Classical Conditioning Of Red-Backed Salamanders, Plethodon Cinereus, Scott Kight Dec 2004

Classical Conditioning Of Red-Backed Salamanders, Plethodon Cinereus, Scott Kight

Scott Kight

We examined associative learning as it relates to the sensory ecology of the red-backed salamander, Plethodon cinereus, using a classical conditioning design to evaluate the response of salamanders to different kinds of stimuli.  Conditioned stimuli (CS) reflected visual, chemosensory, and mechanosensory modalities of P. cinereus, with brief exposures to (I) white light, (II) acetic acid fumes, (III) low-frequency sound, and (IV) low-frequency vibration.  In all experiments, a gentle mechanical stimulation of the tail served as the unconditioned stimulus (US), which consistently elicited movement of the head or body as the unconditioned response (UR).  For two days, the US …

A Longitudinal Study Of Chickering And Reisser’S Vectors: Exploring Gender Differences And Implications For Refining The Theory., John D. Foubert, Monica Nixon, Shamim Sisson, Amy B. Barners Dec 2004

A Longitudinal Study Of Chickering And Reisser’S Vectors: Exploring Gender Differences And Implications For Refining The Theory., John D. Foubert, Monica Nixon, Shamim Sisson, Amy B. Barners

John D. Foubert

A racially mixed random sample of 247 students at a midsized public university in the Southeast completed the Student Development Task and Lifestyle Inventory at the beginning of their first year, beginning of their sophomore year, and end of their senior year (Winston, Miller & Prince, 1987). Results showed partial support of Chickering and Reisser’s theory of development in that students progressed in their development along three measured vectors throughout their college career. Results contradicted the assumption that developing purpose is a vector experienced only toward the end of one’s college career. Important gender differences also emerged, particularly regarding issues …

The Capital Idea And The Scope Of Economics, Peter Lewin Dec 2004

The Capital Idea And The Scope Of Economics, Peter Lewin

Peter Lewin

This paper traces the idea of Capital from Adam Smith to modern times and shows how different conceptions of Capital give rise to different approaches to economics and the range of problems that can be investigated. A structural, as opposed to a stock, approach to Capital is shown to be more conducive to a studies of business institutions and practices, and to rules, institutions and standards in a changing world.

Focusing "Down Low": Bisexual Black Men, Hiv Risk And Heterosexual Transmission, Gregorio Millett, David Malebranche, Byron Mason, Pilgrim Spikes

David J Malebranche

Introduction: Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and women but who do not identify as gay or disclose their bisexual activities to main female partners, also known as men “on the down-low,” have been cited as the main reason for the increase in HIV infections in black women. Methods: Three online databases (PsychInfo, MEDLINE and AIDSLINE) were searched for scientific articles related to men on the down-low. A total of 24 articles and two conference abstracts were selected for review. Results: Data from existing studies of MSM reveal low agreement between professed sexual identity and corresponding sexual behavior …

Hegemony And Autonomy, Howard H. Lentner Dec 2004

Hegemony And Autonomy, Howard H. Lentner

Howard H. Lentner

This article analyzes the concept of hegemony and examines its relationship to power and autonomy. Refuting the conventional belief that it is ideology that distinguishes hegemony, the article argues that it is autonomy that constitutes the distinguishing characteristic. Although hegemons tend to evolve into imperialists, hegemony involves leadership of an alliance, not domination by coercion. It is impossible to conceptualize hegemony without also including autonomy. In this conceptualization, the primary source of autonomy lies in a specific hegemonic system of domination that itself embodies the notion of autonomy for both the polity and its citizenry, a limiting construction that hinders …

Racist Extremism In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde Dec 2004

