Expertise, Trust, And Communication About Food Biotechnology, John Lang, Karen O'Neill, William Hallman Dec 2002

Expertise, Trust, And Communication About Food Biotechnology, John Lang, Karen O'Neill, William Hallman

John T. Lang

Experts typically presume to speak with authority about complex concerns, such as agricultural biotechnology. Research indi- cates, however, that the effectiveness of risk communication depends on perceptions about the trustworthiness of the institu- tions and experts providing information. This exploratory study investigates how experts from a range of food-associated pro- fessions and institutions perceive their own roles in communi- cating about biotechnology. Most of the respondents rated scientists and other experts as most likely to tell the truth about biotechnology, but many felt that members of the public were most influenced by the mass media and by critics of biotechnol- …

Factor Structure Of The Spielberger Anger Expression Scales When Used With Australian Prisoners, Greg Dear, Bruce Watt, John Dockerill Dec 2002

Factor Structure Of The Spielberger Anger Expression Scales When Used With Australian Prisoners, Greg Dear, Bruce Watt, John Dockerill

Bruce Watt

The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory administered to prison inmates has supported the factor structure of the three anger expression scales although this structure has not been verified with Australian participants. Data collected from 397 Western Australian male prisoners produced a factor structure consistent with the scale structure outlined in the 1991 manual. Scale means and standard deviations were similar to those reported for the U.S. and Canadian prisoners. It is therefore appropriate to use the standard scoring procedures with Australian male prisoners.

The Sanctuary Of Apollo Hypoakraios And Imperial Athens, Peter Nulton Dec 2002

The Sanctuary Of Apollo Hypoakraios And Imperial Athens, Peter Nulton

Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.

The Cave Sanctuary of Apollo on the North Slope of the Acropolis at Athens was investigated in 1896-97 and produced a rich collection of inscriptions relating to the cult. These inscriptions are published in full for the first time in this work. The author discusses the history of the cult. Far from being of great antiquity as readers of Euripides' "Ion" have long assumed, the cult was instituted in the time of Augustus when "The Athenians thought it fitting that their archons swear an oath that upheld tradition in connection to Apollo Patroos, but simultaneously honored their 'new Apollo'", the …

Transporting Raw Materials And Shaping The World-System: Creating Hegemony Via Raw Materials Access Strategies In Holland And Japan, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell Dec 2002

Transporting Raw Materials And Shaping The World-System: Creating Hegemony Via Raw Materials Access Strategies In Holland And Japan, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

In this paper, we examine the roles of raw materials and their transport as key generative sectors in the ascent of two rising core economies, Holland and Japan. We show that the organizational, technical, and informational capacities developed by these states and by the Dutch and Japanese shipbuilding, shipping, and raw materials firms to assure access to and to transport raw materials led to the creation of those capacities across many sectors of their national economies, driving the broader processes of national development and the rise of these nations to preeminent positions in the capitalist world-economy. By comparing two cases …

Returning To The America That Was Meant To Be: The Cinematic Re-Emergence Of Baseball’S Vision Of Community, Robert Rudd, Marshall Most Dec 2002

Returning To The America That Was Meant To Be: The Cinematic Re-Emergence Of Baseball’S Vision Of Community, Robert Rudd, Marshall Most

Robert L. Rudd

In 1984, an aging slugger by the name of Roy Hobbs captured the imaginations of movie-goers across America. Today, over 25 years later, Barry Levinson's The Natural (1984) remains one of the most popular baseball films ever. As it turns out, however, Levinson's popular portrayal of the New York Knights' enigmatic superstar was only the beginning. The Natural marked the beginning resurgence in the baseball film genre that was to last through the end of the 20th century. It wasn't just Robert Redford as the quiet, troubled, mythic hero who was popular. The themes of baseball itself -- at least …

Generative Sectors And The New Historical Materialism: Economic Ascent And The Cumulatively Sequential Restructuring Of The World Economy, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell Dec 2002

Generative Sectors And The New Historical Materialism: Economic Ascent And The Cumulatively Sequential Restructuring Of The World Economy, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

The causes and consequences of inequality between national economies, the as- cent to dominance within the world hierarchy of economies, and the dynamics driving the material intensification and spatial expansion of production and trade in the world economy have long been core questions in a wide range of fields concerned with economic change and development and with international rela- tions. In this article, we propose that one of the fundamental mechanisms driving all three of these processes for at least the last 500 years has been a dynamic ten- sion, or contradiction, between the economies of scale that reduce relative …

