Supporting The Inclusion Of A Student With Asperger Syndrome: A Case Study Using Conjoint Behavioural Consultation And Self-Management, Lee Wilkinson Dec 2004

Supporting The Inclusion Of A Student With Asperger Syndrome: A Case Study Using Conjoint Behavioural Consultation And Self-Management, Lee Wilkinson

Lee A Wilkinson, PhD

Conjoint behavioural consultation (CBC) is an indirect form of service delivery that combines the resources of home and school to meet the academic, social and behavioural needs of children. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the utility of CBC as a service delivery model for supporting the inclusion of a student with Asperger syndrome in a mainstream setting. A case study methodology was employed to assess the effectiveness of an evidence-based intervention (self-management) delivered in the context of the CBC model. Results indicated a significant increase in teacher ratings of behavioural control (on-task and compliant behaviour) from baseline …

Sovereignty, Democracy, And Global Civil Society, Elisabeth Friedman, Kathryn Hochstetler, Ann Marie Clark Dec 2004

Sovereignty, Democracy, And Global Civil Society, Elisabeth Friedman, Kathryn Hochstetler, Ann Marie Clark

Ann Marie Clark

Sovereignty, Democracy, and Global Civil Society explores the growing power of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) by analyzing a microcosm of contemporary global state-society relations at UN World Conferences. The intense interactions between states and NGOs at conferences on the environment, human rights, women's issues, and other topics confirm the emergence of a new transnational democratic sphere of activity. Employing both regional and global case studies, the book charts noticeable growth in the ability of NGOs to build networks among themselves and effect change within UN processes. Using a multidimensional understanding of state sovereignty, the authors find that states use sovereignty to …

'Like Butter Scraped Over Too Much Bread': Animal Protection Policy In Mexico, Emma Norman, Norma Contreras Hernández Dec 2004

'Like Butter Scraped Over Too Much Bread': Animal Protection Policy In Mexico, Emma Norman, Norma Contreras Hernández

Emma R. Norman

Over the past fifteen years Mexico has developed a string of comprehensive animal protection regulations designed to address the serious problems that affect both wild and domestic animals in the territory. Yet for all their detailed coherence and despite serious government efforts, the regulations continue to lack effective enforcement and authorities are increasingly overstretched. This study discusses three key areas that obstruct the effective implementation of Mexican animal protection policy, but where advances could be feasibly initiated. The first concerns deficiencies at the political level. The second addresses the awkward relation between government and civil society on the issue. The …

First Phase Information Literacy On A Fourth Generation Website, Shawn Apostel, Moe Folk Dec 2004

First Phase Information Literacy On A Fourth Generation Website, Shawn Apostel, Moe Folk

Shawn Apostel

Prevailing advice to students on how to evaluate websites (look at the URL, date of publication, webmaster, etc.) is adapted from how we evaluate books. This is an example of First Phase Information Literacy, a term we have adapted from Lankshear and Knobel's discussion of Bezos's distinction between the "first phase of automation" and the second phase. The way we as teachers have approached the evaluation of credible websites is still in the "first phase" of information literacy. In other words, we have merely adapted the methodologies we have used for books so that they apply to websites. However, as …

Fordism And Postfordism, Wendy Wiedenhoft Murphy Dec 2004

Fordism And Postfordism, Wendy Wiedenhoft Murphy

Wendy A. Wiedenhoft Murphy

The Encyclopedia of Social Theory contains over 500 entries varying from concise definitions of key terms and short biographies of key theorists to comprehensive surveys of leading concepts, debates, themes and schools. The object of the Encyclopedia has been to give thorough coverage of the central topics in theoretical sociology as well as terms and concepts in the methodology and philosophy of social science. Although 106 theorists are given entries, the emphasis of the work is on the elucidation of ideas rather than intellectual biography. The Encyclopedia covers the leading contemporary domains of debate on social theory and the classical …

Globalization And The Race For Resources, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell Dec 2004

Globalization And The Race For Resources, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

Globalization is a self-reinforcing, ever-expanding cycle of interdependent economies of scale in production and transport attempting to resolve the diseconomies of space they create. In Globalization and the Race for Resources, Stephen G. Bunker and Paul Ciccantell integrate ecological and economic explanations of extraction and production into a comparative history of six hundred years of globalization that explores the sequence of trade dominant nations—Portugal, Holland, Britain, the United States, and Japan—and shows how each devised technologies, social and financial institutions, and markets that enhanced their particular locational advantages within this cycle.

