Marriage On Tv, Mary E. Hess Jan 2003

Marriage On Tv, Mary E. Hess

Faculty Publications

While it is important for teachers of religion to consider how television portrays marriage, it may be even more important to consider how we use television and how we help people engage the media with critical perception. People of faith need to do a cultural intervention, providing a deep and sustaining vision of what marriage can be over time and in connection with community.

Captive Supplies And The Spot Market Price Of Fed Cattle: The Plant-Level Relationship, John R. Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam Jan 2003

Captive Supplies And The Spot Market Price Of Fed Cattle: The Plant-Level Relationship, John R. Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Numerous articles in the agricultural economics literature investigate the empirical relationship between the spot market price of fed cattle and the volume of packers’ precommitted, or “captive,” supplies of cattle. In this article, we use an extensive data set on the cattle procurement activities of four large packing plants in the Texas Panhandle from early 1995 through mid-1996 to examine this relationship at the plant-level. We find evidence to support the hypothesis that plants that anticipate near-term future deliveries of captive supply cattle that are high relative to their regional-market rivals’ degrees of reliance on captive supplies tend to pay …

Electoral Institutions, Ethnopolitical Cleavages, And Party Systems In Africa's Emerging Democracies, Shaheen Mozaffar, J. R. Scarritt, G. Galaich Jan 2003

Electoral Institutions, Ethnopolitical Cleavages, And Party Systems In Africa's Emerging Democracies, Shaheen Mozaffar, J. R. Scarritt, G. Galaich

Political Science Faculty Publications

Do electoral institutions and ethnopolitical cleavages shape the structure of party systems separately or jointly? We examine the independent, additive, and interactive effects on the number of electoral and legislative parties of two institutional variables (district magnitude and proximity of presidential and legislative elections), one intervening variable (effective number of presidential candidates), and two new measures of ethnopolitical cleavages based on constructivist specification of ethnopolitical groups (fragmentation and concentration). Ethnopolitical fragmentation independently reduces the number of parties but, interactively with ethnopolitical concentration, increases it. However, the additive and interactive combinations of both measures with electoral institutions explain the largest amount …

Counting On The Past Or Investing In The Future? Economic And Political Accountability In Fujimori’S Peru, Jana Morgan Jan 2003

Counting On The Past Or Investing In The Future? Economic And Political Accountability In Fujimori’S Peru, Jana Morgan

Political Science Publications and Other Works

This article strengthens and extends economic theories of presidential approval, assesses accountability in Peru’s “delegative democracy,” and explores the political feasibility of economic policies. The analysis finds that prospective evaluations shape presidential approval in Peru, demonstrating the utility of economic theories in the developing world. Peruvians hold politicians accountable not only for the economic past, but also for future implications of past actions, which suggests that vertical accountability exists and that this type of accountability encourages forward-looking policy choices. Finally, the analysis indicates that important political events, including the capture of the Sendero Luminoso guerrillas and Fujimori’s autogolpe, influence Peruvians’ …

Validating Internet Research: A Test Of The Psychometric Equivalence Of Internet And In-Person Samples, Paul Meyerson, Warren W. Tryon

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study evaluated the psychometric equivalency of Web-based research. The Sexual Boredom Scale was presented via the World-Wide Web along with five additional scales used to validate it. A subset of 533 participants that matched a previously published sample (Watt & Ewing, 1996) on age, gender, and race was identified. An 8 X 8 correlation matrix from the matched Internet sample was compared via structural equation modeling with a similar 8 X 8 correlation matrix from the previously published study. The Internet and previously published samples were psychometrically equivalent. Coefficient alpha values calculated on the matched Internet sample yielded reliability …

Fully Proportional Actigraphy: A New Instrument, Warren W. Tryon, Robert Williams Jan 2003

Fully Proportional Actigraphy: A New Instrument, Warren W. Tryon, Robert Williams

Psychology Faculty Publications

The relevance of activity measurement is reviewed. Technical information regarding a new, small, lightweight, fully proportional accelerometer-based activity monitor suited for a wide range of wrist, waist, and ankle activity measurements over extended time periods in free-ranging persons is presented. Calibration data demonstrating within- and between-device reliability and validity are presented. Field trial data are presented showing that wrist and waist actigraphs can predict kilocalories of energy expended. The issue of how activity monitors should be validated is discussed. Instrument reliability is distinguished from clinical repeatability. Recommendations are provided to assist investigators with instrument selection.

From Fleck’S Denkstil To Kuhn’S Paradigm: Conceptual Schemes And Incommensurability, Babette Babich Jan 2003

From Fleck’S Denkstil To Kuhn’S Paradigm: Conceptual Schemes And Incommensurability, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

This article argues that the limited influence of Ludwik Fleck’s ideas on philosophy of science is due not only to their indirect dissemination by way of Thomas Kuhn, but also to an incommensurability between the standard conceptual framework of history and philosophy of science and Fleck’s own more integratedly historico-social and praxis-oriented approach to understanding the evolution of scientific discovery. What Kuhn named “paradigm” offers a periphrastic rendering or oblique translation of Fleck’s Denkstil/Denkkollektiv, a derivation that may also account for the lability of the term “paradigm”. This was due not to Kuhn’s unwillingness to credit Fleck but rather to …

On The Analytic-Continental Divide In Philosophy: Nietzsche's Lying Truth, Heidegger's Speaking Language, And Philosophy, Babette Babich Jan 2003

On The Analytic-Continental Divide In Philosophy: Nietzsche's Lying Truth, Heidegger's Speaking Language, And Philosophy, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

This article explores the question of the nature of the differences between analytic and continental styles of philosophizing, raising the political stakes of the professional differentiation between, and especially: the denial of the difference between analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. Discusses the question of the annexation of the philosophical themes of continental philosophy on the part of analytic philosophy, annexation because it is not dialogical or hermeneutical, appropriation or cooption simply by refusing the distinction between styles altogether.

