Using The Theory Of Planned Behaviour To Predict Leisure Educators’ Intentions To Use Instructional Technology, Jennifer Y. Mak, Craig M. Ross

Management Faculty Research

The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) (Ajzen, 1991b) was applied to the prediction and explanation of the intention to use instructional technology by using a mail questionnaire (n = 406) of leisure educators in the United States and Canada. Based on structural equation modeling, it was found that the key determinants of the TPB, attitude toward instructional technology, subjective norm toward instructional technology, and perceived behavioural control toward instructional technology accounted for 50% of the leisure educators’ intention to use instructional technology. The strongest predictor of intention was attitude toward instructional technology, followed by subjective norm toward instructional technology and …

Methods And Techniques For Studying The History Of Sociology In America, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Self-Mutilation And Homeless Youth: The Role Of Family Abuse, Street Experiences, And Mental Disorders, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson Jan 2003

Self-Mutilation And Homeless Youth: The Role Of Family Abuse, Street Experiences, And Mental Disorders, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt D. Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Self-mutilation, which is the act of deliberately harming oneself, has been overlooked in studies of homeless and runaway youth. Given their high rates of abuse and mental health disorders, which are associated with self-mutilation, homeless and runaway youth provide an ideal sample in which to investigate factors associated with self-mutilation among a nonclinical population. Based on interviews with 428 homeless and runaway youth aged 16 to 19 years in 4 Midwestern states, the current study revealed widespread prevalence of self-mutilation among these young people. Multivariate analyses indicated that sexual abuse, ever having stayed on the street, deviant subsistence strategies, and …

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy Schindler

Criss Library Faculty Publications

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. The project set …

Collegiality: An Atmosphere For Expanding Intellectual Stimulation, Tami Echavarria Robinson Jan 2003

Collegiality: An Atmosphere For Expanding Intellectual Stimulation, Tami Echavarria Robinson

The Christian Librarian

Libraries are the arena where intellectual interaction takes place through the universal conversation of scholarship. Librarians share a common commitment to learning and service. In addition Christian librarians share a calling to knowledge and service that comes from the Holy Scriptures. Aspects of integrating our Christian faith, through the professional environment we create in our workplace, are considered. Collegiality as the means to achieve a productive library ambience for scholarship is suggested. When a Library has an atmosphere conducive to promoting learning it is a place of intellectual stimulation where the culture is collegial and the values of Christianity are …

Plagiarism On The Internet, John Jaeger Jan 2003

Plagiarism On The Internet, John Jaeger

The Christian Librarian

This article addresses the problem of plagiarism on the Internet and offers practical guidelines and instructions for dealing with that problem. While technology-based tools such as plagiarism detection services are discussed, primary focus is given to stopping plagiarism before it occurs. Prevention ahead of time is considered far better than detection later in time. Good prevention techniques involve educating the faculty in terms of how they can better "plagiarism-proof' their assignments, and encouraging the administration to create academic plagiarism policies, academic integrity codes, and Christian academic policy statements. This article developed from a workshop presentation made at the 2002 Association …

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy Jan 2003

New Frontiers In Christian Fiction, Leanne Hardy

The Christian Librarian

Christian fiction must strive for a new quality of writing and be willing to go beyond what is "safe" if it is going to have an impact outside the church. Although such fiction may include language and situations that are not acceptable among Christians, it will glorify God by presenting the world as he sees it and grappling with deep spiritual issues rather than using cliches to brush over them. Librarians should support quality Christian fiction by purchasing it, recommending it and praying for those in the publishing industry.

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker Jan 2003

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker

The Christian Librarian

Confronting the challenges to any academic institution posed by the revolution in information resources since the appearance of the Internet can be a daunting task. Providing the financial and human resources required to provide reliable and secure access can alone be a major hurdle. The specialized equipment needed to effectively incorporate the new resources into student learning environments present an additional burden. The need to collaboratively manage the systems and adapt staffing patterns to the new resources can challenge the skills of the best administrators. The patterns of information seeking behavior exhibited by students in today's richly diverse information environment …

The Ghana Community-Based Health Planning And Services Initiative: Fostering Evidence-Based Organizational Change And Development In A Resource-Constrained Setting, Frank K. Nyonator, John Koku Awoonor-Williams, James F. Phillips, Tanya C. Jones, Robert A. Miller Jan 2003

Miller

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Research projects demonstrating ways to improve health services often fail to have an impact on what national health programs actually do. An approach to evidence-based policy development has been launched in Ghana that bridges the gap between research and program implementation. The Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative employs strategies tested in the successful Navrongo experiment to guide national health reforms that mobilize volunteers, resources, and cultural institutions to support community-based primary health care. Over the 1999 to 2002 period, 100 out of the 110 districts in Ghana adopted a CHPS initiative. This paper reviews features of the initiative …

Empowering Communities To Respond To Hiv/Aids: Ndola Demonstration Project On Maternal And Child Health: Operations Research Final Report, Hope Humana, Linkages, National Food And Nutrition Commission, Ndola District Health Management Team, Horizons Program, Zambia Integrated Health Project

HIV and AIDS

A pre–post intervention study conducted in Zambia by Horizons and local NGOs and governmental organizations demonstrated that HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and infant feeding counseling (IFC) to mothers attending maternal and child health (MCH) clinics are vital components of any mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) reduction strategy, whether or not antiretrovirals (ARVs) are available. These interventions enable mothers to make informed and healthy decisions. Data from the Ndola Demonstration Project yielded encouraging results from efforts to improve the capacity of mothers to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their infant. The interventions succeeded in raising …

Positive Orientation Towards The Vernacular Among The Talysh Of Sumgayit, Calvin F. Tiessen Jan 2003

Positive Orientation Towards The Vernacular Among The Talysh Of Sumgayit, Calvin F. Tiessen

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This thesis looks at the identification of positive vernacular orientation in the Talysh community of the city of Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, for the purpose of gaining a greater understanding of its causes. Positive vernacular orientation is described in three areas of sociolinguistic behaviour: patterns of vernacular language use, vernacular language proficiency and frequency of vernacular-speaking individuals in social networks. Variation in vernacular orientation is shown to pattern itself according to differences in generation and time of arrival or birth in Sumgayit.

