Pissing On Demand : Workplace Drug Testing And The Rise Of The Detox Industry, Kenneth Tunnell
Pissing On Demand : Workplace Drug Testing And The Rise Of The Detox Industry, Kenneth Tunnell
Kenneth Tunnell
Drug testing has become the norm in many workplaces. In order to get a job, potential employees are required to provide their urine for testing. Pissing on Demandexamines this phenomenon along with the resulting rise of the anti-drug testing movement, or the "detox industry," that works to beat these tests. Strategies include over-the-counter products like "body flushers" that sound innocent but are really designed to mask the presence of illegal drugs to kits advertised in pro-drug publications like High Timesthat make no bones about their real purpose. The first expose of the detox industry in all its manifestations, this book …

Shoshone-Paiute “Pakkiata” In The Great Basin, Robert Mccarl

Ranching is a rich part of Shoshone-Paiute culture and tradition, yet the tribes' contributions to the economic development of Southeast Idaho and Northern Nevada have been largely overlooked through history.

Locomotion Induced By Non-Contingent Intracranial Electrical Stimulation: Dopamine Dependence And General Characteristics, James Dougan, John Martin, Qun Wu, Laura Stanisz, Scott Martyn, Sandra Rokosik, Paul Garris, Valeri Farmer-Dougan
James Dougan
Intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) is induced by delivery of electrical stimulation contingent upon a response such as bar pressing. This procedure has been widely used to investigate the brain reward system. Recent investigations, however, have noted that non-contingent electrical stimulation, also called experimenter applied stimulation (EAS), produces a unique set of locomotion behaviors that appear to be related to ICSS, and that these behaviors resemble locomotion similar to those elicited by dopamine enhancing drugs. However, little is known about the general characteristics of EAS-induced locomotion. While ICSS appears to be robust, long lasting, and highly rewarding in that the rat will …

‘That’S Why I Do It’: Flow And Efl Teachers’ Practices, Christine Tardy
‘That’S Why I Do It’: Flow And Efl Teachers’ Practices, Christine Tardy
Christine M. Tardy
Csikszentmihalyi's (1997) concept of flow describes a mental state resulting from peak experiences in which the level of challenge is high, but manageable given a person's skills. Because flow occurs at peak moments, these moments can motivate teachers, possibly shaping their classroom practices and giving them insight into their teaching beliefs. This exploratory interview study examines ten EFL teachers' flow experiences at work, and considers their implications for teacher education. The teachers all reported experiencing flow, and key categories relating to its occurrence were derived from their descriptions. Based on this study, we suggest that the concept of flow provides …

In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker
In The Name Of The Nation: Reflections On Nationalism And Patriotism, Rogers Brubaker
Rogers Brubaker
Treating nationhood as a political claim rather than an ethnocultural fact, this paper asks how “nation” works as a category of practice, a political idiom, a claim. What does it mean to speak “in the name of the nation”? And how should one assess the practice of doing so? Taking issue with the widely held view that “nation” is an anachronistic and indefensible or at least deeply suspect category, the paper sketches a qualified defence of inclusive forms of nationalism and patriotism in the contemporary American context, arguing that they can help develop more robust forms of citizenship, provide support …

The Genetic Basis Of Substance Abuse: Mediating Effects Of Sensation Seeking, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon
The Genetic Basis Of Substance Abuse: Mediating Effects Of Sensation Seeking, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon
Andrew M. Johnson
Most modern theories of personality are structured hierarchically, with broad higher-order dimensions predicting narrower trait-level variables. This approach is necessarily reductionist, proposing to summarize the majority of trait-specific variability with a smaller number of larger dimensions. Not surprisingly, therefore, significant research has been directed to determining what might be considered to be the most basic dimensions of personality—both with regards to the identification of how many factors are needed to describe personality, and what these factors might be called (Costa & McCrae 1992a; [29] and [30]; Tupes & Christal 1992; Zuckerman 1992; [121] and [122]. While these omnibus factors of …

Dancing With Entropy: Form Attributes, Children, And Representation, Jodi Kearns, Brian O'Connor
Jodi Kearns, PhD
This study explores the use of the information theory entropy equation in representations of videos for children. The calculated rates of information in the videos are calibrated to the corresponding perceived rates of information as elicited from the 12 seven- to ten-year-old girls who were shown video documents. Entropy measures are calculated for several video elements: set time, set incidence, verbal time, verbal incidence, set constraint, nonverbal dependence, and character appearance. As hypothesized, mechanically calculated entropy measure (CEM) was found to be sufficiently similar to perceived entropy measure (PEM) made by children so that they can be used as useful …

Dr. Treena Orchard
This paper discusses the results of two ethnographic studies with female sex workers in rural areas of Karnataka and Rajasthan, India. In particular, we focus on women whose socio-economic status, and religious and occupational practices, are part of sex work systems that have historical precedents such that they can be termed “traditional” sex workers. The approach taken in the ethnographic work was informed by current critical approaches in medical anthropology and public health. The paper argues that in the context of an expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic in rural areas of India, understanding the historical and structural factors that operate to perpetuate …
