Book Review: Myself And Strangers: A Memoir Of Apprenticeship, Mark Busby Jan 2006

Book Review: Myself And Strangers: A Memoir Of Apprenticeship, Mark Busby

Great Plains Quarterly

Over the years John Graves, Texas's most noted environmental writer, has lamented time wasted on trying to produce a major work of fiction, a subject that becomes especially clear in Graves's memoir, Myself and Strangers, where he suggests that he should have produced more but was too often distracted.

Book Review: Finding Sand Creek: History, Archeology, And The 1864 Massacre Site, Lincoln Faller

Great Plains Quarterly

Metal detritus of war and an old map, recently discovered in Chicago helped an interdisciplinary team of historians, archeologists, geomorphologists, ethnographers, remote imagers, and descendants of the victims of the Sand Creek Massacre to find the exact site where that atrocity was enacted; so this book reports,

Book Review: Viet Cong At Wounded Knee: The Trail Of A Blackfeet Activist, Tom Holm Jan 2006

Book Review: Viet Cong At Wounded Knee: The Trail Of A Blackfeet Activist, Tom Holm

Great Plains Quarterly

Woody Kipp's life story is a reflection of a new generation of Native writers and activists. His autobiography has nothing to do with trying to save the white world from itself or to explain Indians to a curious and perhaps even sympathetic white audience. The white world literally and figuratively took aim at Woody Kipp (and a number of other American Indian Vietnam veterans) for daring to oppose the injustices he saw in Indian life. He became, as the title of his book indicates, the then-current enemy of the American state. He was, ironically, a domestic version of the Viet …

Book Review: Alien Heart: The Life And Work Of Margaret Laurence, Frances W. Kaye Jan 2006

Book Review: Alien Heart: The Life And Work Of Margaret Laurence, Frances W. Kaye

Great Plains Quarterly

The best introduction to Margaret Laurence will always be the writings of Margaret Laurence, especially the five Manawaka books, the three published volumes of her correspondence, and her memoir. But after one has become acquainted with that complex, vulnerable, wise, generous, and conflicted woman/writer, Alien Heart is a good source for recapitulation and further detail. Without blinking at or emphasizing Margaret's drinking and sometimes self-destructive relationships, Powers strongly recalls her kindness, her passion, her idiom, and her "place to stand upon."

Book Review: Standing Bear Is A Person: The True Story Of A Native American's Quest For Justice, Kyle C. Wyatt Jan 2006

Book Review: Standing Bear Is A Person: The True Story Of A Native American's Quest For Justice, Kyle C. Wyatt

Great Plains Quarterly

Poncas still remember the events surrounding the 1879 verdict that first recognized Constitutionally protected Native rights. Descendants - some only one generation removed from the forced march that preceded the trial - continue to live on the Great Plains and share the stories of the long walk to Indian Territory. Unfortunately, this text docs not attempt to incorporate contemporary Native voices that can enrich such an important historical narrative.

Businesses that position themselves for growth are focusing on building a dynamic business culture for understanding and recruiting today’s employees.

Impact Of Increased Minimum Wage On Southern San Joaquin Valley Navel Orange Producers, Kallie Donnelly, Jay E. Noel Jan 2006

Impact Of Increased Minimum Wage On Southern San Joaquin Valley Navel Orange Producers, Kallie Donnelly, Jay E. Noel

Agribusiness

The California Institute for the Study of Specialty Crops (CISSC) developed a representative farm simulation model for navel producers in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. The farm simulation model simulates a producer’s financial statements for 2005-2014, including the income statement, statement of cash flows, and balance sheet. This model allows model prices and yields to vary over time. The variability is based on historical variation in navel orange prices and yield. This is done to capture the risk and uncertainty associated with variable prices and yields.

Spirituality And Counseling : An Integration Into Practice, Nikole D. Paulie Jan 2006

Spirituality And Counseling : An Integration Into Practice, Nikole D. Paulie

Graduate Research Papers

Mental health counselors have traditionally practiced the idea of separation, not integration, in regards to the exploration and use of spirituality in the counseling setting. Research and shifting trends have shown spirituality is not only important to clientele, but these clients also express a desire to incorporate their spirituality into counseling. Through enforcing appropriate competencies and guidelines, incorporating spirituality has proven effective within clinical settings. Counselors who do desire to integrate spirituality into counseling have limited resources available for guidance.

