Family-Of-Origin Quality, Regulation Of Negative Affect, Marital Stability, And Couple Drinking Patterns, Heidi M. Brunner Jul 2006

Family-Of-Origin Quality, Regulation Of Negative Affect, Marital Stability, And Couple Drinking Patterns, Heidi M. Brunner

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of family-of-origin quality, adult regulation of negative affect, and marital stability with the extent to which couples report they drink similarly and the extent to which they report that the husband drinks more than the wife. It was hypothesized that these two types of couple drinking patterns would be impacted by each individual spouse's context as well as by the interaction of those contexts. A national sample of 1498 couples or 2996 individuals (1498 wives and 1498 husbands married to each other) participated in this study. This study sought …

The Central European Initiative : An Approach To Regional Stabilization And Democratic Consolidation, Astrid Bettina Boening

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how multilateral institutions can contribute to democratization and regional stability. It is a case study of the Central European Initiative (CEI), a regional intergovernmental organization founded by Italy and Austria in 1989 to undertake a regional integration process, and of its role in stabilizing post-communist democracies. Documents were collected at the CEI offices in Trieste, Italy, and interviews conducted with CEI officers, and data obtained from the websites of related organizations and of CEI member countries.

The thesis probes the relevance of concepts derived from theories of international regimes and social constructivism. It shows that the CEI …

Japanese Mothers' Parenting Styles With Preschool-Age Children, Ai Shibazaki Lau Jul 2006

Japanese Mothers' Parenting Styles With Preschool-Age Children, Ai Shibazaki Lau

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether Western typologies of parenting (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and psychological control) and their dimensions (e.g., connection, regulation, physical punishment, verbal hostility) can be measured in the context of Japanese parenting. Based on the literature review, it was hypothesized that these parenting constructs are measurable in Japan. The participants were 214 Japanese mothers of preschool-age children (101 boys and 113 girls) from several preschools in Kushiro-city, Japan. A series of two-group (boys and girls) Confirmatory Factor Analysis was carried out with Mplus statistical software to test the measurement models of authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, …

State Legislative Term Limits And The Law Of Unintended Consequences : An Examination Of Member Behavior, Power Structures, And Legislative Organization In Florida, Kathryn Andrews Depalo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The implementation of term limits on state legislators has provided a wealth of data for study. Florida, the second largest state in the Union with term limits, has not been comprehensively studied. This research examines the effects of term limits on electoral competition, member composition, legislator career paths, legislative leadership, and intra- and inter-governmental influences on Florida's legislature. This study looks at the Florida legislature from 1992 when term limits were enacted through 2004, three electoral cycles in which term limits have been in effect. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative data where appropriate. Electoral data is used to …

Changing Horses In Mid-Stream: A New Lms Plus Improved Teaching, Russ Pennell, Sandra Wills

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The University of Wollongong's recent implementation of a new Learning Management System has been accompanied by a two year process of interviews and consultation with committees, deans, managers, academics, students and support staff. This has resulted in a Strategic Plan for eLearning & eTeaching and an eTeaching Business Plan. These plans for institutional change were based on earlier studies of IT introduction in Higher Education contexts. Project development was overseen by a widely-representative committee, with major effort given to training and support of academics and students. In 2004 over 800 subject websites were in use each year. The new software …

Relationship Between Resident Workload And Self-Perceived Learning On Inpatient Medicine Wards: A Longitudinal Study, Elizabeth M. Haney, Christina Nicolaidis, Alan Hunter, Benjamin K. Chan, Thomas G. Cooney, Judith L. Bowen

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Despite recent residency workload and hour limitations, little research on the relationship between workload and learning has been done. We sought to define residents' perceptions of the optimal patient workload for learning, and to determine how certain variables contribute to those perceptions. Our hypothesis was that the relationship between perceived workload and learning has a maximum point (forming a parabolic curve): that either too many or too few patients results in sub-optimal learning.

Methods: Residents on inpatient services at two academic teaching hospitals reported their team and individual patient censuses, and rated their perception of their learning; the patient …

Rural Families Choose Home-Based Child Care For Their Preschool-Aged Children, Kristin Smith Jul 2006

Rural Families Choose Home-Based Child Care For Their Preschool-Aged Children, Kristin Smith

Carsey School of Public Policy

This policy brief examines who is taking care of preschoolers of employed mothers in rural America. While most rural families choose home-based child care (such as relatives or informal nonrelated care providers), formal care (such as in day care centers) has positive benefits to a child's development. The brief recommends that programs are needed that either make formal care more affordable and accessible in rural communities, or that train home-based care providers to provide quality care.

Ranking And Clustering Australian University Research Performance, 1998-2002, Abbas Valadkhani, A. C. Worthington Jul 2006

Ranking And Clustering Australian University Research Performance, 1998-2002, Abbas Valadkhani, A. C. Worthington

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper clusters and ranks the research performance of thirty-six Australian universities over the period 1998-2002. Research performance is measured according to audited numbers of PhD completions, publications and grants (in accordance with rules established by the Department of Education, Science and Training) and analysed in both total and per academic staff terms. Hierarchical cluster analysis supports a binary division between fifteen higher and twenty-two lower-performing universities, with the specification in per academic staff terms identifying the self-designated research intensive ‘Group of Seven’ (Go7) universities, plus several others in the better-performing group. Factor analysis indicates that the top-three research performers …

This accident classification is “Other” because there is not enough information to determine what was going on at the time. The primary cause of this accident is listed as “Other” because there is not enough information to determine any cause for the accident. The secondary cause is listed as a “Management control inadequacy” because the management of the demining group declined to make the accident details available. Although this is sometimes done to protect the Victims, in this case the Victims’ names were among the limited detail made available. It is possible that the managers have chosen to avoid transparency …

Exploring The Switching Costs-Behavioural Loyalty Relationship Amongst Dissatisfied Customers In The B2b Services Sector, Venkata K. Yanamandram, L. White Jul 2006

Exploring The Switching Costs-Behavioural Loyalty Relationship Amongst Dissatisfied Customers In The B2b Services Sector, Venkata K. Yanamandram, L. White

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a research model to explore the mediating effects of dependence and commitment on the relationship between switching costs and behavioural loyalty, and the moderating role of criticality of purchase in the relationship between dependence and commitment in the B2B services sector. While studies have recognised the mediating role of dependence and commitment on relational intentions, there is no research identified that investigates mediating or moderating roles under conditions of dissatisfaction in the B2B services sector. We attempt to fill this knowledge gap by contributing to a better understanding of how customer loyalty towards service providers is formed …

Simulation Framework As A Multi-User Environment For A Go*Team Game, J. Jagiello, M. Eronen, N. Tay, D. Hart, L. Warne, Helen M. Hasan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper describes the design and implementation of a computerized team version of the ancient strategy game of Go. The game is called Go*Team, and forms part of a research effort investigating how people and groups coordinate, cooperate and share information, especially in a military network-centric environment. Of particular interest in the research are human or group related factors that may impede or even prevent the successful achievement of such coordination, cooperation and information sharing despite the availability or presence of the technological capability to support it. Accordingly, Go*Team is designed to embed its players in an environment that involves …
