Moments In Time: Metacognition, Trust And Outcomes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2004

Moments In Time: Metacognition, Trust And Outcomes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

This research tested the relationships between turning points, cognitive and affective trust, and negotiation outcomes. After completing a simulated negotiation, participants identified turning points from videotape. Turning points were then classified as substantive (interest, offer), characterization (positive, negative), or procedural (positive, negative). Pre-negotiation affective trust predicted subsequent turning points whereas pre-negotiation cognitive trust did not, suggesting that different cues influence the two types of trust. Post-negotiation cognitive trust was increased by the occurrence of interest, positive characterization, and positive procedural turning points and decreased by negative characterization turning points. Affective trust was increased by positive procedural turning points. Finally, interest …

Unequal Access To University Places : Revisiting Entry To Tertiary Education In Victoria, Daniel Edwards, Bob Birrell, T Smith Dec 2004

Unequal Access To University Places : Revisiting Entry To Tertiary Education In Victoria, Daniel Edwards, Bob Birrell, T Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

Access to university is becoming increasingly important as a determinant of occupational outcomes for young people. If there is to be genuine educational opportunity, then all young people in Victoria with the requisite talent should have an equal chance to compete for a university place. The findings of this report show that this is not the case currently. This report explores changes in the outcomes of Victorian Year 12 completers between 1993 and 2003. It is based on unpublished tertiary applicant data for all Victorian Year 12 VTAC applicants. The findings show that there has been a growing divergence in …

A Prospect Theory Analysis Of California’S Initiatives In Implementation Of The Zev Mandate, Sarmistha Majumdar Dec 2004

A Prospect Theory Analysis Of California’S Initiatives In Implementation Of The Zev Mandate, Sarmistha Majumdar

Sarmistha R Majumdar

In 1990, the state of California passed the pioneering mandate on zero emission vehicles (ZEV). This technology-forcing regulation is aimed at improvement of air quality and protection of public health from the adverse effects of air pollutants from automobiles. Facing severe opposition from the auto industry, the mandate has been revised a number of times, most recently in 2003, whereby the requirement for ZEVs have been made to align with the pace of technology development. Review of strategies used in implementation of the mandate has revealed greater emphasis on the economic incentives for rather than on environmental merits of ZEVs. …

The Structure Of Affect, Ulrich Schimmack, Stephen Crites Dec 2004

The Structure Of Affect, Ulrich Schimmack, Stephen Crites

Stephen L Crites Jr.

We reviewed the literature on affect, with a special emphasis on affective experience. We proposed a taxonomy of affective experience that distinguishes types, qualities, and aspects of affective experience. Different types of affective experience have different origins and have different consequences for the formation and change of attitudes. Emotions and sensory affects are more likely to have lasting effects on attitudes than moods. A salient distinction between qualities of affective experience is valence (pleasant vs. unpleasant). Recent evidence of mixed feelings suggests that pleasure and displeasure are distinct affective qualities. One important avenue for future research is relating mixed affective …

Final Days: Japanese Culture And Choice At The End Of Life, Susan Long Dec 2004

Final Days: Japanese Culture And Choice At The End Of Life, Susan Long

Susan O Long

In postindustrial societies, people must consciously define their individuality through the choices they make. Recently, death has become yet another realm of personal choice, making a "good death" one in which we die in our "own way." Does culture matter in these decisions? Final Days represents a new perspective on end-of-life decision-making, arguing that culture does make a difference but not as a checklist of customs or as the source of a moral code. Grounded in rich ethnographic data, the book offers a superb examination of how policy and meaning frame the choices Japanese make about how to die. As …

Social-Cognitive And Behavioral Attributes Of Aggressive Victims Of Bullying, Robin Toblin, David Schwartz, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Tania Abou-Ezzeddinea Dec 2004

Social-Cognitive And Behavioral Attributes Of Aggressive Victims Of Bullying, Robin Toblin, David Schwartz, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Tania Abou-Ezzeddinea

Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman

This study examined the social–cognitive and behavioral attributes of children who are concurrently aggressive and victimized by their peers. The characteristics of these “aggressive victims” were examined in comparison to bullies, passive victims, and normative comparison children. The sample included 240 urban Los Angeles elementary school children (mean age = 9.5 years), who completed a series of self-report inventories, a social–cognitive interview, and a peer nomination inventory. Ratings of behavioral adjustment were obtained from teachers and academic functioning was obtained through a review of school records. Subgroup comparisons indicated that aggressive victims were characterized by impairments in self-regulation as well …

Investigating The Effects Of Communication Problems On Caregiver Burden, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Hummert, R. Montgomery Dec 2004

Investigating The Effects Of Communication Problems On Caregiver Burden, Marie Savundranayagam, M. Hummert, R. Montgomery

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Objectives. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between communication problems associated with dementia and caregiver burden, within the context of problem behaviors and cognitive and functional abilities of the care recipient.

