Early Predictors Of Sexual Behavior: Implications For Young Adolescents And Their Parents, Lisa D. Lieberman Jun 2006

Early Predictors Of Sexual Behavior: Implications For Young Adolescents And Their Parents, Lisa D. Lieberman

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

The study provides empirical evidence of the independent contribution of nonsexual romantic relationships in the seventh grade to the onset of sexual intercourse by the ninth grade for both males and females. In addition, it shows that among females, seventh graders in serious relationships with older teenagers—uniquely defined as those two or more years older—have an increased likelihood of sex in the ninth grade. Finally, the study demonstrates that seventh graders of both genders who have had serious romantic relationships were already significantly different in the sixth grade from those who have not: They had peers who were more accepting …

Fixing Fisa For Long War: Regulating Warrantless Surveillance In The Age Of Terrorism, Adam Burton Jun 2006

Fixing Fisa For Long War: Regulating Warrantless Surveillance In The Age Of Terrorism, Adam Burton

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The English poet W.H. Auden once claimed that “Peeping Toms are never praised, like novelists or bird watchers, for the keenness of their observations.” Perhaps Auden would have modified his maxim had he lived in the age of terrorism. A certain degree of government surveillance of even intimate communications is expected, encouraged, and indeed praised when the government’s efforts lead to the prevention of catastrophe. However, it is also expected that the government will minimize these intrusions, will conduct surveillance only on legitimate targets, and will follow the procedural safeguards that the representatives of the people have enacted in …

(Much) More On The Collateral Source Rule, David Schap, Andrew Feeley Jun 2006

(Much) More On The Collateral Source Rule, David Schap, Andrew Feeley

Economics Department Working Papers

The collateral source rule is a common law norm that permits recovery of accident-related damages from both the victim’s insurer and the injurer. Many jurisdictions have modified the rule through statutory reform during the last twenty-five years. Forensic economists in assessing damages need to be aware of the variations in the application of the rule in the jurisdictions in which they practice. The authors present a tabular summary of the statutory variations that exist in the collateral source rule across state jurisdictions and the detailed status of the statutory modifications to the rule for each state.

L’Inscription Du Corps Dans Quatre Romans Postcoloniaux D’Afrique, Augustine H. Asaah Jun 2006

L’Inscription Du Corps Dans Quatre Romans Postcoloniaux D’Afrique, Augustine H. Asaah

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

More and more, contemporary African literature dwells on the body —as the subject and object of desire, as a refuge and as a commodified and objectified victim. Using as reference points four novels —Calixthe Beyala’s C’est le soleil qui m’a brûlée and Femme nue, femme noire, Williams Sassine’s Mémoire d’une peau and Nimrod’s Les jambes d’Alice— all of which inscribe the body onto and into the text, this article seeks to analyse diverse manifestations of the textualized body. Works of alienation and dispossession, these four texts also focus on corporeal quests for equilibrium. The presence of the body in the …

Doublures, Restes Et Rapports : Les Corps Entre Méconnaissances Et Mises, Jean-Godefroy Bidima Jun 2006

Doublures, Restes Et Rapports : Les Corps Entre Méconnaissances Et Mises, Jean-Godefroy Bidima

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

If the body finds a place in our discourse, it is only to justify what we abhor and to provide us with alibis. However, some postcolonial discourses generate misunderstanding via two major omissions: on the one hand, they steer away from a critique of the political economy of the scholar’s own body and its relationship to economic power; on the other hand, they fail to explore what can be said about the body conceived as remains and as residue. One cannot properly conceive of the body as a substance but, rather, as a relation —a relation to what it is …

Femme Nue, Femme Noire : Tribulations D’Une Vénus, Lydie Moudileno Jun 2006

Femme Nue, Femme Noire : Tribulations D’Une Vénus, Lydie Moudileno

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article examines the return, in two contemporary novels, of the figure of the “naked black woman” as an emblematic site of difference. Two women of African origin take back this twice-appropriated figure and use it to question the ways in which the materiality of the body is again being written into contemporary postcolonial society. The aim of the essay is to underline the means and meaning deployed in these new appropriations of African icons, while pointing to some possible limits to the symbolic passage from the colonial imagination to a postcolonial one.

Les Enfants De La Guerre : Adolescence Et Violence Postcoloniale Chez Badjoko, Dongala, Kourouma Et Monénembo, Koffi Anyinefa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This essay deals with the representation of African child-soldiers in three novels and an autobiography. Why do children take part in African postcolonial civil wars? How are they portrayed? These children are not —as public opinion would often have it— only the victims of postcolonial violence, but are also agents of social change. Their violent involvement in political affairs constitutes the most radical form of their determination to be heard, and the most eloquent form of their protest against their precarious living conditions in a postcolonial Africa in crisis.

