Service Learning Outcomes Research: Replications, A Forgotten Species, Howard M. Henderson Jan 2006

Service Learning Outcomes Research: Replications, A Forgotten Species, Howard M. Henderson

Howard M Henderson

The effect of service-learning on college and university students has attracted considerable scholarly attention in the last decade. However, few attempts to replicate studies are conducted. The purpose of the research reported in this article is threefold: (1) to assess the reliability of a modified version of Kelly, Chase, and Tucker's (1979) taxonomy to discriminate accurately between sub-categories of replication in studies of service-learning outcomes; (2) to determine the extent of replications in the service-learning outcomes literature; and (3) to make recommendations based on the study's results. The research sample consists of data-based articles published in peer-reviewed journals between[space] 1993 …

The Chinese Challenge. Hallucinations For Other Futures, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

The main question is: What can we learn from China that China is not teaching us? It is proposed that a study of polycontextural logic and morphogrammatics could be helpful to discover this new kind of rationality.

Medio Siglo De Geografía Histórica En Norteamérica [Half A Century Of Historical Geography In North America], Shawn Van Ausdal Jan 2006

Medio Siglo De Geografía Histórica En Norteamérica [Half A Century Of Historical Geography In North America], Shawn Van Ausdal

Shawn Van Ausdal

This article recounts the development of historical geography in the North America over the last half century by dividing it into three periods that account for both the richness of the field and its persistent marginality. In the 1950s and 60s, human and historical geographers studied places, giving discipline a strong cohesion. The distinctiveness of historical geography lay with its attention to the past. In the 1970s, the discipline turned towards spatial patterns and laws. While some historical geographers changed with the current, other remained a bastion of tradition. In the last couple decades, human geographers have turned to social …

Acorn Use As Food, David A. Bainbridge Jan 2006

Acorn Use As Food, David A. Bainbridge

David A Bainbridge

The acorns from oaks (Quercus) and tan oaks (Lithocarpus) have been used as food for many thousands of years. They occur in the archaeological record of the early town sites in the Zagros Mountains, at Catal Hüyük (6000 BC), and oak trees were carefully inventoried by the Assyrians during the reign of Sargon II. In Europe, Asia, North Africa, the Mid-East, and North America, acorns were once a staple food. They are still a commercial food crop in several countries. Acorns are still harvested and used in several areas of the United States, most notably Southern Arizona and California. There …

Re-Examining The Politics Of U.S. Intervention In Early 20th Century Nicaragua: José Madriz And The Conservative Restoration, Yann P. Kerevel Jan 2006

Re-Examining The Politics Of U.S. Intervention In Early 20th Century Nicaragua: José Madriz And The Conservative Restoration, Yann P. Kerevel

Yann P. Kerevel

This research re-examines the U.S. intervention in Nicaragua in 1909-10. Most literature of this period argues that the United States forced the dictator Zelaya out of office in 1909; however, I contend that the argument that U.S. intervention caused the fall of Zelaya does not clearly match up to the historical record. Instead, I argue it is much more compelling to examine U.S. policy toward José Madriz to understand the impact of the intervention. It is clear that U.S. policy was the decisive factor in the fall of Madriz, while it is less convincing in the case of Zelaya.

Imaginary Goods And Keynesian Kaleidics: Rejoinder To Bruce Caldwell, Greg Hill Jan 2006

Imaginary Goods And Keynesian Kaleidics: Rejoinder To Bruce Caldwell, Greg Hill

Greg Hill

In his reply to my critical book review, “Don’t Shoot the Messenger: Caldwell’s Hayek and the Insularity of the Austrian Project (Hill 2005),” Bruce Caldwell explains his decision to focus on Hayek’s methodological views, criticizes my account of Carl Menger’s “imaginary goods,” and rejects the line of reasoning I advanced drawing Keynesian conclusions from Hayekian premises. In response, I argue that Caldwell’s proposed methodology for assessing the significance of “imaginary goods” in advanced market economies is ill-conceived and that my pathway from Hayek to Keynes merely pursues a thoroughgoing subjectivism to its inexorable conclusion, which is not, as Caldwell suggests, …

Multivariate Visualization And Analysis Of Photomapped Artifact Scatters, Nathan M. Craig, Aldenderfer Mark Jan 2006

Multivariate Visualization And Analysis Of Photomapped Artifact Scatters, Nathan M. Craig, Aldenderfer Mark

Nathan M Craig

Simultaneous analysis of relationships between multiple artifact classes is required for characterization of many types of activity areas. This paper illustrates improved forms of multivariate visualization, spatial analysis and integration of experimental results that are possible with GIS based photomapping. Techniques are demonstrated through analysis of a hearth associated artifact scatter exposed during excavations of a Late Archaic pithouse at Jiskairumoko, Peru. A multivariate density raster is created and additive color visualization is used for simultaneous display of three artifact distributions. Performing unconstrained clustering in a GIS, space is classified by simultaneous relative density relationships between multiple object types.

Through A Glass Darkly’: Assessing The ‘New’ War Against Corruption In Nigeria, Shola J. Omotola Jan 2006

Through A Glass Darkly’: Assessing The ‘New’ War Against Corruption In Nigeria, Shola J. Omotola

Shola J. Omotola Mr

It is no longer news that corruption is endemic in Nigeria. Neither is it news that the ‘democratic’ government of President Obasanjo is waging an unprecedented war against corruption. What is, however, controversial is the extent to which the ‘new’ war has succeeded in addressing this scourge. This article engages this crucial question and submits that while the legal and institutional anchorages of the war offer a good point of departure, they remain grossly inadequate. This largely explains why the war has been underproductive and caught in a deepening crisis of legitimacy. What is required is the nourishing and re-envisioning …

La Reforma Política Pendiente, Jose Luis Sardon Jan 2006

La Reforma Política Pendiente, Jose Luis Sardon

Jose Luis Sardon

Perspectives On The Fears Of Death & Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D. Jan 2006

Perspectives On The Fears Of Death & Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D.

David San Filippo Ph.D.

This E-Book will examine some perspectives on fear, the fears of death, and constructs used to overcome or deal with the fears of death. By examining the literature on fear in general, a framework can be developed to understand how individuals become fearful. In the section, “Fears of Death,” what people fear about death and why they fear it will be discussed.

Historical Perspectives On Attitudes Concerning Death And Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D. Jan 2006

Historical Perspectives On Attitudes Concerning Death And Dying, David San Filippo Ph.D.

David San Filippo Ph.D.

Beliefs and practices concerning death have changed throughout human history. In pre-modern times, death at a young age was common due to living conditions and medical practices. As medical science has advanced and helped humans live longer, attitudes and responses to death also have changed. In modern Western societies, death is often ignored or feared. Changes in lifestyles and improved medical science have depersonalized death and made it an encroachment on life instead of part of life. This has left many people ill equipped to deal with death when it touches their lives.

The Value Of The Awareness Of Near-Death Experiences, David San San Filippo Ph.D. Jan 2006

The Value Of The Awareness Of Near-Death Experiences, David San San Filippo Ph.D.

David San Filippo Ph.D.

A principal value of Near-death experiences may be in the telling of the stories and the effect these stories have for others to reduce their fears of and concerns about death. This E-book explores the impact and value knowing about, not having a near-death experience has on those who have heard, watch, or read reports of this phenomenon.
