Selective Screening Of Rail Passengers, Mti 06-07, Brian M. Jenkins, Bruce Robert Butterworth Nov 2005

Selective Screening Of Rail Passengers, Mti 06-07, Brian M. Jenkins, Bruce Robert Butterworth

Mineta Transportation Institute

The threat of another major terrorist attack in the United States remains high, with the greatest danger coming from local extremists inspired by events in the Middle East. Although the United States removed the Taliban government and destroyed al Qaeda’s training camps in Afghanistan, events in Europe and elsewhere have shown that the terrorist network leadership remains determined to carry out further attacks and is capable of doing so. Therefore, the United States must systematically conduct research on terrorist strikes against transportation targets to distill lessons learned and determine the best practices for deterrence, response, and recovery. Those best practices …

Statistical Model And Estimation Of The Optimum Price For A Chain Of Price Setting Firms, Chengjie Xiong, Kejun Zhu Nov 2005

Statistical Model And Estimation Of The Optimum Price For A Chain Of Price Setting Firms, Chengjie Xiong, Kejun Zhu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A stochastic approach is used to model the economics of a chain of price setting firms. It is assumed that these firms have fixed capacities in their products, but random demands for their products. The optimum price, the optimum revenue, and the expected marginal revenue at a given price are investigated. The method of maximum likelihood is used to provide both point and confidence interval estimates. The coverage probabilities of confidence interval estimates based on a simulation study are presented.

Inferences About The Components Of A Generalized Additive Model, Rand R. Wilcox Nov 2005

Inferences About The Components Of A Generalized Additive Model, Rand R. Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A method for making inferences about the components of a generalized additive model is described. It is found that a variation of the method, based on means, performs well in simulations. Unlike many other inferential methods, switching from a mean to a 20% trimmed mean was found to offer little or no advantage in terms of both power and controlling the probability of a Type I error.

The Individuals Control Chart In Case Of Non-Normality, BetüL Kan, Berna Yazici Nov 2005

The Individuals Control Chart In Case Of Non-Normality, BetüL Kan, Berna Yazici

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This article examines the effects of non-normality as measured by skewness and provides an alternative method of designing individuals control chart with non-normal distributions. A skewness correction method for constructing the individuals control chart is provided. An example of thickness of biscuit process is presented to illustrate the individuals control chart limits.

In Situ Examination Of Boldness–Shyness Traits In The Tropical Poeciliid, Brachyraphis Episcopi, Culum Brown, Felicity Jones, Victoria Braithwaite

Sentience Collection

Explaining consistent variation in the behaviour of individuals in terms of personality differences is one of the cornerstones of understanding human behaviour but is seldom discussed in behavioural ecology for fear of invoking anthropomorphism. Recently, however, interest has begun to focus on identifying personality traits in animals and examining their possible evolutionary consequences. One major axis used to define personality traits is the shyness–boldness continuum. We examined boldness in an in situ experiment using fish from eight populations of the poeciliid Brachyraphis episcopi (also referred to as Brachyrhaphis episcopi). Fish from high- and low-predation regions within four streams that run …

Tragedies Call For Time To Put Life In Balance, Carla Kimbrough Nov 2005

Tragedies Call For Time To Put Life In Balance, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Today your life could change dramatically.
• Your spouse or significant other decides life without you is better than life with you.
• Your child, your parent or perhaps even you discover a terminal illness has invaded your body.
• You lose your job where you've worked a minimum of 50 hours per week for the last five, 10. 15 or 20 years.
• You lose everything that is precious to you: your home, your possessions, your mementos. All you have left are your life and the clothes on your back.
Chances are any of the above scenarios would rock …

Optimal Adaptation In Autonomic Web Processes With Inter-Service Dependencies, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth Nov 2005

Optimal Adaptation In Autonomic Web Processes With Inter-Service Dependencies, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service dependencies. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by the manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier.

Mine Action: Lessons And Challenges, Gichd Nov 2005

Mine Action: Lessons And Challenges, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine Action: Lessons and Challenges represents the views of selected experts as to what some of the key lessons have been, and what challenges remain for the future.

Following an Executive Summary of its main conclusions and findings, this work is laid out in two parts. Part I looks at the core activities — the “pillars” — of mine action: advocacy, victim assistance, mine risk education, demining (survey, marking and clearance of mines and unexploded ordnance) and stockpile destruction. Part II looks at key management issues, specifically, programme coordination and management, information management and capacity development. This work concludes with …

Regional Cooperation In Mine Action: The Case Of South-Eastern Europe, Gichd Nov 2005

Regional Cooperation In Mine Action: The Case Of South-Eastern Europe, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action has tended to develop on a national basis. However, the experience of South-Eastern Europe has shown that a broader, regional approach can bring greater effectiveness and efficiency to mine action projects and programmes.

The main achievements of this regional approach have been to lower costs for demining (especially through international competitive bidding) while seeking to promote a high quality of work, in particular through the quality management processes of the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF). The ITF also believes that its work has improved donor strategies for the region as well as priority …

The Challenge Of Terror: A Traveling Essay, John Paul Lederach Nov 2005

The Challenge Of Terror: A Traveling Essay, John Paul Lederach

Peace and Conflict Studies

So here I am, a week late arriving home, stuck between Colombia, Guatemala and Harrisonburg when our world changed. The images flash even in my sleep. The heart of America ripped. Though natural, the cry for revenge and the call for the unleashing of the first war of this century, prolonged or not, seems more connected to social and psychological processes of finding a way to release deep emotional anguish, a sense of powerlessness, and our collective loss than it does as a plan of action seeking to redress the injustice, promote change and prevent it from ever happening again. …

Detection Of Landmines By Dogs: Environmental And Behavioural Determinants, Ian Mclean, Rebecca Sargisson, Ian Mansfield Nov 2005

Detection Of Landmines By Dogs: Environmental And Behavioural Determinants, Ian Mclean, Rebecca Sargisson, Ian Mansfield

Global CWD Repository

The overall aim of the study was to explore the effects of environmental variables on mine detection by dogs. Operational mine detection dogs were used to search for mines in a test mine field, near Kabul, Afghanistan. The key variable used in the analysis was whether a mine was found or missed by the dog. Measured during the study were: o Weather patterns through the year of the study. Weather variables (temperature, wind, humidity) at the time the dog crossed the mine. Dog behaviour. Vegetation over the mine. A soil sample was taken from over the mine and from a …