“The Times They Are A Changing” 1 : Undertaking Qualitative Research In Ambiguous, Conflictual, And Changing Contexts, Lea Kacen, Julia Chaitin Jun 2006

“The Times They Are A Changing” 1 : Undertaking Qualitative Research In Ambiguous, Conflictual, And Changing Contexts, Lea Kacen, Julia Chaitin

The Qualitative Report

This article explores qualitative research issues that arise when researchers engage in study within their own ambiguous, unstable, conflictual, and rapidly changing society. We explore the topics of the relationship between the researcher and the context, the difficulty in choosing relevant research quest ions under such conditions, and the relevance of generalizing or transferring findings from such contexts to other sites and populations. We present two research cases from the Israeli context: one that demonstrates an external conflict (between Israelis and Palestinians) and one that demonstrates an internal conflict (between Israelis and Israelis), analyzing them according to these three main …

The Photo Essay: A Visual Research Method For Educating Obstetricians And Other Health Care Professionals, Gwendolyn P. Quinn, Terrance L. Albrecht, Charles Mahan, Bethany A. Bell-Ellison, Tabia Henry Akintobi, Beth Reynolds, Delores Jeffers

The Qualitative Report

When it comes to issues related to low-income women seeking early, adequate, or continuous prenatal ca re, the public health and medical communities continue to tell women to take responsibility for their actions. Rarely are messages aimed at providers. To help physicians see how factors in their offices and clinics can affect service utilization, the photo essay, a visual qualitative research strategy was developed using low- income minority and disenfranchised women who had recently given birth or were near to giving birth. Eight photo essays were completed. Together, the narratives, in collaboration with the photos, provided an opportunity for physicians …

Narratives Of Developing Counsellors’ Preferred Theories Of Counselling Storied Through Text, Metaphor, And Photographic Images, Gina Wong-Wylie Jun 2006

Narratives Of Developing Counsellors’ Preferred Theories Of Counselling Storied Through Text, Metaphor, And Photographic Images, Gina Wong-Wylie

The Qualitative Report

Reflective practice is integral for developing counsellors to maintain self- awareness and to recognize influences upon one’s personal theory of counselling. In this exploratory narrative inquiry research, four doctoral level counselling psychologists participated to uncover “What are the personal stories of developing counsellors and in what ways are lived stories reflective of counsellors' personal theories of counselling?" The researcher employed a butterfly metaphor, and photographs to illustrate lived stories. Dawn, East, Crystal, Sean, and the researcher’s own lived stories elucidated personal counselling theories and approaches. The view that all theories are constructed portraits of theorists' lives is substantiated. A strong …

Goals And Distractions: Explanations Of Early Attrition From Traditional University Freshmen, John L. Rausch, Matthew W. Hamilton Jun 2006

Goals And Distractions: Explanations Of Early Attrition From Traditional University Freshmen, John L. Rausch, Matthew W. Hamilton

The Qualitative Report

This grounded theory study was designed to investigate the factors that influenced 20 "traditional" university freshmen to withdraw prior to the end of their first year at two Midwestern universities. A two-hour audio- taped interview was conducted with each of the participants, and the grounded theory method was utilized to analyze the interview data. Eighteen of the twenty participants had strong high school GPAs and ACT scores, and would not have been identified as being at-risk for attrition. The grounded theory that emerged from the participants' data indicated that an absence of clear educational goals, as well as individual and …

Ring Of Silence: African American Women’S Experiences Related To Their Breasts And Breast Cancer Screening, Eileen Thomas Jun 2006

Ring Of Silence: African American Women’S Experiences Related To Their Breasts And Breast Cancer Screening, Eileen Thomas

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore women’s memories and feelings concerning their breasts and breast cancer screening experiences in relation to their current breast cancer screening behaviors. Twelve African American women shared stories that were generated in written narratives and individual interviews. Two core themes emerged from the data analysis: silence and societal contradictions. On further review and interpretation of the core themes, one integrative theme became apparent: Ring of silence. Contradictory messages women receive from society, both voiced and unvoiced, can have a long- term effect on how some women perceive their bodies, and how they value …

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor Jun 2006

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we argue that for the secondary analysis of qualitative data to be effective, researchers need to subject any accompanying interviewer notes to the secondary analysis process. The secondary analysis of interviewer notes can provide important insight into the research process and the attitudes, experiences, and expectations of those collecting the data. Such information is essential if meaningful analyses are to be offered. Using interviewer notes from a little known research project on youth transitions form the 1960s, this paper explores how the interviewers’ experiences of the research process and their perceptions are documented in the interviewer notes.

The Collateral Source Rule: A Common Law Norm Under Special Interest Attack, David Schap, Andrew Feeley Jun 2006

The Collateral Source Rule: A Common Law Norm Under Special Interest Attack, David Schap, Andrew Feeley

Economics Department Working Papers

According to Posnerian law and economics, common law (i.e., judge-made law) tends to promote efficiency. Public choice teaches that statutory (legislated) law need have no such efficiency property because, unlike appointed judges, legislators are subject to short election cycles and are beholden to special interests for election and re-election. The collateral source rule is a common law norm that permits an injured party to recover damages from both the tortfeasor (injurer) and from private insurance. Published work in the law and economics literature indicates that despite an appearance that the rule permits unwarranted double recover, the rule is indeed generally …
