Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.

During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. Coinciding with the collapse of the southern Levant, Tell el Hesi was abandoned throughout the Middle Bronze …

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut Apr 2006

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dietary reconstruction was performed in order to understand changing prehistoric subsistence patterns in the Central Andean geographical area of the Argentine Cuyo that includes the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza. Archaeologically, the Cuyo is also known as a boundary between Andean agriculturalists and the foragers of Patagonia. One hypothesis being tested is whether this area was one of the last South American cultural groups to convert to maize cultivation, probably around 2000 BP. The process of stable isotope analysis is used to reconstruct the diets of individuals, as it reveals the relative proportions of C3 and C4 plants …

Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag Apr 2006

Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Information literacy is embedded within the traditional disciplinary model of knowledge production wherein the role of the scholar/expert and the process of peer-review are emphasized. Exclusive reference to this model is inadequate in informing the production of knowledge outside of formal academic setting and consequently inadequate in supporting the objectives of liberal learning. Shapiro and Hughes' concept of information literacy as a liberal art provides a useful framework for discussion on alternative models of knowledge production.

The Challenges Of Computerizing A University Library In Nigeria: The Case Of Kashim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Grace Nok

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria is one of Nigeria's first generation universities, opening its doors in 1962. University library computerization in Nigeria has been in the pipeline since the 1970s, although concerted efforts began in the late 1990s. ALICE, an integrated library system which is popular in the UK, was acquired and implemented then. Challenges to library automation include poor infrastructure, a low level of computer literacy among the staff, and a lack of resources for maintaining and updating hardware and software.

Senseless Kindness: The Politics Of Cost Benefit Analysis, Louis E. Wolcher Apr 2006

Senseless Kindness: The Politics Of Cost Benefit Analysis, Louis E. Wolcher

ExpressO

This essay identifies a social phenomenon that the Russian-Jewish novelist and war correspondent Vasily Grossman calls "senseless kindness." Emerging without prior warning from certain face-to-face encounters between human beings, the striking reversal of preferences that characterizes this phenomenon can be used to cast a critical light on the practices of Cost Benefit Analysis ("CBA"). Not only does senseless kindness highlight the troubling theoretical problem of determining the "correct" ex ante—the point in time at which CBA measures people's preferences—it also points towards the possibility of a more general critique of CBA's indifference to how preferences are formed and expressed. The …

The Fragmentation Pathways Of Protonated Amiton In The Gas Phase: Towards The Structural Characterisation Of Organophosphorus Chemical Warfare Agents By Electrospray Ionisation Tandem Mass Spectrometry, S. Ellis-Steinborner, A. Ramachandran, Stephen J. Blanksby Apr 2006

Blanksby

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Amiton (O,O-diethyl-S-[2-(diethylamino)ethyl] phosphorothiolate), otherwise known as VG, is listed in Schedule 2 of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and has a structure closely related to VX (O-ethyl-S-(2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methylphosphonothiolate). Fragmentation of protonated VG in the gas phase was performed using an electrospray ionisation ion trap mass spectrometer (ESI-ITMS) and revealed several characteristic product ions. Quantum chemical calculations provide the most probable structures for these ions as well as the likely unimolecular mechanisms by which they are formed. The decomposition pathways predicted by computation are consistent with deuterium labeling studies. The combination of experimental and theoretical data suggests that the fragmentation pathways …

A total of 194 African American and Caucasian parents were recruited from the community to participate in this study. Parents completed measures on barriers and attitudes toward treatment for themselves and their children, utilization of mental health services for themselves and their children, and their own current …

The Role And Effect Of Advertising On Women During World War Ii, Laura Elizabeth Francis Apr 2006

The Role And Effect Of Advertising On Women During World War Ii, Laura Elizabeth Francis

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Advertising had an overwhelming effect on women during World War II; many women were influenced by advertising in the media to behave a certain way, buy certain products, and also support the war effort in a variety of ways. In the 1940s while many American women’s husbands, fiances, boyfriends, brothers, and sons were going off to fight in the War abroad, many women were fighting a war of their own on the home front. While men could prove they were active patriotic citizens by fighting in the military and taking government positions, female’s roles were re-written to show what they …
