Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities: A Cursory Review, New England Environmental Finance Center

Smart Growth

It is well-known and generally accepted that all undeveloped land in New England cannot forever be protected from development; nor would this be a desirable goal, as continued economic development and population growth are near certainties. For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

Cybermethods: An Assessment, H. Megens, Brian Martin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Methods of communication and action on the Internet, such as e-mail, encryption and hacking, can be broadly grouped into four categories: expressing, protecting, information gathering and interfering. This classification helps explain the distribution of concern about cybermethods and offers a guide for assessing and designing future methods. As forms of technology, cybermethods are neither neutral nor autonomous. Methods of expressing and protecting are most suitable for promoting a society with greater equality and participation.

Women And Inheritance Laws: The Case Of Egypt, Hedayat Labib

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Economic dependence on men results in powerlessness and passivity on the part of women. Men utilize cultural capital in their attempt to justify their unjust disinheritance of their female kin. This is used to mystify and justify to themselves their material possession of the shares of women. Whether they accept this situation or not, women are socialized into perceiving men in a certain …

Catalytic Finance: When Does It Work?, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin Feb 2003

Catalytic Finance: When Does It Work?, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In a simple model of currency crises caused by creditor coordination failure, we show that bailouts that reduce ex post inefficiency will sometimes create ex ante moral hazard but will sometimes enhance the incentives for governments to take preventative actions. This model helps us understand a debate about the role of the IMF in catalyzing lending to developing countries.
