Part 1: The Hampton Roads Economy: Defense Expenditures Become More Important, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Economically speaking, the 21st century has been a good one for Hampton Roads. By many measures – especially growth in employment and income – Hampton Roads now leads the Commonwealth of Virginia. The war in Iraq had a remarkably small negative impact on the region’s economy. Reversing the trend of the 1990s, defense expenditures have become a more important part of the region’s economy.

Part 2: Hampton Roads: A Comparative Tour, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

We compare Hampton Roads to other metropolitan areas in terms of a variety of economic, social and educational variables. We focus in particular on differences between white and black citizens that are apparent in the 2000 U.S. Census and the question of whether a housing price bubble exists in the region.

Part 6: Consolidation Of Public Services In Hampton Roads: Would We Save Money And Enhance The Service We Receive?, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Numerous individuals have suggested that the consolidation of some public services (police, fire, libraries, etc.) in Hampton Roads would save money. The evidence on this score is mixed, but very interesting, and should challenge some public officials.

When new residential and commercial developments occur, do they pay for themselves, or do others subsidize necessary governmental services and infrastructure? The answer depends upon the nature of the situation and the city.

Feathers And Hair, Farideh Dayanim Goldin Jan 2003

Feathers And Hair, Farideh Dayanim Goldin

(First paragraph) Plucking chickens the kosher way is quite an art. According to the laws of kashrut) a chicken should not be cooked or even brought close to a source of heat until it is kashered-bled, salted, and rinsed. The use of fire to sear feathers or hot water to loosen quills is absolutely forbidden. Poultry processors today use the force of air to pluck feathers for kosher markets; but when I lived in Iran, during the '60s and '70s, this job had to be done manually.

Gender Stereotyping In State Executive Elections: Candidate Selection And Success, Richard L. Fox Jan 2003

Gender Stereotyping In State Executive Elections: Candidate Selection And Success, Richard L. Fox

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Research on gender stereotypes has found that voters ascribe certain beliefs and traits to candidates based on the candidate's sex. Most of this research relies on experimental data and examines stereotyping solely in terms of voter decision making. In contrast, we examine state executive office elections to determine if stereotypes influence both candidate selection and success. State executive elections are ideal for studying gender stereotypes as many of the offices focus on specific policy issues that correspond with stereotypical competencies of male and female candidates. We find considerable support for our expectation of an interaction between candidate sex and office …

Work And Family Variables As Related To Paternal Engagement, Responsibility, And Accessibility In Dual-Earner Couples With Young Children, Suzanne M. Nangle, Michelle L. Kelley, William Fals-Stewart, Ronald F. Levant Jan 2003

Work And Family Variables As Related To Paternal Engagement, Responsibility, And Accessibility In Dual-Earner Couples With Young Children, Suzanne M. Nangle, Michelle L. Kelley, William Fals-Stewart, Ronald F. Levant

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fathers and mothers (N = 75 dual-earner couples) of preschool-aged children completed questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., directly interacting with the child), responsibility (i.e., scheduling activities and being accountable for the child's well-being), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child but not in direct interaction). Fathers' reports of responsibility and accessibility were significantly predicted by structural variables and beliefs; however, fathers' reports of engagement were not predicted by work and family variables. Mothers' reports of work and family variables did not predict their reports of father involvement. …

Stretching Conceptual Structures In Classifications Across Languages And Cultures., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Victoria L. Rubin Jan 2003

Stretching Conceptual Structures In Classifications Across Languages And Cultures., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Victoria L. Rubin

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The authors describe the difficulties of translating classifications from a source language and culture to another language and culture. To demonstrate these problems, kinship terms and concepts from native speakers of fourteen languages were collected and analyzed to find differences between their terms and structures and those used in English. Using the representations of kinship terms in the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as examples, the authors identified the source of possible lack of mapping between the domain of kinship in the fourteen languages studied and the LCC and DDC. Finally, some preliminary suggestions …

The Social Structure Of Open Source Software Development Teams, Kevin Crowston, James Howison Jan 2003

The Social Structure Of Open Source Software Development Teams, Kevin Crowston, James Howison

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Open Source Software development teams provide an interesting and convenient setting for studying distributed work. We begin by answering perhaps the most basic question: what is the social structure of these teams? Based on a social network analysis of interactions represented in 62,110 bug reports from 122 large and active projects, we find that some OSS teams are highly centralized, but contrary to expectation, others are not. Furthermore, we find that the level of centralization is negatively correlated with project size, suggesting that larger projects become more modular. The paper makes a further methodological contribution by identifying appropriate analysis approaches …

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne Roel Diekema Jan 2003

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne Roel Diekema

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems enable users to formulate queries in their native language to retrieve documents in foreign languages. Because queries and documents in CLIR do not necessarily share the same language, translation is needed before matching can take place. This translation step tends to cause a reduction in the retrieval performance of CLIR as compared to monolingual information retrieval. The prevailing CLIR approach and the focus of this study is query translation. The translation of queries is inherently difficult due to the lack of a one-to-one mapping of a lexical item and its meaning, which creates lexical ambiguity. …

Misplaced Marketing Colas Big And Little: Anti‐Trust Laws, Non‐Regulation And The Disabled Marketing Of Small Brands, Joyce M. Wolburg Jan 2003

Misplaced Marketing Colas Big And Little: Anti‐Trust Laws, Non‐Regulation And The Disabled Marketing Of Small Brands, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Shelf access fees and cooperative merchandising agreements are tactics that clearly give power to big business, and nowhere is this more evident than in the soft drink wars. The lack of legal protection against these tactics by US regulators can squeeze small brands out of the retail environment and effectively disable the marketing strategy of small soft drink companies and other small businesses. Thus, marketing becomes not only misplaced, but irrelevant.

Ethnohistory And Paleopathology Of A Late Woodland Dog, Brendan Burke Jan 2003

Ethnohistory And Paleopathology Of A Late Woodland Dog, Brendan Burke
