Intermittent Leave And Reduced Schedule Leave Under The Family And Medical Leave Act, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center

Memos and Fact Sheets

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) permits workers who meet certain conditions to take up to 12 weeks per year of unpaid leave for medical or family care reasons. This memorandum discusses the statutes, legislative history and regulations pertinent to intermittent and reduced schedule leave, as well as select case law.

To give workers not just the time but also the flexibility to balance the demands of work and family, the FMLA allows workers to take leave on an intermittent basis (e.g., a few hours per week to attend a standing medical appointment) or on a reduced …

Notice, Designation And Substitution Of Leave Requirements Under The Family And Medical Leave Act, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center Jan 2005

Notice, Designation And Substitution Of Leave Requirements Under The Family And Medical Leave Act, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center

Memos and Fact Sheets

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) imposes notice obligations on both employers and employees. Employees must give their employer notice of their need for leave by providing an FMLA-qualifying reason for leave. Employees are not, however, required to use the words “FMLA” when asking for leave. Employees must also tell their employer if they wish to substitute paid leave for unpaid FMLA leave. Finally, employees must provide their employer with two-days’ notice of their plans to return to work following leave.

Employers initially must give employees notice of their FMLA rights. Once an employee has requested leave, …

Observations And Ratings Of Preschool Children’S Social Behavior: Issues Of Representativeness And Validity, Brian Mckevitt, Stephen N. Elliott Jan 2005

Observations And Ratings Of Preschool Children’S Social Behavior: Issues Of Representativeness And Validity, Brian Mckevitt, Stephen N. Elliott

Psychology Faculty Publications

Data were gathered from videotaped recordings of two preschool children engaged in unstructured free play over 12 days each. Observers coded behavior from the videotapes and completed a behavior rating scale for each child after every two observation sessions. Teachers also completed two behavior rating scales per child. Results indicated that at least three 30-min observation sessions were required to reliably represent a child’s overall behavior. Moderate correlations were obtained when observations were compared with teachers’ and observers’ own ratings, indicating the behavior rating scale did an adequate job of reflecting actual observed behavior. The implications of these results for …

The Reflection Of Karst In The Online Mirror: A Survey Within Scientific Databases, 1960-2005, Lee J. Florea, Beth Fratesi, Todd A. Chavez

Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications

The field of cave and karst science is served by a literature that is dispersed across far-flung topical journals, government publications, and club newsletters. As part of an inter-institutional project to globalize karst information (KIP, the Karst Information Portal), the USF Library undertook a structured battery of literature searches to map the domain of karst literature. The study used 4,300 individual searches and four literature databases: GeoRef, BIOSIS, Anthropology Plus, and GPO Access. The searches were based on a list of 632 terms including 321 karst-related keywords culled from three leading encyclopedias and glossaries of cave and karst science. An …

In Vivo Neurophysiological Recordings From Geniculate Ganglia: Taste Response Properties Of Individual Greater Superficial Petrosal And Chorda Tympani Neurones, Suzanne I. Sollars, David L. Hill Jan 2005

In Vivo Neurophysiological Recordings From Geniculate Ganglia: Taste Response Properties Of Individual Greater Superficial Petrosal And Chorda Tympani Neurones, Suzanne I. Sollars, David L. Hill

Psychology Faculty Publications

Coding of gustatory information is complex and unique among sensory systems; information is received by multiple receptor populations located throughout the oral cavity and carried to a single central relay by four separate nerves. The geniculate ganglion is the location of the somata of two of these nerves, the greater superficial petrosal (GSP) and the chorda tympani (CT). The GSP innervates taste buds on the palate and the CT innervates taste buds on the anterior tongue. To obtain requisite taste response profiles of GSP neurones, we recorded neurophysiological responses to taste stimuli of individual geniculate ganglion neurones in vivo in …
