Participation In Electoral Politics, Byron D. Orey, Reginald Vance Jan 2003

Participation In Electoral Politics, Byron D. Orey, Reginald Vance

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

This chapter traces the evolution of African American electoral participation and characterizes the political behavior that it has generated for this racialized community. First, the chapter examines this community's behavior relative to the various political parties, the standard vehicles through which electoral participation is executed. It then examines the voting behavior of African Americans. This is followed by case studies examining Black third-party efforts, political behavior during Reconstruction, and Jesse Jackson's bid for the presidency.

The New Black Conservative: Rhetoric Or Reality?, Byron D. Orey

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

In recent years there has been growing speculation regarding an increase in the number of African Americans identifying themselves as conservatives. Much of this speculation has been heightened by the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives. This list includes icons like Clarence Thomas, J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes and Ward Connerly, to name a few. Despite the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives, there has been a dearth of systematic analyses to determine if this phenomenon has trickled down to the masses.

Models that have traditionally been …

Investment Feasibility, Cash Flows And Financial Impacts, Glenn A. Helmers Jan 2003

Investment Feasibility, Cash Flows And Financial Impacts, Glenn A. Helmers

Cornhusker Economics

Investments in depreciable assets typically involve major capital outlays requiring carefully budgeted decisions. This process involves two parts -- the basic economic decision, as well as the cash flow and financial outcomes which occur over the life of the asset. The basic decision requires an annual cost to be estimated which can be compared to an expected annual return. In some cases (for example, the replacement of one item of a machinery complement), no identifiable return can be matched against the cost. Even in this case it is important to estimate the ownership cost of the asset in comparing it …

On Sport and Society

Cub fans are a unique species. Attachment to losing is taken to a level of religious fanaticism by the Cub faithful. Of course the charm of the Cubs is not simply that they lose, but that they are lovable losers. This is what inspires undying devotion in their fans. Indeed if the Cubs were to do the improbable, nay the impossible, and win a World Series, Cub fans would risk losing the essence of their Cubness.

Philip Morris Faces "The Truth": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Persuasiveness Of Two Teen-Targeted Anti-Smoking Advertising Campaigns, Marybeth Mcmurray Jan 2003

Philip Morris Faces "The Truth": A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Persuasiveness Of Two Teen-Targeted Anti-Smoking Advertising Campaigns, Marybeth Mcmurray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the persuasiveness of anti-smoking television advertisements aimed at teens and produced by Philip Morris's Youth Smoking Prevention Program and the American Legacy Foundation's truth campaign. The advertisements are analyzed rhetorically using Kenneth Burke's dramatistic approach, supplemented by theory related to persuasive advertising, characteristics of at-risk adolescents, persuasive attack, and persuasive defense (apologia).

The analysis indicates that strong central themes present in both the Philip Morris and truth campaigns act as a means of rhetorical persuasion, but are not necessarily rhetoric designed to persuade adolescents not to smoke cigarettes. The truth campaign advertisements contain both strengths and weaknesses. …

An Activity-Based Model Of Collective Knowledge, Helen M. Hasan Jan 2003

An Activity-Based Model Of Collective Knowledge, Helen M. Hasan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In the challenges faced by organisations in the area of knowledge management, there is clearly a role for information and communications technologies in supporting the exploitation of business knowledge. This paper proposes a model of knowledge processes, based on the concept of "activity", i.e. what people do, as determined by the cultural-historical activity theory. The evolutionary development of an implementation of the model in currently available technology is described, together with the results of an evaluation of its suitability and effectiveness. This work is substantiating both the practicability of the implementation and the usefulness of the structure for the extraction …
