Looking Good : College Women And Body Image, 1875-1930, Margaret Lowe

Margaret Lowe

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, as young women began entering college in greater numbers than ever before, physicians and social critics charged that campus life posed grave hazards to the female constitution and women's reproductive health. "A girl could study and learn," Dr. Edward Clarke warned in his widely read 1873 book Sex in Education, "but she could not do all this and retain uninjured health, and a future secure from neuralgia, uterine disease, hysteria, and other derangements of the nervous system." For half a century, ideas such as Dr. Clarke's framed the debate over a woman's place …

The Iron Law Of Selfishness: Response To A Comment By Alexander Field, Ted Bergstrom Dec 2002

The Iron Law Of Selfishness: Response To A Comment By Alexander Field, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Alexander Field was not convinced of a result that I claimed in my JEP 2001 paper that in "haystack models" with non-assortative mating, if the number of descendants of founding group members is determined by an n-player prisoners' dilemma game, then the population will converge to a population of defectors. He thought that the result applied only if the groups were large. I respond with a more detailed discussion and show how the result works even when groups have only two members.

Advocating For Controversial Issues: The Effect Of Activism On Compliance‐Gaining Strategy Likelihood Of Use, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron, Dominique Brossard Dec 2002

Advocating For Controversial Issues: The Effect Of Activism On Compliance‐Gaining Strategy Likelihood Of Use, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron, Dominique Brossard

Michelle L. Campo

Previous research has demonstrated that compliance‐gaining strategies can he arrayed on an unidimensional continuum, anchored by positive, pro‐social strategies and negative, antisocial strategies (Hunter & Boster, 1987; Rolojf & Barnicott, 1978, 1979). Individual differences, including argumentativeness and verbal aggression (Boster & Levine, 1988), have been shown to affect one's ethical threshold. This ethical threshold is consistent with a Guttman simplex and determines both how many, as well as how antisocial, compliance‐gaining strategies individuals may consider using. Activists, who are highly involved and committed to their cause and who tend to be less verbally aggressive and more argumentative than the general …

"She Says, He Says”: Women’S And Men’S Views Of The Composition Of Boards, Alison Sheridan, Gina Milgate Dec 2002

"She Says, He Says”: Women’S And Men’S Views Of The Composition Of Boards, Alison Sheridan, Gina Milgate

Gina C Milgate

While women have continued to increase their representation in the paid workforce, their representation on corporate boards in Australia remains very low. In this paper, the views of men and women board members of publicly-listed companies in Australia concerning the adequacy of the composition of boards and the factors contributing to women’s low representation are explored and contrasted. It seems that these “successful” men and women have significantly different views on the benefits of homogeneity or diversity of board membership. While the men believe the current composition is generally adequate, the women are concerned about the lack of diversity of …

Envisioning The Caucous Community: Online Newspaper Editors Conceptualize Their Political Roles, Jane Singer, Mirerza Gonzalez-Velez Dec 2002

Envisioning The Caucous Community: Online Newspaper Editors Conceptualize Their Political Roles, Jane Singer, Mirerza Gonzalez-Velez

Jane B. Singer

This article explores how local newspaper editors, as they move online and develop increasingly comprehensive and sophisticated Web sites, conceptualize the ways in which they might take advantage of the opportunities afforded by this new medium. To do so, it considers five caucus-specific sites in light of the notion of a potentially reinvigorated public sphere. The results suggest that despite the participatory nature of the medium, local newspapers' efforts to facilitate formation of an online democratic community remain tentative. Online editors recognize interactivity as a key attribute of the Web, but most are only just beginning to explore ways to …

Bayesian Modelling And Forecasting Of Intra-Day Electricity Load, Remy Cottet, Michael Smith Dec 2002

Bayesian Modelling And Forecasting Of Intra-Day Electricity Load, Remy Cottet, Michael Smith

Michael Stanley Smith

With the advent of wholesale electricity markets there has been renewed focus on intra-day electricity load forecasting. This paper employs a multi-equation regression model with a diagonal first order stationary vector autoregresson (VAR) for modeling and forecasting intra-day electricity load. The correlation structure of the disturbances to the VAR and the appropriate subset of regressors are explored using Bayesian model selection methodology. The full spectrum of finite sample inference is obtained using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling scheme. This includes the predictive distribution of load and the distribution of the time and level of daily peak load, something …

How Reality Bites: The Production Of Australian Soap Operas, Michael Sergi, Peter Dodds Dec 2002

How Reality Bites: The Production Of Australian Soap Operas, Michael Sergi, Peter Dodds

Michael Sergi

Soap opera in Australia is driven artistically by the bottom line, according to Peter Dodds, the producer of the archetypal Australian soap Neighbours, and to Michael Sergi, a freelance director and academic. The meaning of any particular episode is best understood as being filtered by constraints governing production and direction. The specific production and direction processes illuminate much debate about soaps.

Partner Violence And Major Depression In Women: A Community Study Of Chinese Americans., M Hicks, Z Lee Dec 2002

Partner Violence And Major Depression In Women: A Community Study Of Chinese Americans., M Hicks, Z Lee

Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks

This cross-sectional, retrospective study used epidemiological and anthropological methods toward two aims: 1) to examine associations between partner violence and major depression in a community probability sample of women and 2) to provide new data on partner violence in Chinese Americans. In this study, 181 Chinese American women were interviewed, with 178 completing structured sections on CIDI 2.1 major depression and on partner violence history. Results indicate that a history of partner violence is associated with significantly higher rates of lifetime, 12-month, and current major depression in this community population. This effect is specific and independent of other factors. Partner …

Web Citation Availability: Analysis And Implications For Scholarship, Mary Casserly, James Bird Dec 2002

Web Citation Availability: Analysis And Implications For Scholarship, Mary Casserly, James Bird

James E Bird

Five hundred citations to Internet resources from articles published in library and information science journals in 1999 and 2000 were profiled and searched on the Web. The majority contained partial bibliographic information and no date viewed. Most URLs pointed to content pages with “edu” or “org” domains and did not include a tilde. More than half (56.4%) were permanent, 81.4 percent were available on the Web, and searching the Internet Archive increased the availability rate to 89.2 percent. Content, domain, and directory depth were associated with availability. Few of the journals provided instruction on citing digital resources. Eight suggestions for …

Integrity And Presidential Approval, 1980-2000, Brian Newman Dec 2002

Integrity And Presidential Approval, 1980-2000, Brian Newman

Brian Newman

Do individuals' assessments of the president's integrity consistently affect their evaluations of his job performance? Previous research suggests that they might, but extant studies typically do not directly examine the effects of these assessments. Those that do have examined only a few time points, leaving the question of whether integrity assessments consistently affect approval across presidencies unresolved. Further, they do not examine the effects of integrity on Bill Clinton's approval after the Lewinsky scandal, a time when many argued that integrity assessments were irrelevant to evaluations of his job performance. This study examines the effects of integrity assessments on approval …

Does Trade Liberalization Make The Porter Hypothesis Less Relevant?, Neil Campbell Dec 2002

Does Trade Liberalization Make The Porter Hypothesis Less Relevant?, Neil Campbell

Neil Campbell

The Porter Hypothesis refers to the idea that environmental regulations push firms into developing and adopting new technologies. Controversially, it asserts that the investments in new technology that the firms are pushed into making would be profitable irrespective of whether the regulations had have been put in place. In this paper a simple model is used to illustrate a Porter Hypothesis situation. This framework allows us to establish what conditions are required for a tariff reduction to be an alternative to environmental regulations. That is, we look at a case where, under tariff protection, the firm will only invest in …
