The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Indonesia's Exports To The Usa: An Application Of Ardl Bounds Testing Procedure, Arief Bustaman, Kankesu Jayanthakumaran
The Impact Of Exchange Rate Volatility On Indonesia's Exports To The Usa: An Application Of Ardl Bounds Testing Procedure, Arief Bustaman, Kankesu Jayanthakumaran
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper investigates the long-run and short-run impacts of exchange rate volatility on Indonesias exports of priority commodities to the United States of America over the monthly period 1997-2005. Estimates of cointegration relations are obtained using ARDL bounds testing procedure. Estimates of the short-run dynamics are obtained using an error-correction model. The results show significant positive and negative coefficients among the range of commodities. However, in the long-run, majority of commodities tend to support the traditional view that higher exchange rate of volatility leads to higher cost and to less foreign trade. The net effect of exchange rate uncertainty on …
Reliability Of Fault-Tolerant Systems With Parallel Task Processing, Gregory Levitin, Min Xie, Tieling Zhang
Reliability Of Fault-Tolerant Systems With Parallel Task Processing, Gregory Levitin, Min Xie, Tieling Zhang
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The paper considers performance and reliability of fault-tolerant software running on a hardware system that consists of multiple processing units. The software consists of functionally equivalent but independently developed versions that start execution simultaneously. The computational complexity and reliability of different versions are different. The system completes the task execution when the outputs of a pre-specified number of versions coincide. The processing units are characterized by different availability and processing speed. It is assumed that they are able to share the computational burden perfectly and that execution of each version can be fully parallelized. The algorithm based on the universal …

Performance Comparison Of Subtractive Resistive Readout With Conventional Resistive Readout For A High-Resolution Compact Gamma Camera, Y J. Qi, M J. Zhang, C L. Zhao, R F. Wojcik
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The purpose of this study was to investigate an optimal readout for a high-resolution compact gamma camera with maximum performance in crystal element identifications. The compact camera is based on a pixellated Nal(Tl) crystal with 1.2 mm pixel size coupled to a 5" Hamamatsu R3292 PSPMT. A conventional resistive-chain readout was initially developed for the camera. Then a novel subtractive resistive readout developed was utilized to optimize the performance of the camera. The performance of the camera was evaluated by raw flood images of a 137Cs source. The results show that the conventional resistive readout results in a significant shrinkage …

On The Performance Of Short Forward Error-Correcting Codes, Sheng Tong, Dengsheng Lin, Aleksandar Kavcic, Li Ping, Baoming Bai
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This letter investigates the performance of short forward error-correcting (FEC) codes. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and concatenated zigzag codes are chosen as representatives of classical algebraic codes and modern simple iteratively decodable codes, respectively. Additionally, random binary linear codes are used as a baseline reference. Our main results (demonstrated by simulations and ensemble distance spectrum analysis) are as follows: 1) Short RS codes are as good as random binary linear codes; 2) Carefully designed short low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are almost as good as random binary linear codes; 3) Low complexity belief propagation decoders incur considerable performance loss at short coding …