Wildlife Knowledge Among Migrants In Southern Sumatra, Indonesia: Implications For Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus, Sumianto Tilson, Ronald Tilson

Faculty Scholarship

The value of traditional ecological knowledge for biodiversity research and conservation is widely recognized. The value of wildlife knowledge provided by recent migrants is less clear. Photographs of 10 mammal species were shown to 622 individuals in communities near Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia, to assess wildlife knowledge among recent migrants and to identify socio-economic variables that can be used to identify more knowledgeable informants. Knowledge scores were categorized by taxonomic family, genus and species. Large, charismatic and abundant animals were identified more frequently than smaller and more secretive animals. Higher knowledge scores were significantly associated with males, …

Dangerous Animals In Captivity: Ex Situ Tiger Conflict And Implication For Private Ownership Of Exotic Animals, Philip J. Nyhus, Ronald L. Tilson, J L. Tomlinson

Faculty Scholarship

The risks associated with tiger attacks on people in the wild are well documented. There may currently be more tigers in captivity than in the wild, but relatively little is known about the risks of injury or death associated with owning and managing captive tigers and other large carnivores. The purpose of this study was to conduct a global assessment of attacks by captive tigers on people, with particular emphasis on cases in the United States. Our analysis of 30 international media sources and additional documents uncovered 59 unique incidents in 1998-2001 in which people were reportedly injured or killed …

Words That Kill? Economic Perspectives On Hate Speech And Hate Crimes, Dhammika Dharmapala, Richard H. Mcadams Jan 2003

Words That Kill? Economic Perspectives On Hate Speech And Hate Crimes, Dhammika Dharmapala, Richard H. Mcadams

Economics Working Papers

This paper analyzes the conditions under which the level of hate speech (expressing hostility towards racial and other minorities) in society can influence whether individuals commit hate crimes against minorities. More generally, we explore the conditions under which speech can influence behavior by revealing social attitudes. We propose a model in which potential offenders care not only about the intrinsic benefits from the crime and the expected costs of punishment, but also about the esteem conferred by like-minded individuals. The number of such individuals is uncertain, but can (in certain circumstances) be inferred from the level of hate speech. We …

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2003

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

Technology transfer enables private industry and academia to make practical use of advanced research, development, and technical expertise. Indeed, universities are a rich source of science and technology that can support local government and business development as well as economic growth. Thus, it is essential for research universities to transfer their wisdom to the public for its use and benefit. Today, universities operate in an economic climate that requires both capital and knowledge; takes advantage of government technology initiatives (namely the Bayh- Dole Act);' and serves as a catalyst for the creation of a large number of new, incubated companies. …

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2003

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

When there is an economic downturn, cities are forced to develop a strategy to revitalize. Increasing the transfer of high technology into the marketplace stimulates the economy. High tech industries are industries that include relatively high percentages of scientific and technical workers, or industries that make relatively large expenditures in research and development. "[I]n difficult economic times, political stakeholders in the technology transfer process usually view success in economic impact terms, and often from short-term and parochial perspectives-how many jobs in my state next year?" Examples include the expansion of the suburban space economy in the 1980s that produced new …

Cyclophosphamide Induces Dose- And Time-Dependent Elevations In Spleen Norepinephrine Levels Of Balb/C Mice, Jonathan Karp, Jennifer L. Szczytkowski-Thomson Jan 2003

Cyclophosphamide Induces Dose- And Time-Dependent Elevations In Spleen Norepinephrine Levels Of Balb/C Mice, Jonathan Karp, Jennifer L. Szczytkowski-Thomson

Psychology Educator Scholarship

Chemotherapeutic drugs may not only kill rapidly dividing cells but may also alter the extracellular environment of surviving cells. We investigated the possibility that cyclophosphamide might alter the noradrenergic environment of the spleen. Male BALB/cByJ mice were administered a single injection of cyclophosphamide (0, 15, 50, or 100 mg/kg). Seventy-two hours after injection animals receiving 50 or 100 but not 15 mg/kg experienced elevated norepinephrine concentrations (pmol/mg) compared to animals given 0 mg/kg. The time course of changes in norepinephrine concentration was investigated 24–216 h after administration of 50 mg/kg cyclophosphamide; norepinephrine took 48 h to elevate, remained elevated for …

Beyond The Reality Of Injury And Statistical Death: An Internship Experience In Forensic Economics, Henrietta Iranyi Jan 2003

Beyond The Reality Of Injury And Statistical Death: An Internship Experience In Forensic Economics, Henrietta Iranyi

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Day after day, people get terminated, injured, or even killed. In forensic economics, more specifically, in personal injury and wrongful death litigation, the injured party is often allowed to receive compensation for the economic losses suffered. It is the job of an economic expert to evaluate the damages in the different personal injury and wrongful death cases. The following report demonstrates three different situations when economic damage evaluation would be performed by an expert. Two of the cases evaluate lost earnings (including fringe benefits) and lost support to the injured person and/or the immediate surviving family members. The third case …