Creation Of A Unified Management Information System For Three Ngos In The West Bank And Gaza, Health, Development, Information And Policy Institute

Reproductive Health

The goal of the Pilot Health Project (PHP) has been to improve the health status of Palestinian women and children. To further this goal, the Health, Development, Information and Policy Institute (HDIP) was given the responsibility to develop a management information system (MIS) for the collection, storage, processing, and dissemination of information for PHP clinics. In cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) and various healthcare providers and MIS professionals, HDIP worked through a carefully organized and highly participatory process to design and develop the MIS for the PHP. This report reviews that process and presents the features of …

Improving Postpartum Care Among Low Parity Mothers In Palestine, Center For Development In Primary Health Care (Cdphc)

Reproductive Health

In an effort to improve the health status of Palestinian women and their children in the West Bank and Gaza, USAID, in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Health and a number of NGOs, designed and funded a 28-month pilot activity, the Pilot Health Project (PHP), that was expected to have a positive impact on the health of women and children. This report describes the results of the intervention designed to measure the effectiveness of a second home visit on low-parity women in 1) improving their knowledge and practices regarding their own health as well as the health of their …

Beyond Training: Law Librarianship's Quest For The Pedagogy Of Legal Research Education, Paul D. Callister Jan 2003

Beyond Training: Law Librarianship's Quest For The Pedagogy Of Legal Research Education, Paul D. Callister

Faculty Works

The paper (I) outlines the nature and extent of the dissatisfaction with legal research instruction and demonstrates that the problem predates computer-assisted legal research, (II) presents the history of the debate (focusing on a heated exchange between advocates of a "process-oriented" approach and proponents of the traditional, "bibliographic" methods), and (III) presents the requisite elements of a satisfactory pedagogical model, discussing various issues surrounding each of these elements.

In part III, the paper proposes that a complete pedagogical model requires (A) an identifiable and fully understood objective in teaching legal research (which objective must distinguish between the kinds of research …

Agricultural Land Ownership And Tenure Patterns In Nebraska, Bruce B. Johnson Jan 2003

Agricultural Land Ownership And Tenure Patterns In Nebraska, Bruce B. Johnson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Agricultural land in Nebraska is a significant asset of wealth and a key economic input into the state’s economy. It is no mere coincidence that Nebraska consistently ranks fourth among the 50 states in total cash receipts from farm marketings while also ranking fourth in land acreage in farms and third in terms of irrigated acreage. Consequently, it is of considerable importance to identify and understand the basic patterns of land ownership and tenure that exist within the state.

Every 10 years the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducts a national land ownership survey of landlords as well as farm operators. …

Borderline Personality Disorder : A Comparison Of Linehan And Kernberg's Treatment Modalities, Janet M. Riley Jan 2003

Borderline Personality Disorder : A Comparison Of Linehan And Kernberg's Treatment Modalities, Janet M. Riley

Graduate Research Papers

About 30% of clients worldwide are diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) (Bohus et al., 2000). BPD is a complex disorder and difficult to treat. Therefore, it is necessary for counselors to gain as much knowledge about treatment modalities and their effectiveness as possible. This paper attempts to define BPD by looking closely at its history.and describing the criteria for diagnosis. Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Kernberg's Object Relational Theory (ORT) are compared as to their effectiveness in working with clients who exhibit symptoms of BPD.

People In Nature: Environmental History Of The Kennebec River, Maine, Daniel J. Michor Jan 2003

People In Nature: Environmental History Of The Kennebec River, Maine, Daniel J. Michor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quality of a river affects the tributaries, lakes, and estuary it feeds; it affects the wildlife and vegetation that depend on the river for energy, nutrients, and habitat, and also affects the human community in the form of use, access, pride, and sustainability. In an age of mass consumerism and materialism, dwindling natural resources and wild spaces, and advanced technology, the ability to make a living and at the same time enjoy the benefits of rural living is increasingly difficult. Using the entire Kennebec River watershed as the scale of investigation with particular focus on the river corridor itself, …

Robert L. Meriwether And The South Caroliniana Library, Nicholas Meriwether Jan 2003

Robert L. Meriwether And The South Caroliniana Library, Nicholas Meriwether

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Though praised as an outstanding scholar, Robert L. Meriwether was perhaps most proud of his work in helping other scholars as a teacher, editor, archivist, and librarian, with the founding of the South Caroliniana Library as the pinnacle of those efforts. Born in Edgefield County, South Carolina, in 1890, his love of history and affection for his native state seem inextricably intertwined from a young age. This might be expected from someone raised in the wake of Reconstruction in a state that had endured so much loss and upheaval in the Civil War and its aftermath. Indeed, in many ways, …