Methods. A scale on communication problems associated with dementia was developed and administered to 89 family caregivers. Participants also completed measures of care-recipient cognitive and functional status, problem behavior, and caregiver burden (demand, stress, and objective burden).

Results. Analyses using structural equation modeling showed that care-recipient cognitive and functional status indirectly predicted problem behaviors via communication problems. The status indicators also directly predicted demand burden. …

Relative Deprivation, Poor Health Habits, And Mortality, Christine Eibner, William Evans Dec 2004

Relative Deprivation, Poor Health Habits, And Mortality, Christine Eibner, William Evans

Christine Eibner

Using individual-level data on males from the 1988–91 National Health Interview Survey Multiple Cause of Death Files, we examine the impact of relative deprivation within a reference group on health. We define reference groups using combinations of state, race, education, and age. High relative deprivation in the sense of Yitzhaki is associated with a higher probability of death, worse self-reported health, higher self-reported limitations, higher body mass index, and an increased probability of taking health risks.

The Narrative And Ludic Nexus In Computer Games: Diverse Worlds Ii, Jeffrey Brand, Scott Knight Dec 2004

The Narrative And Ludic Nexus In Computer Games: Diverse Worlds Ii, Jeffrey Brand, Scott Knight

Jeffrey Brand

To examine relationships between narratological and ludological elements in computer games, we undertook an empirical study of 80 contemporary titles. We drew inspiration from Jenkins’ 2004 paper on dimensions of narrative architecture and Aarseth, Smedstad and Sunnanå’s (2003) paper on a typology of ludological factors in games. Although these two groups of concepts have not been fully explicated, we defined them in concrete terms, citing example game titles. We intersected six groups of narratological factors with seven groups of ludological factors and present the data in this paper. Of the four dimensions of narrative architecture, evoked was most problematic and …

Extending Spatial Hot Spot Detection Techniques To Temporal Dimensions, Sungsoon Hwang Dec 2004

Extending Spatial Hot Spot Detection Techniques To Temporal Dimensions, Sungsoon Hwang

Sungsoon Hwang

This paper presents how hot spot detection methods can be extended to allow for temporal dimensions. Major concerns are how temporal dimension is incorporated into the framework of point pattern analysis, while maintaining the capability of multi-scale analysis. The study elaborates on expanding the scope of (space) K function in order to count time in the analysis. With the explicit treatment of time as well as space, K function falls into three category depending on the way space and time are controlled; (1) space K function, (2) time K function, (3) space-time K function. Space K function is equivalent to …

“It’S Like A Story”: Rhetorical Knowledge Development In Advanced Academic Literacy, Christine Tardy Dec 2004

“It’S Like A Story”: Rhetorical Knowledge Development In Advanced Academic Literacy, Christine Tardy

Christine M. Tardy

In the academic ranks of schooling, writing tasks move gradually from a focus on the transmission of knowledge to the transformation of knowledge. As a more complex writing task, knowledge-transforming requires writers to engage in the rhetorical act of persuading readers of their work's value, significance, and credibility. At the postgraduate level, writers may be wrestling with these issues for the first time, often discovering this more occluded rhetorical dimension only after they have become somewhat more comfortable with issues of generic form or subject-matter content. This paper explores the nature and role of rhetorical knowledge in advanced academic literacy …

Behavioral Contrast In A Group Foraging Paradigm, James Dougan, Valeri Farmer-Dougan Dec 2004

Behavioral Contrast In A Group Foraging Paradigm, James Dougan, Valeri Farmer-Dougan

James Dougan

Two experiments examined multiple schedule behavioral contrast in a group foraging paradigm. Groups of five rats foraged simultaneously in a large open field apparatus with two feeding stations. Food pellets were delivered at each of the feeding stations on multiple Variable Time schedules. As predicted by both the matching law and the ideal free distribution, the relative distribution of behavior between the two feeding stations roughly matched the relative rate of food delivery at the feeding stations. These differences were reflected in both the behavior of individual animals and in the behavior of the group. Positive behavioral contrast was found …

Nature, Raw Materials And Political Economy, Paul Ciccantell, David Smith, Gay Seidman

Paul Ciccantell

At the beginning of the 21st century, nations, economies and people around the world confront tremendous environmental challenges. Conflicts in oil-producing areas threaten production and increase prices at the same time that many argue that global oil supplies have begun a long term decline. Access to water drives growing numbers of social and military conflicts. International efforts to address global warming falter as major polluting nations withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol. Deforestation in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, Africa and the Amazon threaten to change global weather patterns and increase poverty in many of the world=s poorest nations. Even the …
