Electricity Market Design: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Peter Cramton Jan 2003

Electricity Market Design: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Peter Cramton

Peter Cramton

This paper examines principles of market design as applied to electricity markets. I illustrate the principles with examples of both good and bad designs. I discuss one of the main design challenges—dealing with market power. I then discuss FERC’s choice of a standard market design.

Ultrapassando O Debate Entre Convergência E Divergência Urbanas: A Arquitetura E O Urbanismo Em Um Contexto Global, Clara Irazabal Jan 2003

Ultrapassando O Debate Entre Convergência E Divergência Urbanas: A Arquitetura E O Urbanismo Em Um Contexto Global, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

Do Pruitt-Igoe Ao World Trade Center: Planejando A Ex/Implosão Do (Pos)Modernismo, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

Historie Centers: Public Imaginaries From Quito, Fernando Carrión Mena Jan 2003

Historie Centers: Public Imaginaries From Quito, Fernando Carrión Mena

Fernando Carrión Mena

In the histories centers, the most varied media and forms of communication converge (telephony, radio, television, postal service, cinema, theater, schools); they embrace the greatest concentration of socializing places (public and civic spaces); they possess the greatest accumulation of concentrated information (1ibraries, archives, buildings); they have the greatest number of symbolic manifestations (churches, monuments, squares); they contain the most diverse means of transportation (ports, railways, vehicles); and they attract multiple users.

In this context, communication plays a central role. Its defects can produce alterations in the functionality and quality of life of the population that lives in the city. But …

Conceptualizing Mediation Use By Patrol Police Officers, Christopher C. Cooper Jan 2003

Conceptualizing Mediation Use By Patrol Police Officers, Christopher C. Cooper

Christopher C. Cooper Dr.

Police officers assigned to patrol duties, in America's big cities in particular, can mediate disputes to which they respond; as well as should make referrals to mediation\conflict resolution centers. When police officers employ excellent social interaction and problem solving skills, situations are de-escalated; the safety of officers and citizens alike is better insured and positive police-citizen interaction is achieved.

Inventory Changes And The Closing Of Econometric Models, Riccardo Fiorito Jan 2003

Inventory Changes And The Closing Of Econometric Models, Riccardo Fiorito

riccardo fiorito

Inventory changes can help econometric models to balance the supply and the demand side and to endogenize utilization variables without resorting to an arbitrary potential output estimate. Both results stem from formulating inventory-augmented production functions in which inventory changes act as a stationary ECM mechanism between value added and final sales. The empirical implementation refers to the Italian Treasury Econometric Model (ITEM) in which inventory changes are obtained as residuals from endogenous value added and spending components.

Inventory Changes And The Closing Of Macroeconometric Models, Riccardo Fiorito Jan 2003

Inventory Changes And The Closing Of Macroeconometric Models, Riccardo Fiorito

riccardo fiorito

Inventory changes can help econometric models to balance the supply and demand side of the aggregate economy. This occurs formulating inventory-augmented production functions that apply to sectotal value added and allowing to obtain an endogenous GDP. Spending components are also endogenous and inventory changes are obtained as the difference between the estimated aggregate supply and demand.

Oil And Product Price Dynamics In International Petroleum Markets, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera, Massimo Giovannini Jan 2003

Oil And Product Price Dynamics In International Petroleum Markets, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera, Massimo Giovannini

Matteo Manera

In this paper we investigate crude oil and products price dynamics. We present a comparison among ten price series of crude oils and fourteen price series of petroleum products, considering four distinct market areas (Mediterranean, North Western Europe, Latin America and North America) over the period 1994-2002. We provide first a complete analysis of crude oil and product price dynamics using cointegration and error correction models. Subsequently we use the error correction specification to predict crude oil prices over the horizon January 2002-June 2002.The main findings of the paper can be summarized as follows: a) differences in quality are crucial …

Star-Garch Models For Stock Market Interactions In The Pacific Basin Region, Japan And Us, Giorgio Busetti, Matteo Manera Jan 2003

Star-Garch Models For Stock Market Interactions In The Pacific Basin Region, Japan And Us, Giorgio Busetti, Matteo Manera

