Innovation Und Intellektuelles Eigentum: Wer Nutzt Und Wem Nützen Softwarepatente?, Michael Friedewald, Knut Blind, Jakob Edler Jan 2003

Innovation Und Intellektuelles Eigentum: Wer Nutzt Und Wem Nützen Softwarepatente?, Michael Friedewald, Knut Blind, Jakob Edler

Michael Friedewald

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald Jan 2003

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

The importance of information and communication technologies in everyday life is increasing strongly. The growing penetration of PCs in households and offices and the almost ubiquitous use of mobile communication devices are vivid examples for this development.

The key drivers influencing the penetration, usage patterns and specific energy consumption of IC-equipment were examined and a bottom-up analysis of the direct energy consumption of ICT-equipment in households and offices was made for 2001 resulting an energy demand of 38 TWh. In addition, projections for the years 2005 and 2010 were developed based on the base year consumption and the key driving …

Steamboats Of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Lecture Presented At The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, Atlantic Highlands, Nj, November, 2003., Megan E. Springate Jan 2003

Steamboats Of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Lecture Presented At The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, Atlantic Highlands, Nj, November, 2003., Megan E. Springate

Megan E. Springate

Steamboats provided a critical commercial link between Monmouth County, New Jersey and New York City from the early nineteenth through the third quarter of the twentieth centuries. Over 200 vessels have been documented as plying Monmouth County's waters, carrying farm goods to market and leisure patrons to the shore. This presentation summarizes the steamboat's history in Monmouth County, and provides several examples of vessels that ran in the area.

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2003

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

Competition, Risk And Managerial Incentives, Michael Raith Jan 2003

Competition, Risk And Managerial Incentives, Michael Raith

Michael Raith

This paper examines how the degree of competition among firms in an industry affects the optimal incentives that firms provide to their managers. A central assumption is that there is free entry and exit in the industry, which implies that changes in the nature of competition lead to changes in the equilibrium market structure. The main result is that as the intensity of product market competition increases (as a result of greater product substitutability or greater market size), principals unambiguously provide stronger incentives to their agents to reduce costs. At the same time, more intense competition also leads to more …

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams Jan 2003

Material Culture As Memory: Combs And Cremation In Early Medieval Britain, Howard M. R. Williams

Howard M. R. Williams

This paper argues that mortuary practices can be understood as ‘technologies of remembrance’. The frequent discovery of combs in early medieval cremation burials can be explained by their mnemonic significance in the post-cremation rite. Combs (and other objects used to maintain the body’s surface in life) served to articulate the reconstruction of the deceased’s personhood in death through strategies of remembering and forgetting. This interpretation suggests new perspectives on the elationships between death, material culture and social memory in early medieval Europe.

The Impact Of Concealed-Carry Laws, John J. Donohue Jan 2003

The Impact Of Concealed-Carry Laws, John J. Donohue

John Donohue

Thirty-three states have “shall-issue” laws that require law enforcement authorities to issue permits to carry concealed weapons to any qualified applicant who requests one—that is, to adults with no documented record of significant criminality or mental illness. A spirited academic debate has emerged over whether these laws are helpful or harmful. While it is fairly easy to list the possible consequences of the passage of these laws, it has not been easy to come to agreement about which effects dominate in practice. Many scholars fear that these laws will stimulate more ownership and carrying of guns, leading to adverse effects …

The Serious Leisure Frontier In Library And Informtion Science: Hobby Domains, Jenna Hartel Jan 2003

The Serious Leisure Frontier In Library And Informtion Science: Hobby Domains, Jenna Hartel

Jenna Hartel

Research on information behavior rarely focuses on leisure realms while favoring scholarly and professional contexts as subjects. Such is the case despite compelling evidence of the desirability and profundity of leisure in human life. This article introduces one popular form of leisure, hobbies, a potentially provocative topic for ISB scholarship. To facilitate research on information within hobbies, the article discusses two conceptual devices. Serious leisure (Stebbins, 1982) describes essential characteristics of leisure, establishes that some types are information-rich, and provides a framework to study leisure systematically. The collectivist theory of domain analysis (Hjørland and Albrechtsen, 1995) orients research to the …

Scottish Devolution: Identity And Impact And The Case Of Community Care For The Elderly, Gordon Marnoch Jan 2003

Scottish Devolution: Identity And Impact And The Case Of Community Care For The Elderly, Gordon Marnoch

Gordon Marnoch

This article examines the emergent identity and impact of devolution in Scotland. Using the case of community care for the elderly, a model is set out for capturing the different interpretive perspectives evident in relation to a particular policy area in 1999–2001. The political story of the ‘free personal care’ issue, in which the Scottish Executive were unexpectedly forced into adopting a markedly different policy from the rest of the UK, is examined in some detail. Setting the episode in a broader context, four discursive thematics are identified in relation to the policy case. A model is demonstrated for examining …

Consensus, Legitimacy, And The Exercise Of Judgement In Political Deliberation, Cillian Mcbride Jan 2003

Consensus, Legitimacy, And The Exercise Of Judgement In Political Deliberation, Cillian Mcbride

Cillian McBride

Deliberative Democrats have been criticised for promoting an overly consensual style of politics. Agonistic democrats argue that this is because they allow justice to displace ‘the political’ while others make the opposite charge: deliberative democrats pay insufficient attention to justice and the confrontational style of politics which may be necessary to secure social justice. I argue that the deliberative model aims at strengthening democratic legitimacy, not at producing consensus and that it is centrally concerned with stimulating the exercise of citizens’ capacity for judgement. The duty of civility should be regarded as a duty to make impartial judgements, not as …
