Constructionisme Social Et Nouvelles Parentalités, Kenneth J. Gergen
Constructionisme Social Et Nouvelles Parentalités, Kenneth J. Gergen
Psychology Faculty Works
My concern in this paper is with the breakdown in the traditional family structure, and the simultaneous emergence of new patterns of parenthood. Increasingly we find instances of “blended families,” gay and lesbian families, daycare dependent families, grandparent-centered families, “collaborative families,” and more. While family therapists may attempt to restore traditional “family values,” the greater challenge is helping the new family patterns to flourish. In this paper I propose that social constructionist theory provides a useful resource for new ideas and practices relevant to the new parentalities. Social constructionism centers on the way in which our ideas of the real …

The Strong Law Of Demand, Donald J. Brown, Caterina Calsamiglia
The Strong Law Of Demand, Donald J. Brown, Caterina Calsamiglia
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We show that a demand function is derived from maximizing a quasilinear utility function subject to a budget constraint if and only if the demand function is cyclically monotone. On finite data sets consisting of pairs of market prices and consumption vectors, this result is equivalent to a solution of the Afriat inequalities where all the marginal utilities of income are equal. We explore the implications of these results for maximization of a random quasilinear utility function subject to a budget constraint and for representative agent general equilibrium models. The duality theory for cyclically monotone demand is developed using the …

Understanding Policy Change In Developing Countries: The Spheres Of Influence Framework, Paul F. Steinberg
Understanding Policy Change In Developing Countries: The Spheres Of Influence Framework, Paul F. Steinberg
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
National policy reform is a prerequisite for improved stewardship of the global environment and figures prominently among the goals of international environmental diplomacy and transnational advocacy campaigns. Yet research on global environmental politics has proceeded absent models of policy change in developing countries, where most of the planet's people, land, and biological diversity are found. In this article I present a theoretical framework to explain the domestic responses of developing countries to global environmental concerns. Drawing on research in Costa Rica and Bolivia, I situate the impact of global environmentalism in the context of complex, decades-long domestic struggles to create …
Genetic Variation In The Midcontinental Population Of Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis, Jessica L. Petersen, Richard Bischof, Gary L. Krapu, Allen L. Szalanski
Genetic Variation In The Midcontinental Population Of Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis, Jessica L. Petersen, Richard Bischof, Gary L. Krapu, Allen L. Szalanski
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Three subspecies of sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) are recognized in the Midcontinental population, the lesser (Grus c. canadensis), Canadian (G. c. rowani), and greater (G. c. tabida). Blood samples collected on the population’s primary spring staging area in Nebraska, U.S.A., were used to resolve the genetic relationship among these subspecies. Phylogenetic analysis of 27 G. canadensis, by DNA sequencing of a 675 bp region of the mtDNA, supports the subspecies designations of G. c. canadensis and G. c. tabida. G. c. rowani individuals were intermediate with each of the other …
Extension Educators’ Supply Of Risk Management Training To Farmers, Oscar Vergara, Steve Martin, Keith H. Coble, George F. Patrick, Thomas O. Knight, Alan E. Baquet
Extension Educators’ Supply Of Risk Management Training To Farmers, Oscar Vergara, Steve Martin, Keith H. Coble, George F. Patrick, Thomas O. Knight, Alan E. Baquet
Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
This paper primary objective is to analyze the supply of risk management education provided by extension educators to their clients. A survey of county/area extension educators from Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, and Nebraska was conducted during the fall of 2001. A Tobit econometric model was constructed to analyze the extension educators’ supply of risk management training to farmers. Results showed that the number of risk management education training programs held in the past 3 years by extension educators was positively related to the extension educators’ percent of time devoted to agricultural responsibilities, the value of all crops in the extension educator’s …

Serum Dioxin And Psychological Functioning In U.S. Air Force Veterans Of The Vietnam War, Joel E. Michalek
Serum Dioxin And Psychological Functioning In U.S. Air Force Veterans Of The Vietnam War, Joel E. Michalek
Psychology Faculty Publications
Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, we assessed the psychological functioning of U.S. Air Force veterans exposed to Agent Orange and its contaminant, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlodibenzo-p-dioxin (dioxin), during the Vietnam War. Index subjects were veterans of Operation Ranch Hand (N = 1,109). Comparisons (N = 1,493) were U.S. Air Force veterans not involved with spraying herbicides. We found few consistent psychological abnormalities associated with serum dioxin levels. Ranch Hand veterans with higher dioxin levels showed some difficulties in anxiety, somatization, depression, and a denial of psychological factors. However, those with background levels also showed indications of …
