Who Does The Public Trust? The Case Of Genetically Modified Food In The United States, John Lang, William Hallman Dec 2004

Who Does The Public Trust? The Case Of Genetically Modified Food In The United States, John Lang, William Hallman

John T. Lang

Trust is important for the perception of many types of risk, including those relating to genetically modified (GM) food. Who the public trusts in any given circumstance, however, is not well understood. In this study of public trust regarding GM food, an exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation reveals public classification of three common institutional types—evaluators, watchdogs, and merchants. The structure of relationships among these stakeholders can act to enable or constrain public support for this new technology. Evaluators—scientists, universities, and medical professionals—are the most trusted. Watchdogs—consumer advocacy organizations, environmental organizations, and media sources—are moderately trusted. Merchants—grocers and grocery stores, …

Technological Advances In Cancer And Future Spending By The Elderly, Jayanta Bhattacharya, Baoping Shang, Catherine Su, Dana Goldman Dec 2004

Technological Advances In Cancer And Future Spending By The Elderly, Jayanta Bhattacharya, Baoping Shang, Catherine Su, Dana Goldman

Baoping Shang

This paper forecasts the consequences of scientific progress in cancer for total Medicare spending between 2005 and 2030. Because technological advance is uncertain, widely varying scenarios are modeled. A baseline scenario assumes that year 2000 technology stays frozen. A second scenario incorporates recent cancer treatment advances and their attendant discomfort. Optimistic scenarios analyzed include the discovery of an inexpensive cure, a vaccine that prevents cancer, and vastly improved screening techniques. Applying the Future Elderly Model, we find that no scenario holds major promise for guaranteeing the future financial health of Medicare.

The Mythology Of Crime And Criminal Justice, Gary Potter, Victor Kappeler, Mark Blumberg Dec 2004

The Mythology Of Crime And Criminal Justice, Gary Potter, Victor Kappeler, Mark Blumberg

Gary W. Potter

Now in its fourth edition, this widely used and superior alternative to traditional criminal justice books continues both effectively and clearly to debunk myths cited in the popular literature regarding the problems of criminality in the U.S. It serves as a solid foundation for readers to probe beneath popular notions of crime, criminals, and crime control. Each well-written chapter provides a distinct avenue for exploring misconceptions about specific crimes or particular aspects of the system. Kappeler and Potter’s provocative examination of the realities of crime and justice is a must read for anyone serious about crime, criminal justice, or criminology. …

Talking Politics And Engaging Politics: An Examination Of The Interactive Relationships Between Structural Features Of Political Talk And Discussion Engagement, Ann Williams Dec 2004

Talking Politics And Engaging Politics: An Examination Of The Interactive Relationships Between Structural Features Of Political Talk And Discussion Engagement, Ann Williams

Ann E Williams

This study takes a process-oriented approach to understand the current status of political discussion research and identifies discussion engagement—discussion attention and integrative discussion—as an unexplored but important facet of political discussion. As a block, these two variables of discussion engagement independently accounted for significant variance in two criterion variables of political engagement, political knowledge and political participation, after controlling for not only a host of demographic, attitudinal, and media use variables but also three most researched structural features of political discussion—network size, discussion frequency, and network heterogeneity. In addition, the study analyzes the interplay between various attributes of political discussion …
