In real application scenarios, input data and knowledge is often vague. Likewise, it is often the case that exact reasoning over data is impossible due to complex dependencies between input data and target outputs. For practical applications, however, good approximations often suffice, and efficient calculation of an approximate answer is often preferable over complex processing which may take a long time to come up with an exact answer. Fuzzy logic supports both features by providing fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy IF-THEN rule bases. Recruitment and retention of student employees are important considerations for any recreational sports department, large or small, because student employees impact both the quantity and quality of programs and services. This article proposes a strategy for establishing partnerships with academic departments to aid in the recruitment and retention of student employees. These partnerships benefit students, the recreational sports department, academic departments, and university student retention efforts. Following a description of this strategy is an example of a partnership that has been successfully established at one Midwestern university.

This article examines methodological issues related to the measurement of implicit motives in culturally divergent samples. Implicit motives are seen as basic needs shared by all human beings. However, cross-cultural comparisons are very restricted because many cross-cultural studies on implicit motives with non- Western cultures developed and discussed culture-inherent stimuli. The aim of the study here was to search for a culture-independent set of picture stimuli measuring two basic motives (affiliation and power motive) in three different cultures. This chapter examines the various criticisms of NGOs and calls attention to both the validity of these criticisms as well as contradictions and inconsistencies. Critics of NGOs can be found across the political spectrum, ranging from rightists who object to NGOs in principle to leftists who criticize NGOs for their failures to advance a progressive agenda or for deferring to government preferences. Despite their ideological differences and ultimate objectives, however, critics are remarkably similar in terms of many of their main complaints about NGOs. Even library school students groan when they are first told to learn the complex commands of an "old-fashioned" power system like Dialog. They expect systems where the complexity is behind the scenes and everything is done for them. Despite these new attitudes, commands and complex syntax are still needed in online searching, even on the web.

This thesis aims to study Iran's foreign policy behaviour in the period between 1979 and 1988; with a primary emphasis on Imam Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran during the same period. The thesis will seek to identify Khomeini's Operational Code (a sub-domain of the belief system and an often neglected variable in foreign policy analysis) and link it to the actual foreign policy behaviour. Quantitative and qualitative content analysis techniques will be utilized to help identity and analyze Khomeini's Operational Code. The 2005 Revised Overall Economic Development Plan (OEDP) prepared by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) for the Omaha Economic Development Corporation (OEDC) replaces the original OEDP first prepared in 1978. 本港人口正急速老化，65歲以上的老年人口將在未來三十年佔總人口的四分之一。如何確保長者的生活質素，以及提升護老者的照顧能力，將會是未來香港社會的挑戰。過去十年，各政府部門、醫管局、大學、專業團體和社會服務機構，都致力發展和研究有關老年健康的課題，藉以提升長者的生理、認知、心理和社交健康。近年，很多從西方引入的治療研究，亦被嘗試應用在不同類型的疾病上，例如：懷緬治療、多感觀治療、音樂治療和認知行為治療等，但應用在華人身上的成效，則有待更多的驗證。

華人社會一向重視家庭和親屬關係，以及勤奮工作的文化。大部份長者的教育水平偏低，年青時都只着重工作，甚少娛樂；跳舞、上戲院、閱讀、攝影只是少部份長者的嗜好，普羅大眾的娱樂文化主要是往茶樓品茗、打麻雀、打天九、看電視和賭博等等。麻雀治療是從長者過往較多接觸的活動中，發展出來的一套具有本土特色而非使用藥物的治療方法，旨意在融入長者的日常生活中，達到既提供娛樂活動，亦同時提升長者的身體、認知、心理和社交功能。

傳統的中國文化，一直流傳著所謂「打麻雀能醫百病」、「打麻雀是一種心靈寄託」、「打麻雀可以使人忘記煩惱、病痛」等說法。而每逢節日和家人團聚，“打幾圈”麻雀已成為一種很普及的娛樂活動。最近，有些報導以及一些醫生均指出打麻雀有助老年人避免患上心理疾病，以及減輕老年痴呆症患者的退化症狀。然而，上述的觀點至今仍未有科學方面的引證。

