A Toolbox For Public Relations: The Oeuvre Of Michel Foucault, Judith Motion, S. R. Leitch Jan 2007

A Toolbox For Public Relations: The Oeuvre Of Michel Foucault, Judith Motion, S. R. Leitch

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this article, we provide a brief introduction to the work of Michel Foucault. Our focus is on the major themes of Foucault’s work: discourse, power/knowledge and subjectivity. We demonstrate the rich contribution that Foucauldian theory can make to public relations practice and scholarship by moving beyond a focus on excellence towards an understanding of public relations as a discourse practice with power effects.

Corporate Brands And Social Brands: Co-Branding Gm-Free And Uk Supermarkets, S. R. Leitch, S. Davenport Jan 2007

Corporate Brands And Social Brands: Co-Branding Gm-Free And Uk Supermarkets, S. R. Leitch, S. Davenport

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we introduce the concept of “social brands” and examine the potential for co-branding between corporate brands and social brands to enhance or damage the value of corporate brands. Co-branding has been theorized in terms of the relationship between the brands of organizations, products and services. However, from a discourse perspective, issues may also be understood to function as what we term “social brands” that may be incorporated in a co-branding strategy. We deploy Leitch and Richardson’s (2003) brand web model to analyze the potential benefits and dangers of forming co-branded relationships with social brands. We draw on …

The study conducted semi-structured interviews with the Heads of Human Resources of fourteen software firms to obtain a greater understanding of the similarities between reporting and managed HC practices. The study identified most reported and least reported attributes of HC using content analysis and explained their …

Strategic Ambiguity As A Discourse Practice: The Role Of Keywords In The Discourse On 'Sustainable' Biotechnology, S. Leitch, S. Davenport Jan 2007

Strategic Ambiguity As A Discourse Practice: The Role Of Keywords In The Discourse On 'Sustainable' Biotechnology, S. Leitch, S. Davenport

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

In this article we examined the ways in which strategic ambiguity (Eisenberg, 1984) in the use of keywords (Williams, 1976/1983) served an enabling function within a discourse marked by conflict and ideological divisions. Our analysis focused on the intertextual relationships between five documents intended by the Government to guide the development of biotechnology in New Zealand. Through our analysis we identified ‘sustainability’ as a keyword and three major roles for the deployment of the discourse strategy of strategic ambiguity in the use of this keyword. First, strategic ambiguity lent an internal and intertextual coherence to the texts (albeit superficial). Second, …

The Efficiency Of Emerging Stock Markets: Empirical Evidence From The South Asian Region, Arusha V. Cooray, G. Wickramasighe Jan 2007

The Efficiency Of Emerging Stock Markets: Empirical Evidence From The South Asian Region, Arusha V. Cooray, G. Wickramasighe

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines the efficiency in the stock markets of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF-1979, 1981), the Phillips-Perron (PP-1988), the Dicky-Fuller Generalized Least Square (DF-GLS-1996) and Elliot-Rothenberg-Stock (ERS – 1996) tests are used to examine weak form stock market efficiency. Weak form efficiency is supported by the classical unit root tests. However, it is not strongly supported for Bangladesh under the DF-GLS and ERS tests. Cointegration and Granger causality tests are used to examine semi-strong form efficiency. Semi-strong form efficiency is not supported as these tests indicate a high degree of interdependence among the …

Rent Seeking Or Market Strengthening? Industry Associations In New Zealand Wool Broking, Simon Ville Jan 2007

Rent Seeking Or Market Strengthening? Industry Associations In New Zealand Wool Broking, Simon Ville

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper builds on recent conceptual work about associations that is drawn from the new institutional economics. It uses evidence from New Zealand wool broking to indicate the circumstances in which industry associations can operate effectively and in the broader public interest. Through their strong associative capacity and effective specialization of function, wool-broking industry associations developed flexible routines for managing wool auctions, mediated disputes, mitigated opportunism, addressed major market disruptions, and served as a communication channel with government. External pressures and monitoring from other business interests, governments, and a competitive wool market constrained rent-seeking behavior, preventing members from benefiting at …

Biofueling Rural Development: Making The Case For Linking Biofuel Production To Rural Revitalization, Jim Kleinschmidt Jan 2007

Biofueling Rural Development: Making The Case For Linking Biofuel Production To Rural Revitalization, Jim Kleinschmidt

Carsey School of Public Policy

Biofuels play a crucial role in America's quest for oil independence. In recent years, the biofuel industry has seen significant technology and efficiency advances, as well as expansions in the materials that can be used to create biofuels. Grains and oilseeds are limited in their ability to meet fuel needs, but a shift to biomass feedstocks offers better production possibilities. For rural communities, locally owned biomass refineries may offer promise of new investment, job growth, and revitalization.