Racist Extremism In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Based in part on the results of a unique, comparative research project, the aim of this article is threefold: (1) to provide a comparative summary of racist extremism in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE); (2) to compare the situation of racist extremism in CEE to that inWestern Europe; and (3) to come to some further insights about racist extremism in the region. It concludes, in contrast to many of the alarming statements on the topic, that CEE is neither a hotbed of racist extremism nor a safe haven for racist extremists. In fact, if one compares the state of racist …

What’S Left Of The Radical Left? The European Radical Left Since 1989: Decline And Mutation, Cas Mudde, Luke March Dec 2004

What’S Left Of The Radical Left? The European Radical Left Since 1989: Decline And Mutation, Cas Mudde, Luke March

Cas Mudde

We make a three-fold contribution to research on the European radical left. First, we will offer a clear and comprehensive definition of the term ‘radical left’. Second, we will look at the main developments within the European radical left as a whole, and not just at one sub-set of political parties. Third, we will take a pan-European perspective, focusing on both Eastern and Western Europe. The radical left in Europe post-1989 is both in decline and in mutation. Decline is evident in both the marginalization and moderation of Communist organizations (notably parties), a direct result of the fall of the …

Bowling Alone Revisited, Paul J. Rich Dec 2004

Bowling Alone Revisited, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

The controversy over American social capital that was fueled by Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone" work seems unlikely to abate any time soon. Whether civility and trust are as frayed and diminished as contended is surely an open question. But whatever one's position, the discussion has been good for political science and good for policy studies.

Income Redistribution From Social Security, Don Fullerton, Brent Mast Dec 2004

Income Redistribution From Social Security, Don Fullerton, Brent Mast

Don Fullerton

Social Security, in 1935, was intended to provide for elderly individuals without adequate sources of income. And it has a “progressive” benefit schedule that replaces a higher percentage of past earnings for those with low past earnings than for those with high past earnings. For both these reasons, the U.S. Social Security system was thought to redistribute income from rich to poor--until recently, that is. Several research teams recently developed data and models that show a more complete picture of how much the U.S. Social Security system actually redistributes income. It is important to know as much as possible about …

Second-Hand Choice: An Incapacitated Pregnant Woman's Constitutional Right To Choose Abortion, Jill W. Lens Dec 2004

Second-Hand Choice: An Incapacitated Pregnant Woman's Constitutional Right To Choose Abortion, Jill W. Lens

Jill Wieber Lens

Although the Supreme Court has recognized a woman's right to choose abortion, that right assumes that the woman is able to make such a meaningful choice. If incompetent, a court appoints a guardian for a pregnant woman, through which the incompetent woman is able to make decisions. Because the incompetent pregnant woman has a guardian, courts should not also appoint a guardian for the fetus. The appointment of a fetal guardian is unconstitutional because it infringes on the incapacitated woman's ability to exercise her constitutional right to choose abortion. Additionally, the appointment of a fetal guardian would interfere with the …

Nonprofits At The Crossroad: Embrace Change, Learn To Compete, Art Stewart

Art Stewart

The tide of continuous change brought on by the impact of a global marketplace is impacting the fundamental way we conduct our relationships, commerce, and civic engagement as well as the formation and implementation of our public policy, and the manner in which we define and exercise our belief systems. Competition is now essential to acquiring what we need on both a personal and communal basis. We compete in the way we relate to each other - vying for attention and engagement, loyalty and trust, and physical needs. We compete in our civic engagement - striving for numbers of supporters, …

Re-Claiming Authentic Leadership For Nonprofit Sustainability, Art Stewart Dec 2004

Re-Claiming Authentic Leadership For Nonprofit Sustainability, Art Stewart

Art Stewart

In the past few years, we have witnessed stunning examples of great - and greatly flawed - leadership that has contributed to a new norm of regulation and accountability, breached stakeholder trust, and dubious public confidence. No consensus is needed to acknowledge that the nonprofit sector has suffered from a lack of leadership, whether it is social service agencies, advocacy organizations, charities and foundations, philanthropic institutions or associations. Many top executives of nonprofit organizations have displayed consistent shortcomings in vision, courage, responsibility, and commitment. Still too, many others have exercised impressive perseverance in the name of service, education, and social …

