Values And Goal-Free Evaluation: A Case Study, Brandon Youker Dec 2004

Values And Goal-Free Evaluation: A Case Study, Brandon Youker

Brandon W. Youker Ph.D

How does a goal-free evaluator deal with values? Which values? Whose values? This presentation argues that the goal-free evaluator takes a consumerist perspective. Thus the evaluator's values are in serving the program's consumers and satisfying the consumers' needs.

Alcohol Consumption, Risk Of Injury, And High-Cost Medical Care, Michael French, Helena Salome, Helen Matzger, Constance Weisner Dec 2004

Alcohol Consumption, Risk Of Injury, And High-Cost Medical Care, Michael French, Helena Salome, Helen Matzger, Constance Weisner

Michael T. French

This study examined the effect of alcohol use on the probabilities of injury, inpatient hospital stay, and emergency department visit. Data were obtained from a sample of adults (N=1219) recruited from a Northern California county. Alcohol use measures included number of drinks, heavy drinking days, and an indicator variable for problem drinking. Models were estimated for men and women separately while controlling for confounders. Results indicate that most alcohol use measures were not significantly related to injury probability or medical care utilization. Among the exceptions, problem drinking was a significant positive predictor of any emergency department visit for both sexes. …

Taking American Race Relations On The Road...To Africa, Rebecca Gearhart Dec 2004

Taking American Race Relations On The Road...To Africa, Rebecca Gearhart

Rebecca Gearhart

I originally wrote this article in the summer of 2001, after returning from Kenya where I had spent the month of May with eighteen Illinois Wesleyan students enrolled in my travel course. Inspired by a series of articles devoted to study abroad programs in Africa (African Issues, volume XXVIII/1&2) in 2000, I hoped to contribute to the discussion by sharing the insights recorded in my students’ travelogues. Then the September 11th terrorist attacks occurred, and soon thereafter the U.S. Department of State issued travel warnings against travel to several African nations including Kenya, which has prevented me from …

Ngoma Memories: How Ritual Music And Dance Shaped The Northern Kenya Coast, Rebecca Gearhart Dec 2004

Ngoma Memories: How Ritual Music And Dance Shaped The Northern Kenya Coast, Rebecca Gearhart

Rebecca Gearhart

This essay integrates ethnographic data collected between Mombasa and the Lamu archipelago in Kenya into the growing body of scholarship on Swahili music and dance (ngoma) traditions. The analysis underscores how the Swahili have used ngoma events to stake claims to higher positions on the social ladder, negotiate difference, create socioeconomic security networks, establish and mark group identity, connect to the spirit world, and pass through various stages of the life cycle. Through a rich array of historical accounts by visitors to the coast, whose texts complement oral histories of coastal residents, the importance of ngoma in the Swahili-ization of …

The Relationship Between Pre-Employment Expectations, Experiences, And The Length Of Stay In Public Accounting, M. Padgett, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, S. Hughes, C. Born Dec 2004

The Relationship Between Pre-Employment Expectations, Experiences, And The Length Of Stay In Public Accounting, M. Padgett, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, S. Hughes, C. Born

Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde

This study examines the relationship between work-family conflict, employment expectations, and length of stay in public accounting. Length of stay is modeled as a function of demographic factors and job characteristics associated with work-family balance, measured in terms of the extent to which the employees' expectations matched their actual employment experiences. Results indicated that gender, the presence of children in the household, flexible schedules, and the presence of mentors were related to length of stay in public accounting.

Impact Of Nutrition Knowledge On Food Evaluations, Stephen Crites, Shelley Aikman Dec 2004

Impact Of Nutrition Knowledge On Food Evaluations, Stephen Crites, Shelley Aikman

Stephen L Crites Jr.

Objective: This study explored whether nutrition knowledge interacted with evaluations of a food’s healthiness to influence food attitudes (ie, global evaluations). Since attitudes guide behavior, understanding factors that impact food attitudes is one way to understand food selection and why factors such as nutrition knowledge have only a modest impact on food selection. We hypothesized that the relation between health evaluations and food attitudes would be stronger for people high in nutrition knowledge. We also explored the macronutrient composition of foods, and how it related to attitudes and health evaluations.

Design: Survey employing multilevel analyses to examine within- and between-subject …

Reformatting Preservation Departments: The Effect Of Digitization On Workload And Staff, Marie Kennedy Dec 2004

Reformatting Preservation Departments: The Effect Of Digitization On Workload And Staff, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

This study investigates whether digitization has affected the workload and staffing of preservation departments. Data from a survey of eighteen ARL libraries over five years were used to track the number of reformatting tasks completed and staffing trends in order to determine whether there is an evident effect from digitization. Analysis reveals that the number of items processed by preservation departments has increased by ten percent due to digital-reformatting tasks and without a corresponding increase in staffing. The shape of preservation departments is indeed shifting, and this trend should be followed closely over subsequent years.

Voice Recognition Technology: Has It Come Of Age?, Joseph Zumalt Dec 2004

Voice Recognition Technology: Has It Come Of Age?, Joseph Zumalt

Joseph R. Zumalt

Voice recognition software allows computer users to bypass their keyboards and use their voices to enter text. While the library literature is somewhat silent about voice recognition technology, the medical and legal communities have reported some success using it. Voice recognition software was tested for dictation accuracy and usability within an agriculture library at the University of Illinois. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.0 was found to be more accurate than speech recognition within Microsoft Office 2003. Helpful Web sites and a short history regarding this breakthrough technology are included.