Matteo Manera

We investigate the financial interactions between countries in the Pacific Basin region (Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Japan and US. The originality of the paper is the use of STAR-GARCH models, instead of standard correlationcointegration techniques. For each country in the Pacific Basin region, we find statistically adequate STAR-GARCH models for the series of stock market daily returns, using Nikkei225 and S&P500 as alternative threshold variables. We provide evidence for the leading role of Japan in the period 1988-1990 (pre-Japanese crisis years), whereas our results suggest that the Pacific Basin region countries are more closely linked with the …

Modelling The Load Curve Of Aggregate Electricity Consumption Using Principal Components, Matteo Manera, Angelo Marzullo Jan 2003

Modelling The Load Curve Of Aggregate Electricity Consumption Using Principal Components, Matteo Manera, Angelo Marzullo

Matteo Manera

Since oil is a non-renewable resource with a high environmental impact, and its most common use is to produce combustibles for electricity, reliable methods for modelling electricity consumption can contribute to a more rational employment of this hydrocarbon fuel. In this paper we apply the Principal Components (PC) method to modelling the load curves of Italy, France and Greece on hourly data of aggregate electricity consumption. The empirical results obtained with the PC approach are compared with those produced by the Fourier and constrained smoothing spline estimators. The PC method represents a much simpler and attractive alternative to modelling electricity …

Non-Optimal Levels Of Suburbanization, Philip E. Graves Jan 2003

Non-Optimal Levels Of Suburbanization, Philip E. Graves

PHILIP E GRAVES

Suburbanization has many causes, among which is the attempt to relocate to acquire a more desirable vector of local public goods. The traditional economists' procedure for valuing public goods involves vertical aggregation of marginal willingness to pay, at a given income level. This approach is flawed by failing to recognize that individuals will not work for goods that cannot be acquired individually with higher incomes. There will be a parallel input market failure any time there is a public good output market failure, thus the `given income' of the traditional valuation method is too low. Hence, traditional valuation methods result …

I Don't Know, Philip E. Graves

PHILIP E GRAVES

This is a non-fiction novel, titled I Don't Know. I is in three parts, the first economic (which will seem "liberal" to most), the second political (which will seem "conservative" to most), and the third theological (which will seem weird to most). I think you will find it a fun read, and feel free to distribute it at will.

Wildlife Knowledge Among Migrants In Southern Sumatra, Indonesia: Implications For Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus, Sumianto Tilson, Ronald Tilson Jan 2003

Wildlife Knowledge Among Migrants In Southern Sumatra, Indonesia: Implications For Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus, Sumianto Tilson, Ronald Tilson

Philip J. Nyhus

The value of traditional ecological knowledge for biodiversity research and conservation is widely recognized. The value of wildlife knowledge provided by recent migrants is less clear. Photographs of 10 mammal species were shown to 622 individuals in communities near Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia, to assess wildlife knowledge among recent migrants and to identify socio-economic variables that can be used to identify more knowledgeable informants. Knowledge scores were categorized by taxonomic family, genus and species. Large, charismatic and abundant animals were identified more frequently than smaller and more secretive animals. Higher knowledge scores were significantly associated with males, …

Dangerous Animals In Captivity: Ex Situ Tiger Conflict And Implication For Private Ownership Of Exotic Animals, Philip J. Nyhus, Ronald L. Tilson, J L. Tomlinson Jan 2003

Dangerous Animals In Captivity: Ex Situ Tiger Conflict And Implication For Private Ownership Of Exotic Animals, Philip J. Nyhus, Ronald L. Tilson, J L. Tomlinson

Philip J. Nyhus

The risks associated with tiger attacks on people in the wild are well documented. There may currently be more tigers in captivity than in the wild, but relatively little is known about the risks of injury or death associated with owning and managing captive tigers and other large carnivores. The purpose of this study was to conduct a global assessment of attacks by captive tigers on people, with particular emphasis on cases in the United States. Our analysis of 30 international media sources and additional documents uncovered 59 unique incidents in 1998-2001 in which people were reportedly injured or killed …