The purpose of this paper is three fold, to provide rationale for the integration of spirituality in counseling, discuss important …

Review And Recommendations For The City Of Cedar Falls, Iowa Regarding Phase Ii Compliance With The Federal Clean Water Act: The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Rebecca Kauten

Graduate Research Papers

As the United States developed into an urban and industrial economy, the physical landscape of the nation changed. Wilderness gave weigh to civilization and, over time, the urban lifestyle evolved. Since then, unpaved right-of-way has become impervious skeletons that hold modern cities intact. Lined with buildings and rooftops, parking lots and driveways, water can only be directed from above ground to other locations when it rains or snows. This paper is a literature review of the history of stormwater management practices, description of the Phase II program within the Federal Clean Water Act, and a descriptive analysis of structural and …

Balancing Leisure And Work: Evidence From The Seasonal Home, Susan I. Stewart, Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 2006

Balancing Leisure And Work: Evidence From The Seasonal Home, Susan I. Stewart, Kenneth M. Johnson

Sociology

Seasonal homes are used during leisure time for many recreational activities, yet recent technological innovations have diminished the separation between the work place and the seasonal home. In a survey of Walworth County seasonal home owners, most who work full time report they seldom work during vacations and weekends from their seasonal home. Yet there is a distinct subgroup who do mix work into weekends and vacations for a variety of reasons. The most frequent reasons given by these people for working from the seasonal home were related to the expectations of coworkers and clients. Understanding more about the habits …

Trends In High Incomes And Behavioral Responses To Taxation: Evidence From Executive Compensation And Statistics Of Income Data, Nada O. Eissa, Seth H. Giertz

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper examines income trends from 1992 to 2004 and the responsiveness of different income measures to tax changes for corporate executives and for the very highest income U.S. taxpayers. We detail the growth in executive compensation and break down the components of that growth by sources, such as the value of options and stock grants, as well as bonus income. We then examine income trends at various points in the income distribution for executives and for all taxpayers. An empirical strategy similar to that employed by Goolsbee (2000) is then used to examine the responsiveness to tax rates of …

The Elasticity Of Taxable Income During The 1990s: A Sensitivity Analysis, Seth H. Giertz Jan 2006

The Elasticity Of Taxable Income During The 1990s: A Sensitivity Analysis, Seth H. Giertz

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper examines alternative methodologies for measuring responses to the 1990 and 1993 federal tax increases. The methodologies build on those employed by Gruber and Saez (2002), Carroll (1998), and Auten and Carroll (1999). Internal Revenue Service tax return data for the project are from the Statistics of Income, which heavily oversamples high-income filers. Special attention is paid to the importance of sample income restrictions and methodology. Estimates are broken down by income group to measure how responses to tax changes vary by income. In general, estimates are quite sensitive to a number of different factors. Using an approach similar …

The High Cost Of Bullying, Ramona J. Schmidt Jan 2006

The High Cost Of Bullying, Ramona J. Schmidt

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to understand there are not simple solutions towards prevention of bullying. Anti-bullying programs are being implemented throughout the world, and their effectiveness will depend on the commitment of those involved. Bullying is about power; an imbalance of power. Bullying occurs when an individual intentionally inflicts pain on someone else through physical, verbal, or social aggression. Characteristics of the victim and the bully are reviewed along with consequences of each role. Interventions, such as Social Skills Training (SST) as well as empowerment strategies targeting the victims of bullying are useful. But the most effective method …

Dynamical Volatilities For Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Kyungsik Kim, Seong-Min Yoon, C. Christopher Lee, Myung-Kul Yum Jan 2006

Dynamical Volatilities For Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Kyungsik Kim, Seong-Min Yoon, C. Christopher Lee, Myung-Kul Yum

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

We study the continuous time random walk theory from financial tick data of the yen-dollar exchange rate transacted at the Japanese financial market. The dynamical behavior of returns and volatilities in this case is particularly treated at the long-time limit. We find that the volatility for prices shows a power-law with anomalous scaling exponent κ = 0.96 (one minute) and 0.86 (ten minutes), and that our behavior occurs in the subdiffusive process. Our result presented will be compared with that of recent numerical calculations.