The Rise, Decline And Rise Of Incomes Policies In The Us During The Post-War Era: An Institutional-Analytical Explanation Of Inflation And The Functional Distribution Of Income, Mark Setterfield Jan 2007

The Rise, Decline And Rise Of Incomes Policies In The Us During The Post-War Era: An Institutional-Analytical Explanation Of Inflation And The Functional Distribution Of Income, Mark Setterfield

Faculty Scholarship

This paper is based on the premise that at any point in time, macroeconomic performance is best understood in terms of certain ‘fundamental’ features of the income-generating process that are embedded in a relatively enduring institutional framework, that both affects and is affected by macroeconomic outcomes themselves. This results in the evolution of capitalist economies through a succession of discrete, medium-term episodes of macroeconomic performance. The purpose of the paper is to apply this vision to the explanation of inflation and the functional distribution of income in the post-war US economy. A conflicting claims model of inflation is developed, in …

Exploration Into The Beliefs About Paternal Roles : The Development Of The Beliefs About Paternal Roles Inventory, Anthony M. Bocchicchio

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The aim of this study was to design and validate a self-report inventory of beliefs about paternal roles as expressed by mothers and fathers. A random sample of parents (N = 103) was administered the Beliefs about Paternal Roles – Initial Version to assess its psychometric properties. Results showed positive psychometric properties for 4 (Affection & Emotion, Engagement, Family, and Physical Well-Being) of the 12 proposed domains of paternal roles. Acceptable levels of internal consistency reliability were demonstrated for these four domains by the coefficient alpha of .84. A factor analysis of these four domains yielded a factor that says …

Student Satisfaction And Program Evaluation For The First Three Psy. D. School Psychology Cohorts At The Philadelphia College Of Osteopathic Medicine, Ronald M. Deguffroy

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

There is a noticeable absence in the professional literature regarding what school psychology doctoral students believe leads to satisfaction during their advanced training. Consequently, a general review of available research was conducted to ascertain what other closely related fields say about student satisfaction during doctoral training. As the document progresses, a variety of issues including funding and mentoring as well as considerations for multicultural and ethical issues as they relate to the topic are investigated. A theoretical model of what constitutes a satisfying experience for doctoral training in school psychology is provided. A program specific evaluation was conducted of the …

Grounded Theory : Latino Mental Health Providers' Perceptions Of The Mental Health Beliefs Of Latino Clients, Marcelle Santiago-Serrano Jan 2007

Grounded Theory : Latino Mental Health Providers' Perceptions Of The Mental Health Beliefs Of Latino Clients, Marcelle Santiago-Serrano

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study explores the mental health beliefs of Latinos through the eyes of Latino Mental Health Providers. Many Latinos have a view of psychologists as a "healer." This view was explored relative to that of the cognitive behavioral approach, which has a strong emphasis on its self-help approach to therapy. In addition to its self-help qualities, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recognized for its effectiveness in the mental health treatment of diverse ethnic/cultural populations. However, the CBT philosophy may seem at times, to be contradictory to many Latinos' beliefs that the therapist's role is as a "healer." A five item …

Academic And Social Self-Efficacy In Honors And Non-Honors University Students, Carmen Marie Krapfl Jan 2007

Academic And Social Self-Efficacy In Honors And Non-Honors University Students, Carmen Marie Krapfl

Honors Program Theses

Self-efficacy research has shown that successful past experiences have an influential impact on self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). The purpose of this study was to compare academic and social self-efficacy between university honors and non-honors students. It was hypothesized that honors students would score higher on academic self-efficacy, but would have lower social self efficacy than their non-honors peers. Participants were invited to complete questionnaires on self-efficacy and background information. Results show that honors and non-honors students do not differ significantly in their general or social self-efficacy, but honors students had significantly higher academic self-efficacy. Further research is needed into the cause …

Assessing Baxi’S Thesis On The Emergence Of A Trade-Related Market-Friendly Human Rights Paradigm: Recent Evidence From Nigerian Labour-Led Struggles, Obiora Chinedu Okafor Jan 2007

Assessing Baxi’S Thesis On The Emergence Of A Trade-Related Market-Friendly Human Rights Paradigm: Recent Evidence From Nigerian Labour-Led Struggles, Obiora Chinedu Okafor

Articles & Book Chapters

The objective of the article is to assess some of the sub-claims that emerge from Baxi’s thesis on an emergent trade-related market-friendly human rights paradigm in the light of the available evidence regarding the intense contestations and confrontations that have occurred between Nigeria’s politically and economically transitional Obasanjo regime and a local labour-led coalition. The piece sets out to ascertain the contextual and localised validity of these ‘Baxian’ sub-claims, within the wider context of the government vs. labour confrontations in Nigeria during the neo-liberal socio-economic reforms undertaken in that country between 1999 and 2005.
