This guide identifies major concerns and involves interested parties in thoughtful consideration and discussion of challenges and opportunities embedded in managerial and administrative practice. By talking about the management of information places and with managers and mangers-to-be, authors Curran and Miller provide a more thorough and realistic outlook on the managerial experience. The authors assert that:
· Information agencies of all stripes share a common purpose
· The act of deciding is the primary administrative/managerial responsibility …

Trade Policies Of The Former Centrally Planned Economies, James Toole, James Lutz
Trade Policies Of The Former Centrally Planned Economies, James Toole, James Lutz
James M Lutz
Since the end of Communist rule, the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have been forced to restructure their formerly centrally planned economies. Among the dilemmas they have faced is how open they should be to international trade. Using multiple regression, the openness of these economies to trade is empirically determined while controlling for the effects of both population and wealth. Residuals from the regression equations are then examined in order to identify how much more or less open to trade each country has been. Analysis of the residuals for six distinct regions of the former Communist …

This article suggests differential acceptance and approval of genetic modification involving plant or animal genes. The results can contribute to our understanding of GM food acceptance and be used to derive marketing strategies and in policy formulation. Similar to previous studies, this article suggests that demographic, socio-economic, consumer value attributes, and trust in key stakeholders help drive acceptance of genetic modification. In general, the public is more approving of plant-based GM than animal-based GM. Furthermore, the results of this survey suggest that a better understanding of biotechnology, trust in the GM regulatory framework, and biotechnology corporations’ motives are critical for …

An Evaluation Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation As A Model For Supporting Students With Emotional And Behavioral Difficulties In Mainstream Classrooms, Lee Wilkinson
Lee A Wilkinson, PhD
Conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) is an indirect form of service delivery in which parents and teachers collaborate to meet the academic, social, and behavioral needs of children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate CBC as a method of providing behavioral support for two students with emotional and behavioral difficulties (EBD) in mainstream classrooms. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants’ design and a follow-up phase were employed to assess an evidence-based intervention (self-management) delivered in the context of the CBC model. Results indicated a significant increase in teacher ratings of behavioral control from baseline to treatment. Positive treatment effects …

The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker
The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker
Rogers Brubaker
As the use of ‘diaspora’ has proliferated in the last decade, its meaning has been stretched in various directions. This article traces the dispersion of the term in semantic, conceptual and disciplinary space; analyses three core elements that continue to be understood as constitutive of diaspora; assesses claims made by theorists of diaspora about a radical shift in perspective and a fundamental change in the social world; and proposes to treat diaspora not as a bounded entity but as an idiom, stance andclaim.

The Encyclopedia of Social Theory contains over 500 entries varying from concise definitions of key terms and short biographies of key theorists to comprehensive surveys of leading concepts, debates, themes and schools. The object of the Encyclopedia has been to give thorough coverage of the central topics in theoretical sociology as well as terms and concepts in the methodology and philosophy of social science. Although 106 theorists are given entries, the emphasis of the work is on the elucidation of ideas rather than intellectual biography. The Encyclopedia covers the leading contemporary domains of debate on social theory and the classical …
Pathologies Of Accountability: Icann And The Challenge Of “Multiple Accountabilities Disorder”, Jonathan Koppell
Pathologies Of Accountability: Icann And The Challenge Of “Multiple Accountabilities Disorder”, Jonathan Koppell
Jonathan GS Koppell
Accountability is a core concept of public administration, yet disagreement about its meaning is masked by consensus on its importance and desirability. This article proposes a five-part typology of accountability conceptions. Transparency, liability, controllability, responsibility, and responsiveness are defined as distinct dimensions of accountability, providing an improvement on the current state of conceptual fuzziness. The typology provides a vocabulary for the core argument: that conflicting expectations borne of disparate conceptions of accountability undermine organizational effectiveness. This phenomenon—labeled multiple accountabilities disorder— is illustrated with a case study. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is a nascent organization charged …

Middle Power Statecraft: Indonesia, Malaysia And The Asia-Pacific, Jonathan Ping
Middle Power Statecraft: Indonesia, Malaysia And The Asia-Pacific, Jonathan Ping
Jonathan H. Ping
Jonathan Ping's volume establishes a unifying theory for the concept of middle power (MP). MPs are states which have an innate form of statecraft and perceived power as a result of their size. The book presents hybridization theory as a basis for analysis, policy development and prediction of MP statecraft and perceived power. A prerequisite to the founding of hybridization theory is the new statistical method of definition which identifies sixteen MPs of Asia and the Pacific.
The volume takes a comparative focus on Indonesia and Malaysia to inform and test hybridization theory, as well as to provide a historical …

Providing care and support to a relative or friend who has an illness, disease or disability is widely held to be a task which requires extensive emotional and physical resources and one which can place considerable strain on the carer. Over the last four decades a growing body of research has emerged, both in Australia and internationally, demonstrating the adverse physical, psychological, social and financial effects that caring can have on the well being of carers. Although the caring role has inherent emotional, physical, financial and social strains which place carers at risk for poor physical and psychological health outcomes, …

We Know They Are Smart, But Have They Learned Anything?: Strategies For Assessing Learning In Honors, Steffen Pope Wilson, Rose M. Perrine
Steffen Wilson
The independent assessment of student learning, or outcomes assessment, is a topic of national interest and one that is currently being addressed by many institutions of higher education. Honors programs, like all academic units, are being asked to create outcomes assessment programs. We provide here a brief history of outcomes assessment and an overview of the basic steps required for creating an outcomes assessment program. We then discuss suggestions for implementing outcomes assessment in honors.

Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton
Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton
Alan J. Christensen
Participants in the present study were 207 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who completed internal HLOC and depression measures at baseline and at an approximately 16-month follow-up period. Regression results indicated that after controlling for baseline level of depression, baseline internal HLOC was not a significant predictor of depression at follow-up. However, increases in internal HLOC over the 16-month follow-up were predictive of depression at follow-up. Furthermore, this relationship was qualified by an interaction between change in internal HLOC and disease progression. These results suggest that changes in internal HLOC over time may be a particularly important determinant of …

Restructuring Markets And Reorganizing Nature: The Political Economy And Ecology Of Japan’S Global Search For Raw Materials, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker
Paul Ciccantell
How did Japan rise to challenge U.S. economic supremacy? We argue that the foundation of Japan's rise from a defeated nation in 1945 to an economic powerhouse is the raw materials that Japanese firms have turned into cars, ships, consumer electronics, and of other industrial products. A small island nation that lacked adequate domestic supplies of virtually all the raw materials essential to industrial production became a world leader in the production of steel and of products which required millions of tons per year of raw materials. Japanese firms and the Japanese state turned an apparent material and economic disadvantage, …