Institutionalizing Diversity: Living And Learning Communities At Occidental College, Eric Newhall, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Brandon Carroll Dec 2002

Institutionalizing Diversity: Living And Learning Communities At Occidental College, Eric Newhall, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Brandon Carroll

Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman

At Occidental College we believe an effective strategy for institutionalizing diversity in the midst of ongoing national “culture wars” is to adopt educational models and practices that nurture and sustain diversities of all kinds, while simultaneously helping our undergraduates to strengthen their skills in critical thinking, expository writing, and public speaking. Furthermore, we see no need to choose between the twin goals of our college mission—excellence and equity. We consider these two goals to be inextricably intertwined. Because many U.S. students are reared and educated in isolated racial enclaves, we need educational models and practices that interrupt and reverse this …

“Policing The Police,” Review Of Are Cops Racist?, By H. Mac Donald, Kenneth Colburn Dec 2002

“Policing The Police,” Review Of Are Cops Racist?, By H. Mac Donald, Kenneth Colburn

Kenneth D. Colburn

Law enforcement officers are an ever-present target for criticism. There are exceptions, of course: praise was widespread and heartfelt throughout the nation for the selfless sacrifice of New York City police officers (and firefighters) who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. As every police officer knows, however, the police are more likely to be the subjects of criticism than of praise. There are some obvious and some less than obvious reasons for the basic ambivalence Americans have toward the police.

Does The Effect Of Familial Disruption On Delinquency Vary According To Circumstances? An Investigation Of Interaction Effects, Christopher Kierkus, Douglas Baer Dec 2002

Does The Effect Of Familial Disruption On Delinquency Vary According To Circumstances? An Investigation Of Interaction Effects, Christopher Kierkus, Douglas Baer

Christopher A. Kierkus

Empirical research has shown that familial disruption is associated with delinquent behavior. Recent investigations suggest that reduced levels of attachment in non-traditional families may be responsible for this effect. However, it is not known if the impact of familial disruption varies according to familial SES or the gender of the children. Some authors have argued that the criminogenic influence is greater for boys while others have maintained that girls are more adversely influenced. Similar contradictory evidence has been reported with respect to SES. Finally, a substantial number of studies have shown that the influence of familial disruption is largely invariant …

Reliability And The Actfl Oral Proficiency Interview: Reporting Indices Of Interrater Consistency And Agreement For 19 Languages, Eric Surface, Erich Dierdorff Dec 2002

Reliability And The Actfl Oral Proficiency Interview: Reporting Indices Of Interrater Consistency And Agreement For 19 Languages, Eric Surface, Erich Dierdorff

Erich C. Dierdorff

The reliability of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) has not been reported since ACTFL revised its speaking proficiency guidelines in 1999. Reliability data for assessments should be reported periodically to provide users with enough information to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the assessment. This study provided the most comprehensive analysis of ACTFL OPI reliability to date, reporting interrater consistency and agreement data for 19 different languages. Overall, the interrater reliability of the ACTFL OPI was found to be very high. These results demonstrate the importance of using an OPI assessment program that has a well-designed interview process, a well-articulated …

Market Transparency And Market Structure: The Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act Of 1999, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 2002

Market Transparency And Market Structure: The Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act Of 1999, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

The premise of the Livestock Mandatory Reporting Act of 1999 is that enhanced transparency promotes competition. This article provides a theoretical study of the consequences of such transparency for the structure, conduct, and performance of the livestock industry. I conclude that the usefulness of the Act to the livestock industry may not be in the value of reported information to feeders, as the supporters of the Act claim. Rather, by forcing packers to pool information at negligible marginal cost, the Act may foster more competitive conduct in the procurement of livestock.

The Effects Of Interdisciplinary Instruction On Simulation Performance”. Simulation And Gaming, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Deborah Skinner, Clark A.

Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde

Simulations are often used in business courses to expose students to real-world decision making. This study examines the implications of specific subject matter intervention by faculty members in economics and marketing on the choices made by students and the consequences of those choices in an online finance simulation. The findings, although mixed, suggest that an interdisciplinary intervention in an online finance simulation has the potential to improve the quality of decisions made and, consequently, overall student performance, especially when intervention material is new to the students.