Globalization of the world economy results from the progressive …

Exposure Utilization And Completion Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Ptsd In A “Realworld” Clinical Practice, Claudia Zayfert, Jason Deviva, Carolyn Becker, Julie Pike, Karen Gillock, Sarah Hayes Dec 2004

Exposure Utilization And Completion Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Ptsd In A “Realworld” Clinical Practice, Claudia Zayfert, Jason Deviva, Carolyn Becker, Julie Pike, Karen Gillock, Sarah Hayes

Carolyn Becker

This study assessed rates of imaginal exposure therapy (ET) utilization and completion of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a clinical setting and examined variables associated with CBT completion. Using a clinical definition, the completion rate of CBT was markedly lower than rates reported in randomized trials. CBT completion was inversely related to severity of overall pretreatment measures of PTSD, avoidance, hyperarousal, depression, impaired social functioning, and borderline personality disorder. Regression yielded avoidance and depression as unique predictors of completion. Most dropouts occurred before starting imaginal ET, although initiating ET was associated with greater likelihood of …

Quantitative Coding Negotiation Processes, Laurie Weingart, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2004

Quantitative Coding Negotiation Processes, Laurie Weingart, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

The examination of negotiation processes is seen by many researchers as an insurmountable task largely because the required methods are unfamiliar and labor-intensive. In this article, we shed light on a fundamental step in studying negotiation processes, the quantitative coding of data. Relying on videotapes as the primary source of data, we review the steps required to extract usable quantitative data and the lessons we’ve learned in doing so in our own research. We review our experience working with one large negotiation dataset, Towers Market II, to illustrate two steps within the larger research process: developing a coding scheme and …

Mythology Of Crime And Criminal Justice, Victor Kappeler, Gary Potter, Mark Blumberg Dec 2004

Mythology Of Crime And Criminal Justice, Victor Kappeler, Gary Potter, Mark Blumberg

Vic Kappeler

Now in its fourth edition, this widely used and superior alternative to traditional criminal justice books continues both effectively and clearly to debunk myths cited in the popular literature regarding the problems of criminality in the U.S. It serves as a solid foundation for readers to probe beneath popular notions of crime, criminals, and crime control. Each well-written chapter provides a distinct avenue for exploring misconceptions about specific crimes or particular aspects of the system. Kappeler and Potter’s provocative examination of the realities of crime and justice is a must read for anyone serious about crime, criminal justice, or criminology.

Toward Information Superiority: The Contribution Of Operational Net Assessment, Peter Wielhouwer Dec 2004

Toward Information Superiority: The Contribution Of Operational Net Assessment, Peter Wielhouwer

Peter W. Wielhouwer

Dr. Wielhouwer notes that achieving decision superiority hinges on information superiority. He introduces the concept of operational net assessment, as well as its process and product, identifying them as enablers of effects-based planning and effects-based operations. The synergy of these tools provides joint force commanders extensive information in advance of a crisis, leading to actionable knowledge and decision superiority that facilitate the effective application of diplomatic, economic, informational, and military power.

The Acute Phase Protein Haptoglobin Is A Mammalian Extracellular Chaperone With An Action Similar To Clusterin, Justin Yerbury, Mark S Rybchyn, Simon B Easterbrook-Smith, C. Henriques, Mark Wilson Dec 2004

The Acute Phase Protein Haptoglobin Is A Mammalian Extracellular Chaperone With An Action Similar To Clusterin, Justin Yerbury, Mark S Rybchyn, Simon B Easterbrook-Smith, C. Henriques, Mark Wilson

Mark R Wilson

Haptoglobin (Hp) is an acidic glycoprotein present in most body fluids of humans and other mammals. Although the functions of Hp are not yet fully understood, the available evidence indicates that it is likely to play an important role in suppressing inflammatory responses. Some earlier work suggested that Hp might be a newly identified member of a small group of extracellular chaperones found at significant levels in human body fluids. Previously, the only well-characterized member of this group was clusterin, which shares functional similarities with the small heat-shock proteins. We report here that Hp specifically inhibited the precipitation of a …