Archetypal Energies And The Four Faces Of Romantic Relationships, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2004

Archetypal Energies And The Four Faces Of Romantic Relationships, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

All relationships are valuable learning experiences. They are mirrors to assist us in our various Earth lessons. As mirrors, relationships, particularly romantic or intimate relationships, reflect to a large extent energies that are going on inside of us. At much deeper levels, these energies are what I call our authentic Archetypal Energies. Over the years, I have come to recognize at least twenty-five of these primary Archetypal Energies, each with a unique function and purpose for our human experience. I use easily recognized terms to evoke a common sense of these energies. Love, for example, is one of these deeper …

Tattoos On Our Digital Skin: Anonymity, Privacy, And Accountability In Cyberspace, Sam Grey Dec 2004

Tattoos On Our Digital Skin: Anonymity, Privacy, And Accountability In Cyberspace, Sam Grey

Sam Grey

While it may be oddly flattering that Chapters, Amazon or HMV knew you would like the new Johnny Cash compilation album, you may be less than thrilled to discover that they also knew about your prescription drug addiction, your crabs, your bankruptcy, or your having skipped out on the rent one month back in 1993. When you add the possibility of your favourite e-retailer sharing your personal information- for a profit- to the frank probability of their having known it in the first place, what you initially found flattering may begin to appear more offensive and ominous. Simply put, there …

Play To Win! Using Games In Library Instruction To Enhance Student Learning, Tammy Sugarman, Guy Leach Dec 2004

Play To Win! Using Games In Library Instruction To Enhance Student Learning, Tammy Sugarman, Guy Leach

Tammy Sugarman

Research has shown that educational games can have positive impacts on student learning and motivation. The success of a game played in a library instruction class depends on the type of game selected, the development of learning outcomes, and the flexibility of the librarian during class. This article explains the benefits to students and librarians of using games, discusses the development and use of a Jeopardy-style game, and provides practical tips for librarians interested in developing and incorporating games into one-time library instruction sessions.

Syllabus - "Selling Sex: Feminist Discourses On The Sex Work Industry" (Cornell College, Women's Studies Course), Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Mandy (Amanda) Swygart-Hobaugh

We examined competing feminist discourses regarding women’s involvement/portrayal in the sex work industry. Grounded in feminist theoretical and methodological perspectives, our discussions were guided by the following considerations: (1) What are the competing feminist discourses regarding sex work, and what are the similarities/differences between these discourses? (2) How are these competing discourses deployed in a global context, and what issues/concerns arise within a global consideration of sex work? (3) Is sex work inherently degrading/objectifying to women, or can one allow that it may also be sexually liberating? (4) How might one’s social situatedness (i.e. social class, race/ethnicity, gender, education, non-sex …

Specialization And Non-Renewable Resources: Ricardo Meets Ricardo, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Darrell Krulce, James Roumasset

Ujjayant Chakravorty

The one-demand Hotelling model fails to explain the observed specialization of nonrenewable resources. We develop a model with multiple demands and resources to show that specialization of resources according to demand is driven by Ricardian comparative advantage while the order of resource use over time is determined by Ricardian absolute advantage. An abundant resource with absolute advantage in all demands must be initially employed in all demands. When each resource has an absolute advantage in some demand, no resource may be used exclusively. The two-by-two model is characterized. Resource and demand-specific taxes are shown to have significant substitution effects.

Objects, Properties, And Functions, Robert J. Stainton Dec 2004

Objects, Properties, And Functions, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

Objects are contrasted with properties, by means of examples, non-linguistic hallmarks, and linguistic correspondents. Hard cases of objects which are in some respects akin to properties are considered, but the idea that properties simply are another kind of object is rejected. Finally, properties are seen to be interchangeable with a certain kind of function.
