Irrational Markets, Irrational Investors: The Foreign Card, John Sondey, Tony Jacobson Jan 2003

Irrational Markets, Irrational Investors: The Foreign Card, John Sondey, Tony Jacobson

Economics Staff Paper Series

The full arrival of the information age, transported through the medium of the internet, provides the individual investor with quicker access to more information than ever before. Economic theory tells us that greater transparency in investment decisions should make for more efficient financial markets; i.e. smaller deviations of security prices from their "true" or intrinsic values. However, recent evidence based in US stock market performance suggests that the vastly improved information flow may cause investors to act in a less rational manner, leading to greater market volatility and less efficient financial markets. The argument that information technology (IT) provides the …

Kyoto Is Nearing Ratification: Carbon Storage Opportunity?, Gary D. Lynne

Cornhusker Economics

According to a recent Washington Post article, Senators McCain (R-Arizona) and Lieberman (D-Connecticut) plan to hold a hearing early on in the new Senate proceedings about proposed legislation that would be introduced later this year to establish a “cap-and-trade” system for greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Several other countries are already involved in developing cap-and-trade systems, generally trading in carbon equivalents. Somewhat ironically, in that the current Bush Administration has opposed any kind of mandatory caps (although it has encouraged voluntary trading), the model for such a system is the U.S. sulfur emissions allowances market that was initiated …

Political E-Mail: Protected Speech Or Unwelcome Spam?, Mark Sweet Jan 2003

Political E-Mail: Protected Speech Or Unwelcome Spam?, Mark Sweet

Duke Law & Technology Review

Candidates for political office are using unsolicited bulk e-mails to reach the electorate. Commonly known as "political spam," this campaign tactic is an inexpensive supplement to television, radio, and print ads. Advocates claim that campaigning via the internet reduces candidates' dependence on fundraising, but critics detest political spam as the latest nuisance. This iBrief examines the legal basis for political spam, distinguishes political spam from analogous regulated speech, and argues that political spam serves an interest worth protecting.

Looking Forward, Looking Back, Looking Inward: Lessons From Vital Women Leaders In Old Age, Shelly Marks Valdez Edd Jan 2003

Looking Forward, Looking Back, Looking Inward: Lessons From Vital Women Leaders In Old Age, Shelly Marks Valdez Edd

Dissertations

Current social paradigms, based on established theory about the aged, consider old age as a time of drastic decline and deterioration and view the aged as nonproductive takers of society's resources. Far from using the wisdom and resources of the aged population, our society marginalizes old adults and treats them as obsolete. This study looks into the lives of nine women over the age of 65 who have found within themselves the strength, courage and determination to overcome the stereotypes of aging in order to become leaders in their old age. Life stories were obtained through personal interviews. Data from …