在2004年，仁濟醫院社會服務部與嶺南大學亞太老年學研究中心,採用科學化的研究方法，於仁濟醫院社會服務部轄下八間老人院舍中，選取121位患有輕度及中度認知能力受損的長者進行麻雀治療的研究。研究的目的是希望引證麻雀治療能否改善患有老年痴呆症長者的身體、認知、心理和社交功能，並找出一套具策劃及有效執行的麻崔治療模式。透過研究的經驗和成果，將麻雀活動發展成為一稱具本土特色的健康治療工具。我們盼望藉此實務手冊，為年長一聚提供多一個非藥物的治療選擇；同時亦希望本手冊能夠發揮拋縛引玉的效果，使各界人士能夠繼續推廣和實行麻雀治療，造福廣大的社群。

Since the enactment of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, extensive expert testimony has justified use of the modified t statistic (Brownie et al., 1990) for performing two-sample hypothesis tests comparing Bell companies’ CLEC and ILEC performance measurement data (known as parity testing). However, Opdyke (Telecommunications Policy, 2004) demonstrated this statistic to be potentially manipulable and to have literally zero power to detect inferior CLEC service provision under a wide range of relevant data conditions. When a medical intervention prevents a dichotomous outcome, the size of its effect is often estimated with the prevented fraction. Some interventions may reduce the severity of an outcome without entirely preventing it. To quantify the effect of a severity-moderating intervention, a measure termed the mitigated fraction (MF) is proposed. MF has broad applicability, because it measures the overlap of two empirical distributions based on their stochastic ordering. It is also useful in the specific context of medical interventions, because it shares certain structural and functional features with the prevented fraction. A general simulation procedure is described to validate model fitting algorithms for complex likelihood functions that are utilized in periodic cancer screening trials. Although screening programs have existed for a few decades, there are still many unsolved problems, such as how age or hormone affects the screening sensitivity, the sojourn time in the preclinical state, and the transition probability from diseasefree state to the preclinical state. Simulations are needed to check reliability or validity of the likelihood function combined with the associated effect functions. In some areas, e.g., statistical genetics, it is common to apply a maximum test, where the maximum of several competing test statistics is used as a new statistic, and the permutation distribution of the maximum is used for inference. Here, it is shown that maximum tests are special cases of adaptive permutation tests. The 30-year old idea of adaptive statistical tests is more flexible than previously thought when permutation tests are used, and the selector statistic is calculated for every permutation. Large Sample And Bootstrap Intervals For The Gamma Scale Parameter Based On Grouped Data, Ayman Baklizi, Amjad Al-Nasser

Interval estimation of the scale parameter of the gamma distribution using grouped data is considered in this article. Exact intervals do not exist and approximate intervals are needed Recently, Chen and Mi (2001) proposed alternative approximate intervals. In this article, some bootstrap and jackknife type intervals are proposed. The performance of these intervals is investigated and compared. The results show that some of the suggested intervals have a satisfactory statistical performance in situations where the sample size is small with heavy proportion of censoring.

Assumed that the distribution of the lifetime of any unit follows a lognormal distribution with parameters μ and σ . Also, assume that the relationship between μ and the stress level V is given by the power rule model. Several types of bootstrap intervals of the parameters were studied and their performance was studied using simulations and compared in term of attainment of the nominal confidence level, symmetry of lower and upper error rates and the expected width. Conclusions and recommendations are given.

Restricted Quasi-Independent Model Resolves Paradoxical Behaviors Of Cohen’S Kappa, Vicki Stover Hertzberg, Frank Xu, Michael Haber

Cohen’s kappa, an index of inter-rater agreement, behaves paradoxically in 2×2 tables. λ_A is derived, an index from the restricted quasi-independent model for 2×2 tables. Simulation studies are used to demonstrate λ_A has superior performance compared to Scott’s pi. Moreover, λ_A does not show paradoxical behavior for 2×2 tables.

A Comparison Of The Spearman-Brown And Flanagan-Rulon Formulas For Split Half Reliability Under Various Variance Parameter Conditions, David A. Walker

Differences between the Spearman-Brown and Flanagan-Rulon formulas are examined when the variance parameters for two halves of a test had the following ratios: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 and also had a correlation between the two halves of a test at 1.00, .95, .90, .80, .70, .60, .50, .40, .30, .20, .10, .05. It was found that use of the Spearman-Brown formula to estimate the population ρ when the ratio between the standard deviations on two halves of a test is disparate, or beyond .9 to 1.1, was not warranted.