On Short Forward Error-Correcting Codes For Wireless Communication Systems, Sheng Tong, Dengsheng Lin, Aleksandar Kavcic, Baoming Bai, Li Ping
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
For real-time wireless communications, short forward error-correcting (FEC) codes are indispensable due to the strict delay requirement. In this paper we study the performance of short FEC codes. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and concatenated zigzag (CZ) codes are chosen as representatives of classical algebraic codes and modern simple iterative decodable codes, respectively. Additionally, we use random binary linear codes as a baseline reference for comparison. Our main results (demonstrated by both simulation and ensemble distance spectrum analysis) are as follows: 1) Short RS codes are as good as random binary linear codes; 2) Carefully designed short low- density parity-check (LDPC) codes …
The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
The Challenges, Prospects, And Promise Of Transpersonal Psychology, Paul F. Cunningham
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Several substantial critiques remain a source of fractionalizing debate within transpersonal
psychology, including the weakness of its definition, whether it is redundant with Wilber’s
integral psychology, whether it is a scientific field, whether it is too metaphysical, whether it
neglects the problem of evil, and what contribution can it make to mainstream psychology.
This article explicates these and related areas of critique and provides a response that identifies
the essential challenges and future prospects of transpersonal psychology. The article also
emphasizes the field’s unique role as a potential bridge connecting psychological science with
the transpersonal psyche in a way that …
A Third Model Of Self-Construal: The Metapersonal Self, Teresa L. Decicco, Mirella L. Stroink
A Third Model Of Self-Construal: The Metapersonal Self, Teresa L. Decicco, Mirella L. Stroink
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This research adds a third model and measure of self-construal to the current psychological literature: the metapersonal self-construal. This model extends previous theory and research, which has established two self-construal orientations to date: the independent and interdependent self-construal. The research presents a series of studies investigating the theoretical and psychometric properties of the third model and measure. Study 1 produced a valid and reliable 10-item self-report scale of the metapersonal self. Study 2 determined the scale to be low in social desirability bias. Studies 3 and 4 examined the convergent and discriminant validity of the three self-construal scales. Investigations among …
Structural Reinterpretation Of Poverty By Examining Working Poverty: Implications For Community And Policy Practice, Philip Young P. Hong, Stephen Wernet
Structural Reinterpretation Of Poverty By Examining Working Poverty: Implications For Community And Policy Practice, Philip Young P. Hong, Stephen Wernet
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
This exploratory research focused on the structural context of working poverty, thereby transcending its individual or behavioral aspects. Two major questions guided this study: (1) How are the working poor different compared to the working nonpoor? (2) How do structural conditions affect the chances of one being working poor? Central findings of the study were that four primary sets of factors—demographic, human capital, employment barriers, and labor market positions—contribute to an individual's likelihood of being among the working poor. The structural factors—employment barriers and labor market positions—significantly contributed to the effects of human capital and demographic variables. All four factors …

The Institutional Entrepreneur As Modern Prince: The Strategic Face Of Power In Contested Fields, David Levy, Maureen A. Scully
The Institutional Entrepreneur As Modern Prince: The Strategic Face Of Power In Contested Fields, David Levy, Maureen A. Scully
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
This paper develops a theoretical framework that situates institutional entrepreneurship by drawing from Gramsci’s concept of hegemony to understand the contingent stabilization of organizational fields, and by employing his discussion of the Modern Prince as the collective agent who organizes and strategizes counter-hegemonic challenges. Our framework makes three contributions. First, we characterize the interlaced material, discursive, and organizational dimensions of field structure. Second, we argue that strategy must be examined more rigorously as the mode of action by which institutional entrepreneurs engage with field structures. Third, we argue that institutional entrepreneurship, in challenging the position of incumbent actors and stable …
Firm Heterogeneity And Market Selection In Sub‐Saharan Africa: Does It Spur Industrial Progress?, Admasu Shiferaw
Firm Heterogeneity And Market Selection In Sub‐Saharan Africa: Does It Spur Industrial Progress?, Admasu Shiferaw
Arts & Sciences Articles
This article investigates the processes of market selection and industry dynamics in a sub‐Saharan Africa context. Using census‐based longitudinal data, it examines the distribution of productivity within an industry to determine whether patterns of firm entry, exit, and survival are driven by underlying efficiency differences. It also estimates the contributions to industry‐level productivity growth of producer turnover and the reallocation of resources from less efficient producers to more efficient ones. The article shows that markets in sub‐Saharan Africa, as represented by Ethiopia, are at least as strong as those in other regions in selecting efficient firms. Tolerance of inefficient firms …

Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Death And Taxes, Including Inflation: The Public Versus Economists, Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Jeffrey Rogers Hummel
Inflation worries the general public much more than it does the economics profession, and economists remain perplexed as to exactly why. The costs that concern economists are inflation’s deadweight loss. But that is only a part of the losses that concern the public, because inflation simultaneously transfers some of people’s income into the hands of government. The fact that the seigniorage tax may pay for programs they favor is a separate issue. Moreover, unlike income and other taxes, which people in democratic countries may think they have some control over through voting, seigniorage appears utterly arbitrary. In fact, people can …

