Bridging The Gap: Connecting The Scientific Literature With Learning And Teaching, Katherine O'Clair
Bridging The Gap: Connecting The Scientific Literature With Learning And Teaching, Katherine O'Clair
Library Scholarship
One of the challenges of integrating research activities into the biology curriculum is conveying to students the importance of using the scientific literature to situate their question into the larger framework of scientific knowledge. Consulting the literature and synthesizing information from it is a critical component of the research process, yet it remains difficult to get students to do this using appropriate sources. The sources they do use and cite often fall short of our expectations. How do we bridge this gap and connect students with the best source - the scientific literature? In this workshop we will explore ways …

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to …

The Anchor: 2007
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Barriers To Farm/Ranch Business Succession, David J. Goeller
Barriers To Farm/Ranch Business Succession, David J. Goeller
Cornhusker Economics
Data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests a trend of fewer people entering farming and ranching as their chosen occupation. This trend has been occurring for many years, as the average age of farm operators continues to increase. Many have asked “Why is this happening?” and “What are the factors that create barriers to a career in agricultural production?”

Information Literacy For Branch Campuses And Branch Libraries, James Hooks, Carl Rahkonen, Chris Clouser, Kelly Heider, Rena Fowler
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Although information literacy objectives are a constant, teaching methods and pedagogy must be structured differently in different teaching-learning environments. The Libraries of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) created a new model of library instruction for its branch libraries and branch campuses, based on the embedded or college librarian model. Librarians for music, science, education, and the IUP Northpointe campus have been integrated into the instruction and curricular activities of those locations, some of which include distance education programs. While this model has logistical and political challenges, it has proved beneficial in improving information literacy for both faculty and students, and …
