Emotional Intelligence In Academic Library Leadership, Rosita E. Hopper Dec 2005

Emotional Intelligence In Academic Library Leadership, Rosita E. Hopper

Library Staff Publications

Recent research by Peter Hernon and Nancy Rossiter (in press) analyzed the extent to which desired traits listed in current job advertisements for library directors correspond with the five components of emotional intelligence (EI) identified by psychologist Daniel Goleman (i.e. self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill.) The research of Hernon and Rossiter also examined the level of importance that current library directors themselves ascribed to those traits found in the ads. This study quantifies the extent to which the ninety-six traits listed by Hernon and Rossiter are likewise described as desirable by the authors represented in five published collections …

Working Paper No. 30, On The Origins Of Laissez-Faire, Thomas Breaden Dec 2005

Working Paper No. 30, On The Origins Of Laissez-Faire, Thomas Breaden

Working Papers in Economics

This paper traces laissez-faire back to its French roots, and in particular, to its origins as a political philosophy evoking an economic approach. Related to his visit to France in the 1760s and his personal contacts, we suggest that Adam Smith serves as the link between selected French thinkers and what after Smith’s Inquiry would be widely accepted as a quintessentially Anglo-Saxon tradition in economics. Exploring doctrine, we offer linkages between F. Quesnay, A. Turgot, J.J. Rousseau, and Smith’s ideas. Similarities in Smith’s understanding and the French exponents regarding economic activity vis-a- vis a public sector are presented, along with …

Motivation And Transactional, Charismatic, And Transformational Leadership: A Test Of Antecedents, John E. Barbuto Jr.

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Relationships between leaders' motivation and their use of charismatic, transactional, and/or transformational leadership were examined in this study. One hundred eighty-six leaders and 759 direct reports from a variety of organizations were sampled. Leaders were administered the Motivation Sources Inventory (MSI) while followers reported leaders' full range leadership behaviors using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-rater version). Leaders were also administered the self-rating version of the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-rater version). The Motivation Sources Inventory subscales subsequently significantly correlated with leader self-reports of inspirational motivation, idealized influence (behavior) and individualized consideration (range, r = .10 to .29), as well as with …

Google And The Print Library Initiative: To Scan Or Not To Scan, Peter A. Zuber

Faculty Publications

Already a strong presence on the web, Google has been of particular interest to those in the library industry, raising concerns over future roles that libraries and librarians would play in a Google-dominated, information-seeking world. Noted not only for its search capability, Google had previously demonstrated its desire to expand its role as an information provider with such tools as Google Earth (a remarkable 3-dimensional viewing tool of the planet), Google Scholar (a search tool designed to return only peer reviewed scholarly content) and Google News and Images (capable of searching thousands of news stories and retrieving a myriad of …

How Coming To Terms With Difficulties In The Family Of Origin Positively Influences Adult Children's Relationship/Marital Quality, Vjollca Kadi Martinson Dec 2005

How Coming To Terms With Difficulties In The Family Of Origin Positively Influences Adult Children's Relationship/Marital Quality, Vjollca Kadi Martinson

Theses and Dissertations

Decades of research have shown that family-of-origin experiences are generally important predictors of individuals' later relationship/marital quality. On average, the healthier these experiences are, the healthier adult children's relationships and marriages tend to be. The focus of this study was to investigate how coming to terms with difficulties experienced in the family of origin may enhance adult children's ability to create high quality relationships and marriages. The study employed a sample of 6423 U.S. couples, 18-45 years old, who were dating, cohabitating, engaged or married. This study showed that individuals in couple relationships who reported healthier family-of-origin experiences and those …