Obtaining More Accurate And Reliable Information From Adolescents Regarding Sti/Hiv Risk Behaviors, Barbara Mensch, Paul C. Hewett
Obtaining More Accurate And Reliable Information From Adolescents Regarding Sti/Hiv Risk Behaviors, Barbara Mensch, Paul C. Hewett
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
To investigate the quality of self-reported data on sexual behavior, Population Council researchers conducted a study in a rural district of Malawi. They implemented a randomized experiment to assess whether audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) produces more valid data on sexual behavior than face-to-face interviews. The Malawi study builds on an experiment conducted as part of a household-based survey of Kenyan adolescents. In Kenya and Malawi, there is clear evidence that mode of interviewing and probing of various sexual partnerships affect the reporting of sexual activity. According to Promoting Healthy, Safe, and Productive Transitions to Adulthood Brief No. 25, ACASI is …

Les Filles Sont Oubliées : Rediriger Les Interventions En Matière De Vih Vers Les Plus Vulnérables, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Jovens Abandonadas: Redireccionar As Intervenções De Vih No Sentido Das Mais Vulneráveis, Judith Bruce
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Girls' Adolescence In Burkina Faso: A Pivot Point For Social Change, Martha Brady, Lydia Saloucou, Erica Chong
Girls' Adolescence In Burkina Faso: A Pivot Point For Social Change, Martha Brady, Lydia Saloucou, Erica Chong
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
As closer attention is paid to the lives of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, girls are found to be clearly disadvantaged, compared with their male counterparts. Burkinabé girls are frequently married at a young age, and more than one-third of married girls find themselves in polygamous unions as second or third wives, married to much older men. Understanding and recognizing girls’ realities is an important first step in planning appropriate and meaningful interventions for them. Girls who are unmarried, “promised,” engaged, or married face different constraints and merit different program approaches. This report by the Population Council aims to fill gaps …

Support By Migrants To Their Elderly Parents In Rural Cambodia And Thailand: A Comparative Study, Zachary Zimmer, Kim Korinek, John Knodel, Napaporn Chayovan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Internal migration in Southeast Asia raises questions about strains upon traditional systems of support for older adults. While remittances to parents’ households play a role in rural household economies, uncertainty remains regarding whether and under what circumstances children interact with their elderly parents. This paper focuses on the adult children of older persons living in rural Cambodia and Thailand and examines the determinants of personal visits, monetary remittances, and more general forms of household support. Analyses consider ways in which geographically distant children support parents, the extent to which characteristics of parents, children, and households enhance or detract from these …

Ethnic Differentials In Parental Health Seeking For Childhood Illness In Vietnam, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan, James F. Phillips
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The recent introduction of user fees for Vietnam’s primary healthcare services has generated concern that economic policies may adversely affect health-seeking behavior and health outcomes of the poor, particularly among impoverished families who are members of socially marginalized minority groups. This Population Council working paper examines this debate by analyzing parental recall of illness and care-seeking for sick children under age 5 recorded by the 2001–02 Vietnam National Health Survey. Ethnic differentials are evident in all geographic and income levels, although adverse effects of minority status are most pronounced among poor households in remote areas. Results suggest that social equity …

South Africa: Youth Centers: A Costly Way To Provide Reproductive Health Services, Frontiers In Reproductive Health
Reproductive Health
Numerous reproductive health programs sponsor youth centers, which provide recreation and job-skills training as a means of attracting young people to seek reproductive health services or information. However, the productivity, cost, and cost-effectiveness of this approach are not clearly documented. In 2000, FRONTIERS conducted a cost analysis as part of a larger study on the effectiveness of three different youth center models in South Africa. The study focused on 8 of the 12 centers included in the larger study, chosen to be representative of each model. All the selected centers offered clinical services, seven also offered reproductive health information or …
