Locating Global Legacies In Tana Toraja, Indonesia, Kathleen Adams Dec 2003

Locating Global Legacies In Tana Toraja, Indonesia, Kathleen Adams

Kathleen M. Adams

In 2001, the picturesque Toraja village of Ke' te' Kesu' was nominated for candidacy as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in the South Sulawesi highlands in Indonesia, this hamlet is home to rice farmers, wood carvers, tourist vendors, government workers and sporadically-visiting anthropologists. Drawing on long-term anthropological field research in the village, I suggest that while world heritage sites may entail what UNESCO terms 'genius loci', they are, rarely the unchanging embodiments of tradition they are imagined to be. The paper illustrates how heritage landscapes such as Ke' te' Kesu' are, to some extent, products of local responses and …

To Broadband Or Not To Broadband: The Relationship Between High-Speed Internet And Knowledge And Participation, Ann Williams Dec 2003

To Broadband Or Not To Broadband: The Relationship Between High-Speed Internet And Knowledge And Participation, Ann Williams

Ann E Williams

This study tests 2 competing theoretical models that attempt to understand the roles that broadband Internet plays in society. The linear model posits that the gains or harms introduced by the Internet via narrowband will further increase with the adoption of broadband. On the contrary, the differential gains model proposes that changes stemming from advances to different stages of Internet connection technology should be unique to each technological advance. Findings show that support for these models was contingent upon the domain that each criterion variable represents. For hard engagement, such as political discussion, hard knowledge, and civic participation, there was …

The Genesis Of Touristic Imagery: Politics And Poetics In The Creation Of A Remote Indonesian Island Destination, Kathleen Adams Dec 2003

The Genesis Of Touristic Imagery: Politics And Poetics In The Creation Of A Remote Indonesian Island Destination, Kathleen Adams

Kathleen M. Adams

Although the construction and amplification of touristically celebrated peoples’ Otherness on global mediascapes has been well documented, the genesis of touristic imagery in out of the way locales, where tourism is embryonic at best, has yet to be examined. This article explores the emergent construction of touristic imagery on the small, sporadically visited Eastern Indonesian island of Alor during the 1990s. In examining the ways in which competing images of Alorese people are sculpted by both insiders and outsiders, this article illustrates the politics and power dynamics embedded in the genesis of touristic imagery. Ultimately, I argue that even in …

Web-Based Trails And Cross-Campus Partnerships, Elizabeth Parang, Sharon Elteto, Maggie Mcvay-Lynch

Elizabeth Parang

At Portland State University, librarians work closely with faculty in cross-campus partnerships. Sharon Elteto presented examples of the Web-based trails created by librarians to aid faculty in integrating library resources into instruction, and other trails created by librarians working with faculty to aid students in conducting research. Maggie McVay-Lynch demonstrated and guided workshop participants in the use of four electronic communication tools.

Library Inventory Using Palm Pilot, Li Chen

Li Chen

Reducing user frustration over the failure to find a book in the library catalog, eliminating missing titles, and cleaning up other common database errors are tasks facing all libraries. Recently, the staff at Southern Polytechnic State University undertook a collection inventory using Palm Pilot technology. This article describes the one-year project and provides a detailed discussion of the procedures and equipment required to undertake this task. The experience at Southern Polytechnic State University suggests that library inventory is feasible and manageable.

Predictors Of Principals' Perceptions Of School Resource Officer Effectiveness In Kentucky, David May, Stephen Fessel, Shannon Means Dec 2003

Predictors Of Principals' Perceptions Of School Resource Officer Effectiveness In Kentucky, David May, Stephen Fessel, Shannon Means

David May

In recent years, many states have increased the presence of law enforcement at schools in response to a perception that schools have become unsafe places for children. The data regarding the impact of school resource officers (SROs) on school safety are limited, however. Using survey data collected from 128 principals, we examine the impact of SROs on perceptions of school safety among school administrators in Kentucky. Results indicate that most principals in Kentucky feel that SROs provide a valuable addition to school safety in their schools; however, the results also reveal the importance of communication between principals, SR Os, and …

Conflicting Allegiances: The Church Based University Within A Liberal Democratic Society, Michael Budde Dec 2003

Conflicting Allegiances: The Church Based University Within A Liberal Democratic Society, Michael Budde

Michael Budde

Michael L. Budde and John Wright's (editors) Conflicting Allegiances: The Church-Based University in a Liberal Democratic Society is the result of a conference of Christian scholars held in March 2002 at Point Loma Nazarene University (CA). At the request of Point Loma professor John Wright, Christian scholars from various traditions, academic institutions, and disciplines met on the Point Loma campus to discuss the relationship the Church shares with Christian institutions of higher education. Several scholars who contributed essays to this volume are members of the Ekklesia Project-a group seeking to invite "all Christians and churches to reclaim their vocation to …

The Economic Ascent Of China And The Potential For Restructuring The Capitalist World-Economy, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker Dec 2003

The Economic Ascent Of China And The Potential For Restructuring The Capitalist World-Economy, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker

Paul Ciccantell

The economic ascent of China in the past

two decades is the most dramatic change in

the capitalist world-economy of this period.

Analyses focus on changes in government

control of the economy, the availability of low

cost workers for export production, the historical

characteristics of Chinese economy

and society, and the role of the Chinese government

as a developmental state. All highlight

key parts of China’s economic ascent, but

none addresses what we argue will be the critical

component of future sustained economic

ascent, if it is to take place in China: the role

of raw materials and transport industries …
