The Anchor, Volume 119.20: April 12, 2006, Hope College
The Anchor: 2006
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Pork Industry -- A Year Later, Allen Prosch
The Pork Industry -- A Year Later, Allen Prosch
Cornhusker Economics
The only words for the pork industry in 2004, were “demand driven.” The industry had just put an annual record amount of pork on the market and received near record high prices for doing so. Demand for pork exports were at record levels and domestic demand was fueled by high protein diets.

Low Doses Of Memantine Disrupt Memory In Adult Rats, Catherine Creeley, David Wozniak, Joanne Labruyere, George Taylor, John Olney
Psychology Faculty Works
Memantine, a drug recently approved for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, has been characterized as a unique NMDA antagonist that confers protection against excitotoxic neurodegeneration without the serious side effects that other NMDA antagonists are known to cause. In the present study, we determined what dose of memantine is required to protect the adult rat brain against an NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxic process and then tested that dose and a range of lower doses to determine whether the drug in this dose range is associated with significant side effects. Consistent with previous research, we found that memantine confers a neuroprotective effect beginning …

Mexican Northern Border Municipalities, Financial Dependence And Institutions, Jorge Ibarra Salazar, Andre V. Mollick
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mexican northern border municipalities have experienced economic and populational growth rates that are much higher than other Mexican regions resulting in higher demand for public services and infrastructure. The different institutional framework, both fiscal and legal, faced by municipalities in every Mexican State might impact the fiscal behavior of local governments. This article examines whether border municipalities are more financially dependent on central authorities due to the high demand for public services in their jurisdictions and their inability to obtain sufficient funding. Several econometric models are estimated for 300 Mexican municipalities in the year 2000. A strong and negative relationship …

The Next Mother Lode For Large-Scale Digitization? Historic Serials, Copyrights, And Shared Knowledge, John Mark Ockerbloom
The Next Mother Lode For Large-Scale Digitization? Historic Serials, Copyrights, And Shared Knowledge, John Mark Ockerbloom
John Mark Ockerbloom
Much of the publicity around recent mass-digitization projects focuses on the millions of books they promise to make freely readable online. Because of copyright, though, most of the books provided in full will be of mainly historical interest. But much of the richest historical text content is not in books at all, but in the newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and scholarly journals where events are reported firsthand, stories and essays make their debut, research findings are announced and critiqued, and issues of the day debated. Back runs of many of these serials are available in major research institutions but often in …

The Limits Of U.S. Governmental Power In Times Of Crisis, Adam M. Goldwater
The Limits Of U.S. Governmental Power In Times Of Crisis, Adam M. Goldwater
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Government’s Emergency Power Throughout the History of the United States This paper reviews the use of power by the United States government during times of crisis. This paper analyzes both the arguments from Thomas Hobbes and John Locke regarding how limited both believe government should be. Throughout this debate John Locke believes that in leaving a state of nature we must enter into civil society through a social contract with each other. Hobbes’ view of the state of nature is such that he believes that there should be virtually no limitations on the power of government in eliminating citizens from …

Chronic/Life Threatening Illnesses From The Perspective Of Latino Men, Melissa Sierra
Chronic/Life Threatening Illnesses From The Perspective Of Latino Men, Melissa Sierra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Much of the research on illness focuses on how people, particularly white men, cope with chronic/life threatening illnesses often adopting a "sick role" identity. For Latinos this type of identity transformation is complex as there is no place for dependency and passivity in traditional depictions of Latino masculinity. Latino men take pride in their manhood. As a result, they have trouble accepting their illness and the sick role. They do not tend to take their illness seriously, nor are they comfortable admitting to others the seriousness of their illness. My research focuses on how Latino men renegotiate a sense of …
