Information Literacy And Writing Across The Curriculum: Sharing The Vision, James Elmborg
James K. Elmborg
Points out the similarities and differences between library instruction and writing instruction in the higher education curriculum. Notes that information literacy librarians can learn from the experiences of composition instructors regarding curricular revision and reform. Suggests that one of the keys to information literacy reaching its potential is to find common ground with programs like Writing across the Curriculum.

Cost-Of-Living Calculators On The Web: An Empirical Snapshot, Joseph Zumalt, Rebecca Smith, Yoo-Seong Song
Cost-Of-Living Calculators On The Web: An Empirical Snapshot, Joseph Zumalt, Rebecca Smith, Yoo-Seong Song
Joseph R. Zumalt
Employment-related resources have always been a vital part of the reference collection in academic and public libraries. To assist job seekers, the Web is now presenting free and interesting opportunities for collecting cost-of-living data. However, librarians need to be advised of their relevance and reliability. This article looks at four well-known salary and/or cost-of-living calculator commercial Web sites: Homestore.com, Monstermoving.com, BestPlaces.net, and Salary.com. The Web sites are compared in terms of value-added content. By presenting the potential salary differences of a hypothetical relocation from one U.S city to twenty-six other U.S. cities, this study identifies the anomalies found when using …

Las Abejas: Pacifist Resistance And Syncretic Identities In A Globalizing Chiapas, Marco Tavanti
Las Abejas: Pacifist Resistance And Syncretic Identities In A Globalizing Chiapas, Marco Tavanti
Marco Tavanti
Las Abejas came to be known by the international community as the civil counterpart to the neozapatista movements and as a Christian pacifist movement. This book presents the voices of Las Abejas and of numerous collaborators alongside an innovative theoretical analysis of the dynamics of identity construction. The uniqueness of this study is the analysis of the role of international human rights observers in relation to indigenous communities in resistance. In this fascinating study, Marco Tavanti explains how cultural, religious, political, human rights and nonviolent frameworks combine in a syncretic identity of resistance.

Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan Houseman, Machiko Osawa
Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan Houseman, Machiko Osawa
Susan N. Houseman
This book reveals the considerable variation in the levels of growth in a broad set of nonstandard work arrangements while presenting a comprehensive view of how, as a result, the nature of the employment relationship is changing within and among countries. The international roster of economists, sociologists, and labor law experts who contributed draw on cross-country variations in economic conditions and institutional characteristics to explain why some arrangements have grown faster in some countries than in others and what this means for workers. By considering a broad array of nonstandard work arrangements in a number of economies, the authors provide …

A Meta-Analysis Of Job Analysis Reliability, Erich Dierdorff, Mark Wilson
A Meta-Analysis Of Job Analysis Reliability, Erich Dierdorff, Mark Wilson
Erich C. Dierdorff
Average levels of interrater and intrarater reliability for job analysis data were investigated using meta-analysis. Forty-six studies and 299 estimates of reliability were cumulated. Data were categorized by specificity (generalized work activity or task data), source (incumbents, analysts, or technical experts), and descriptive scale (frequency, importance, difficulty, time-spent, and the Position Analysis Questionnaire). Task data initially produced higher estimates of interrater reliability than generalized work activity data and lower estimates of intrarater reliability. When estimates were corrected for scale length and number of raters by using the Spearman-Brown formula, task data had higher interrater and intrarater reliabilities. Incumbents displayed the …

Opportunities For Real-Time Digital Reference Service, Matthew Marsteller, Jackie Schmitt-Marsteller
Matthew Marsteller
This article explores the opportunities that real-time digital reference service can offer to a variety of library settings from the independent public library to the large multi-campus university or the multi-national corporation. There are many occasions when a real-time digital reference service will be the optimal solution for a portion of a library’s reference service. The authors’ goal is to offer our original ideas, and examples from the literature, that will stimulate thought about real-time digital reference services that could be offered by your libraries. The numerous ideas and examples should provide the reader with workable methods for extending the …
