Locomotion Induced By Non-Contingent Intracranial Stimulation:, James Dougan, Valeri Farmer-Dougan, Sandra Rokosik, Julie Lewis, Paul Garris
James Dougan
Non-contingent experimenter-applied stimulation (nEAS) to the ventral mesencephalon, unlike contingent intracranial selfstimulation (ICSS), elicits high rates of general locomotion. This locomotion may be due to the nature of the presentation of stimulation, in that nEAS is non-contingent, while ICSS depends on a specific and focused response (e.g., bar pressing). Psychomotor stimulants also elicit high amounts of general locomotion, with the locomotion attributed to increased dopamine release. Interestingly, dopamine release decreases or is absent with repeated ICSS, but not nEAS. This suggests that the locomotion elicited by nEAS may be the result of DA release similar to that observed with psychomotor …

The African Human Security Initiative (AHSI) is a network of seven African non-governmental research organisations that have come together to measure the performance of key African governments in promoting human security. The project is inspired by a wish to contribute to the ambitions of the New Economic Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). Whereas the APRM process has defined a comprehensive set of objectives, standards, criteria and indicators that cover four broad areas, AHSI only engages with one of the four, namely issues of political governance in so far as these relate to human …

Desire And Sacrifice: Seeking Compliance In Designated Driver Talk, Kathleen Valde, Kristine Fitch
Kristine Muñoz
Media campaigns introduced the term designated driver to United States discourse in an effort to persuade people to not drink and drive. This study explores implementation of the media campaign's objective in social interactions. We describe cultural premises related to drinking and driving, facework issues in designated driver talk, and relational resources relevant to designating a driver. Although people routinely attempt to designate a driver, interpretations of the term often diverge from the goal of eliminating drunk driving. The findings emphasize that designated driver talk is constructed through interaction sequences, and that problematic issues around face threats and cultural assumptions …

Public Commons Of Geographic Data: Research And Development Challenges, Harlan Onsrud, Gilberto Camara, James Campbell, Narindi Sharad Chakravarthy

Across the globe individuals and organizations are creating geographic data work products with little ability to efficiently or effectively make known and share those digital products with others. This article outlines a conceptual model and the accompanying research challenges for providing easy legal and technological mechanisms by which any creator might affirmatively and permanently mark and make accessible a geographic dataset such that the world knows where the dataset came from and that the data is available for use without the law assuming that the user must first acquire permission.

Americans And Genetically Modified Food: Knowledge, Opinion And Interest In 2004., William Hallman, W. Hebden, Cara Cuite, Helen Aquino, John Lang

This report presents the results from the third in a series of studies examining public perception of genetically modified (GM) food in the United States. All three studies were based on survey results of separate, nationally representative samples of approximately 1,200 Americans taken in 2001, 2003, and 2004. While the survey instrument on which the current report is based maintained many of the same measures of awareness and attitude as its two predecessors, it also included several new queries that assess the ability of respondents to recall specific news stories related to GM food, their interest in the topic, and …

Imperfect Competition And Total Factor Productivity Growth, Azzeddine Azzam, Elena Lopez, Rigoberto Lopez
Azzeddine Azzam
This article examines the role of imperfect competition in determining total factor productivity growth (TFPG) by bringing together a New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) model and the TFPG model of Good, Nadiri and Sickles (1999). Application of the integrated model to 1973-1992 data from 29 food processing industries revealed that, overall, changes in markups, economies of scale, and demand growth contributed positively to TFPG while the disembodied technical change was a negative contributor. Furthermore, the factors underlying the TFPG estimates are interactive and their net effects are starkly different from the conventional Solow (1957) residual TFPG measures, underscoring the need …

Sex Difference In Brain Nerve Conduction Velocity In Normal Humans, T. Reed, Philip Vernon, Andrew Johnson
Sex Difference In Brain Nerve Conduction Velocity In Normal Humans, T. Reed, Philip Vernon, Andrew Johnson
Andrew M. Johnson
Nerve conduction velocity (NCV), the speed at which impulses travel along nerves, has been extensively determined in human peripheral nerves because of its clinical utility. In contrast, almost no studies have been made of human brain NCV. We determined brain NCVs in the visual nerve pathway for 185 male and 200 female university students ages 18-25 years. In each of three independent test conditions, we found that the mean NCV of male students is about 4% faster than in females (P < or = 0.0001 for each condition). These male students also have a shorter reaction time in each of seven …

Out Of Touch Or On The Money: Do The Clinical Objectives Of Addiction Treatment Coincide With Economic Evaluation Results?, Michael French, Clara Dismuke, Helena Salome, Mark Foss, Chris Scott, Michael Dennis
Michael T. French
Previous economic studies have examined the association between substance abuse treatment and reduced costs to society, but it remains uncertain whether the economic measures used in cost and benefit-cost analyses of treatment programs correspond in direction and magnitude with clinical outcomes. In response to this uncertainty, the present study analyzed a longitudinal data set of addiction treatment clients to determine the statistical agreement between clinical and economic outcomes over time. Data were collected from 1,326 clients in the Chicago cohort of the Persistent Effects of Treatment Study. These individuals were interviewed at baseline as well as at 6-, 24-, 36-, …

Presidential Traits And Job Approval: Some Aggregate-Level Evidence., Brian Newman
Presidential Traits And Job Approval: Some Aggregate-Level Evidence., Brian Newman
Brian Newman
In a previous article in this journal, Cohen (2001) introduced time series measures of public perceptions of Bill Clinton's personal characteristics. Here, I explore the political impact of these perceptions, asking whether they affect the public's evaluations of presidential job performance. I find that they do, adding aggregate-level support to existing individual-level evidence of the importance of character assessments. Finding a connection between character perceptions and job approval in the aggregate time series context helps answer questions previous studies leave unresolved, with significant implications for our understanding of presidential approval and presidential politics more generally. Evaluation In Latin America And The Caribbean: An Overview Of Recent Developments, Thomas Chianca, Brandon Youker
Brandon W. Youker Ph.D
In the past ten years, evaluation, as a professional field, has undergone significant development in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Four considerations provide clear evidence of such development: (1) establishment of professional evaluation organizations; (2) intensified dissemination of ideas and use of professional evaluation in the three key societal sectors: government, private, and philanthropic; (3) increased number of evaluation-related publications; and (4) growing establishment of short-term and graduate-level training programs in evaluation.
Information Studies Without Information, Jonathan Furner
Information Studies Without Information, Jonathan Furner

In philosophy of language, the phenomena fundamental to human communication are routinely modeled in ways that do not require commitment to a concept of "information" separate from those of "data," "meaning," "communication," "knowledge," and "relevance" (inter alia). A taxonomy of conceptions of information may be developed that relies on commonly drawn philosophical distinctions (between linguistic, mental, and physical entities, between objects and events, and between particulars and universals); in such a taxonomy, no category requires the label "information" in order to be differentiated from others. It is suggested that a conception of information-as-relevance is currently the most productive of advances …

Evidence suggests that patients diagnosed with osteoporosis are often undertreated. One potential solution to undertreatment is to enhance patient involvement in their osteoporosis care (a.k.a. patient activation) by having the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) center directly provide patients with their test results and educational material. However, little is known about patient interest in such an intervention. Consecutive patients presenting to an academic medical center DXA scanning unit were given a questionnaire to assess their preferences for being informed of their test results and interest in receiving their results plus educational material by mail from the testing center. Two hundred and …
