In recent years, the ease of use and collaborative nature of the wiki has made it a popular tool in many libraries. Georgia State University Library has hosted an internal wiki since 2003, and since its inception it has been utilized in many different and innovative ways. This article will provide an overview of some of the more interesting uses of the GSU Library wiki, specifically, its life as a reference guide, training manual, committee meeting and planning ground, home for material price quotes, and finally, as a place for entertaining work-related content.

The Evaluation Of A Diversity Program At An Academic Library, Zheng Ye (Lan) Yang, Brenda White
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article describes recent diversity programming at Texas A&M University Libraries, and the evaluation of that programming. The Libraries created a Public Relations Associate for Diversity Programs and Events Coordinator position, who works with a Diversity Program Coordinating Committee. The coordinator and committee worked to meet diversity goals in communication, coordination, and celebration. They surveyed Libraries' faculty and staff on the impact of diversity programming. Most favorable programming included panel discussions by international students and by Libraries staff members with disabilities. The survey results have identified strengths and weaknesses in the program as well as suggestions for future programming.

We used functional MRI and the anesthetic agent propofol to assess the relationship among neural responses to speech, successful comprehension, and conscious awareness. Volunteers were scanned while listening to sentences containing ambiguous words, matched sentences without ambiguous words, and signal-correlated noise (SCN). During three scanning sessions, participants were nonsedated (awake), lightly sedated (a slowed response to conversation), and deeply sedated (no conversational response, rousable by loud command). Bilateral temporal-lobe responses for sentences compared with signal-correlated noise were observed at all three levels of sedation, although prefrontal and premotor responses to speech were absent at the deepest level of sedation. Additional …

The Cub Century, Richard C. Crepeau
The Cub Century, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Cubs’ fans are a hearty lot. Now only a year away from a "Century of Futility" one gets the strange feeling that two historical forces will collide next baseball season and the result could be of cataclysmic dimensions. Will the Cubs continue in their futility, or will they trump their own futility in a transcendent futility by denying themselves a distinctive badge of symmetric futility inherent in a perfect century of failure?

Book Review: The Fade-Away, Scott D. Peterson
Communication Faculty Publications
Even without the baseball on the cover and the reference to Christy Mathewson's out pitch, fans of baseball fiction should have no doubt that The Fade-away is a sport novel. The town baseball team is the heart of Port Newton, as revealed by the newspaper clippings that make up a number of the book's chapters. Baseball is the main concern of the book's narrators, from former-player Doc Fuller to second baseman Calvin Elwell, and Sophie Fuller, Doc's daughter and Calvin's girlfriend.

The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, which began in 1993, is located at Umudike, Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. In addition to many undergraduate programmes, the university set up a postgraduate school in January 1997. In addition to the traditional tripartite mission of universities – teaching, research, and community service, the University of Agriculture Umudike has adopted “training” as a fourth mission, to ensure that its products can go from “Lab to Land.” The University commits it self to the production of educated farmers, the conduct of multi-disciplinary and relevant organized research, and the systematic propagation of new …

Outsourcing In U.S. Cities, Ambulances And Elderly Voters, Matthew J. Holian
Working Group on Interlocal Services Cooperation
Many of the largest cities in the United States outsource emergency medical services. This paper develops a political economy model of city service provision. Empirical analysis of emergency ambulances in the 200 largest U.S. cities finds that a number of variables are significant determinants of amblu- ance outsourcing, including the fraction of a city's voters over the age of 65. This finding provides evidence that interest-group politics are important, and suggests a particular shape of the contracting cost curve.
Managing A Widespread E-Procurement Implementation In Public Healthcare, Tommaso Federici, Andrea Resca
Managing A Widespread E-Procurement Implementation In Public Healthcare, Tommaso Federici, Andrea Resca
Federici Tommaso
In large parts of Europe, the development of healthcare is subject to contrasting forces. On the one hand, there has been an explosion in spending and, at the same time, governments are faced with strict budget constraints. On the other hand, public healthcare is under pressure to be innovative, technologically advanced and to provide increasingly better quality of services. In this context, eprocurement can be seen as an instrument to offer a solution to the first issue of this dilemma. However, e-procurement initiatives in such domain have not been widely deployed, and most of them have not fully delivered the …
