The Breeders' Cup, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 2006

The Breeders' Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Since the first running of the Breeders' Cup in 1984, I have sat before my television each year and watched the greatest day of horse racing available in this country. I haven't seen all the Breeders' Cups, having been out of the country for a few of them, but have seen most of these great spectacles of racing.

What Type Of Leadership Does Africa Need To Join The First World?, Aida Ayalew Nov 2006

What Type Of Leadership Does Africa Need To Join The First World?, Aida Ayalew

Theses and Graduate Projects

Internal conflict and lack of leadership are becoming major prohibiting agents that are hindering African countries from economic growth and prosperity. Many countries in Africa have ethnic, racial or political conflicts that are progressing and most of these conflicts are the result of negative leadership.

Resolving internal conflict in Africa requires taking responsibility for the people and for the country. Taking responsibility requires a hard study of the effects of internal conflict, the effects of war, and other contributing factors that hinder Africa from economic growth. The only way that African countries can take charge in solving the problems of …

Digital Radio Cultures In Europe: Progress To Date And Prospects For The Future:A Review Of Research Produced By Drace, Brian O'Neill, Stephen Lax

Conference Papers

Digital Radio Cultures in Europe (DRACE), was established in 2004 under the COST Action A20 “The Impact of the Internet on Mass Media in Europe”. The original configuration of the COST A20 group included provision for an internet and music research group but this was re-focussed following a re-organisation in which DRACE was more formally incorporated. The group comprises 14 researchers with specific interests in radio from Norway, Finland, Denmark, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Croatia, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The objective of the research group is to be at the forefront of empirical research on changes in radio cultures …

The ‘Meat-Ax’ On The Desktop: A Digital Edition Of Cather's Early Journalism, Andrew Jewell Nov 2006

The ‘Meat-Ax’ On The Desktop: A Digital Edition Of Cather's Early Journalism, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

Willa Cather's work as a journalist, writing for mostly Lincoln and Pittsburgh newspapers when she was in her twenties, is a remarkable and wide-ranging body of work that offers significant insights into major critical questions about Cather and American literary and cultural history. Since her writings were largely critical responses to theatrical productions, books, and music, the articles provide a detailed and rich record of her emerging aesthetic sensibilities during this crucial period of development. Additionally, since she covered such a wide variety of performances, companies, and works, her journalism offers a detailed view of the culture of the 1890s …

U.S. Rural Soldiers Account For A Disproportionately High Share Of Casualties In Iraq And Afghanistan, William P. O'Hare, Bill Bishop

Carsey School of Public Policy

A study by the Carsey Institute found that among U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, those who are from rural America are dying at a higher rate than those soldiers who are from cities and suburbs. According to U.S. Department of Defense records, rural youth enlist in the military at a higher rate than urban and suburban youth and in all but eight states, soldiers from rural areas make up a disproportionately high share of the casualties.

The Ftc And Consumer Privacy In The Coming Decade, Joseph Turow, Chris Jay Hoofnagle, Deirdre K. Mulligan, Nathaniel Good, Jens Grossklags

Large majorities of consumers believe that the term "privacy policy" conveys a baseline level of information practices that protect their privacy. In short, "privacy," like "free" before it, has taken on normative meaning in the marketplace. When consumers see the term "privacy policy," they believe that their privacy will be protected in specific ways. In particular, when consumers see the "privacy policy" they assume that a web site will not share their personal information. Of course, this is not the case. Privacy policies today come in all different flavors. Some …

The Economics Of Dry Distillers Grain As A Creep Feed For Yearling Cattle, Matt Stockton Nov 2006

The Economics Of Dry Distillers Grain As A Creep Feed For Yearling Cattle, Matt Stockton

Cornhusker Economics

With the expected increase in ethanol production, one may expect an increase in production of its by-product, distiller’s grain. This by-product can be either sold as wet distiller’s grain (WDG) or as dry distiller’s grain (DDG). The value of DDG prices is expected to continue to fall relative to the value of corn, making this a much talked about alternative for feeding livestock of many different species. While much of the attention for the use of this by-product feed has been directed toward intensive livestock production such as dairy, hogs and fed cattle, recent work at the West Central Research …

Y-Chromosome Polymorphisms In Southern Arabia, Alicia M. Cadenas Nov 2006

Y-Chromosome Polymorphisms In Southern Arabia, Alicia M. Cadenas

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to explore south Arabia's role in the migratory episodes leaving Africa to Eurasia and back, high-resolution Y-chromosome analyses of males from the United Arab Emirates (164), Qatar (72) and Yemen (62) were performed. The distribution of specific haplogroups (E3bl-M35 and J1-M267) and their microsatellite-based age estimates in southern Arabia offer additional insight on their dissemination. With the exception of Yemen, southern Arabia displays high diversity in its Y-haplogroup substructure and share similarities with populations along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Oman, possibly serving as a coastal corridor for migrations. Elevated rates of consanguinity may have had …

Justice And Justification In The War On Terrorism, Emma Norman Nov 2006

Justice And Justification In The War On Terrorism, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

This paper offers a few preliminary reflections on some ethical implications stemming from the disconnect between the moral rhetoric and the reality of the War on Terrorism. I suggest that the Bush Administration certainly shares a large part of the responsibility for constantly attempting to justify a war that, by the standards of traditional just war theory, is almost impossible to see as just. However, I also suggest that part of the responsibility lies with a public that demands high ethical standards of its public officials, but appears to be ultimately unprepared to face the full consequences of acting ethically …

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris Nov 2006

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris

Libraries Research Publications

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. In particular among primary source materials, manuscripts such as diaries and letters offer …
