Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes Dec 2002

Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes

Betsy Rymes

Over the years, linguistic anthropological research has shown how classrooms are socializing institutions and how language functions as one medium through which this socialization is accomplished. Early work in the field has captured the immediacy of social practice and language use in educational contexts, and has created useful characterizations of variations in communicative competence. The present work builds on the strengths of prior work, showing how new theoretical concepts and empirical methods developed in linguistic anthropology over the last decade can further illuminate educational settings. The authors introduce an updated Linguistic Anthropology of Education which recognizes that, in the rapidly changing …

Cultural Persuadables, Kristine Fitch Dec 2002

Cultural Persuadables, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

This article explores the subtle and pervasive influence of culture on persuasion. Based on comparison across ethnographic case studies, I propose that cultural premises and norms delineate a range of what may and what must be persuaded. Outside that range lie actions requiring no persuasive appeal because the cultural premises and norms are so strongly influential that the persuasive work is already done, and actions so contrary to cultural norms and premises that no persuasive appeal in the usual sense could work. A proposed cultural model of persuasion incorporates social components as well, specifically relational codes, face wants, and interactional …

The Secession Reference And The Limits Of Law, Richard Kay Dec 2002

The Secession Reference And The Limits Of Law, Richard Kay

Richard Kay

When the Supreme Court of Canada issued its judgment on the legality of "unilateral" Quebec secession in August 1998 many Canadians did not know what to make of it. The Court held that the only lawful way in which Quebec might depart the Canadian federation was through one of the amendment mechanisms provided in the Constitution Act 1982. It thus affirmed that Quebec could not secede without the agreement of at least the Houses of the federal Parliament and some number of provincial legislative assemblies. Prime Minister Chretien declared the next day that the judgement was a "victory for all …

A Formative Evaluation Of Animal Watch, Ivon Arroyo, Tome Muray, Joseph Beck, Beverly Woolf, Carole Beal

Ivon Arroyo

We present the results of a deep formaive evaluation of AnimalWatch, an intelligent tutor for arithmetic. Students leamed with AnimalWatch, and had a poscive experience with it. Still, we detailed AnimalWatch selected too easy problems. We proposed different hypotheses for this beha* ior and analyzed the performance of each ITS component, by observing the intarctiorrs of hundreds of students with the system. We conclude with a report of lessons learned that would make ITS better.

A Role Of The Basal Ganglia In Movement: The Effect Of Precues On Discrete Bi-Directional Movements In Parkinson's Disease, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon, Quincy Almeida, Linda Grantier, Mandar Jog Dec 2002

A Role Of The Basal Ganglia In Movement: The Effect Of Precues On Discrete Bi-Directional Movements In Parkinson's Disease, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon, Quincy Almeida, Linda Grantier, Mandar Jog

Andrew M. Johnson

The effect of a precue on improving movement initiation (i.e., reaction time; RT) is well understood, whereas its influence on movement execution (i.e., movement time; MT) has rarely been examined. The current study investigated the influence of a directional precue (i.e., left vs. right) on the RT and MT of simple and discrete bi-directional movements in a large sample of Parkinson's disease patients and healthy control participants. Both patients and controls were tested twice, with testing sessions separated by 2 hours. Patients were tested first following an overnight levodopa withdrawal and again after they had taken their medication. Both patients …

Information-Seeking Habits Of Environmental Scientists: A Study Of Interdisciplinary Scientists At The Environmental Protection Agency In Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Janet Crane Dec 2002

Information-Seeking Habits Of Environmental Scientists: A Study Of Interdisciplinary Scientists At The Environmental Protection Agency In Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Janet Crane

Janet M Crane

This study describes a questionnaire survey of interdisciplinary scientists conducting research at The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The survey was conducted to gain a clearer picture of how the interdisciplinary scientist seeks information, and in particular how the interdisciplinary scientist manages his/her time in regard to information-gathering tasks. Results indicate that many participants have at least some difficulty in keeping up with research in their field(s) of study in regard to time. As a result, many participants do at least some of their information-gathering in their off-time or delegate certain research responsibilities to …

Pyromania: Fact Or Fiction?, Rebekah Doley Dec 2002

Pyromania: Fact Or Fiction?, Rebekah Doley

Rebekah Doley

The issue of deliberate firesetting is a growing concern in Australia. Every hour of every day in Australia at least one arson fire is lit and this type of criminal behaviour is costing the country over $157m annually in property losses alone. Although much has been written on the subject of arson there remains substantial confusion about the nature and extent of pyromania within the arsonist population. This paper explores some of the common misperceptions that exist in the literature and attempts to clarify the true magnitude of pyromania in Australia's arsonist population.

Thoughts On American Manufacturing Decline And Revitalization, Timothy Bartik Dec 2002

Thoughts On American Manufacturing Decline And Revitalization, Timothy Bartik

Timothy J. Bartik

The recent decline in American manufacturing probably reflects long-run problems. A sensible approach to revitalizing American manufacturing would focus on overcoming inefficiencies in the development of manufacturing, such as problems in small- and medium-sized manufacturers getting information about deploying new technologies. This approach to revitalizing manufacturing can best be implemented through federal efforts to encourage and support state and local economic development policies that help enhance manufacturing productivity. A decentralized approach to the revitalization of manufacturing encourages a variety of creative policies, is adaptable to local conditions, and is consistent with American political traditions.

Psychological Testing: Rogues, Romance And Roadside Assistance, Carol Gill Dec 2002

Psychological Testing: Rogues, Romance And Roadside Assistance, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

Psychological testing has the mystique of white magic…potential and existing employees complete several relatively brief paper and pencil tests and the organization receives a concise report (accurate to the percentile!) that is able to describe personality, intelligence and various other significant characteristics in detail…to predict the future! This magic though, in most cases, can only be performed by a witch doctor (Psychologist), which contributes to the “black box” aura of testing. Despite the reported validity of testing there are a range of methodological and ethical issues in using psychological tests, however, the most important question is how significant is the …
