Does The Leisure Specification Matter?, Manuel A. Gómez

Manuel A. Gómez

This paper explores the implications that the specification of the leisure activity has on the effects of alternative forms of taxation in a two-sector endogenous growth model of the U.S. economy. Growth and welfare effects of tax reforms are shown to depend markedly on the leisure specification. We also compute the optimal tax structure of factor incomes and consumption taxation. The optimal tax rate on capital income is rather robust to the leisure specification. However, the balance between consumption and labor income taxation and the effects of shifting to the optimal tax structure vary considerably across leisure specifications.

The Color Of Crime: The Case Against Race-Based Suspect Descriptions, Bela August Walker Apr 2003

The Color Of Crime: The Case Against Race-Based Suspect Descriptions, Bela August Walker

Bela August Walker

Law enforcement in the United States relies on racial identifiers as a crucial part of suspect descriptions. Unlike racial profiling, this practice is regarded as both an essential tool for law enforcement and as an unproblematic use of race. However, given the racial history of the United States, such descriptors, particularly “Black,” have developed in such a way to create an extremely large and unreliable category. Due to these factors, the use of race as a physical descriptor in suspect decisions is both discriminatory and inefficient. Employing race as an identifying characteristic allows law enforcement officers broad discretionary powers that …

Law Enforcement Cooperation As A 'Transnational Factor' In Cross-Taiwan Strait Relations, Jason A. Blatt Apr 2003

Law Enforcement Cooperation As A 'Transnational Factor' In Cross-Taiwan Strait Relations, Jason A. Blatt

Jason A Blatt

In recent years, political disputes have constantly prevented governments in China and Taiwan from working with each other on important issues of mutual concern. However, cooperation between law enforcement authorities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait has steadily increased over the past decade and a half, regardless of ups and downs in political relations. While governments on both sides are still not speaking to each other, law enforcement authorities are boosting cooperation by sharing information on criminal cases, deporting each other's fugitives, exchanging visits of high-ranking police officials and participating in seminars on cross-strait crime-fighting. Successful cross-strait law enforcement …

Klipsun Magazine, 2003, Volume 33, Issue 04 - April, Karla Tillman

Klipsun Magazine

Last summer I spent 20 hours per week working as a public relations intern at the Whatcom Museum of History & Art. Although I wore a nametag that said “VOLUNTEER,” I was not doing the work entirely for free — I was receiving university credit. When my supervisor asked me to write a feature story for the member newsletter about museum volunteers, I was surprised to discover that hundreds of people contribute their time and energy (for free) to this downtown landmark. As they contribute to the museum, they are ultimately improving the Bellingham community.

Although Klipsun doesn’t normally have …
