Citizen And Officer Perceptions Of Community Policing In Ghana: Policing Of, By, And For The People, Or Just To The People?, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews Nov 2007

Citizen And Officer Perceptions Of Community Policing In Ghana: Policing Of, By, And For The People, Or Just To The People?, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This presentation presents initial results of an evaluation of citizen and officer perceptions of policing in Ghana. The Ghana Police Service (GPS) is attempting to transition from a para-militaristic philosophy to a more community-centered approach, developing a domestic violence unit in the past decade and, more recently, a community policing unit. Community policing philosophies, however, face unique challenges in Ghanaian society, such as a deep-rooted (and historically well-founded) mistrust of the police, and a culture with a well-established and trusted “traditional” system wherein matters are settled within communities and impacted by religion, spirituality, and mysticism. This project used official reported …

Intersensory Redundancy Educates Human Infants' Attention To The Prosody Of Speech, Irina Castellanos Nov 2007

Intersensory Redundancy Educates Human Infants' Attention To The Prosody Of Speech, Irina Castellanos

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following study examined how young infants learn to detect the amodal properties available in prosodic speech (e.g., affect, duration, patterns consisting of tempo, rhythm, and intensity changes) in contexts where intersensory redundancy is not available. It is proposed that the detection of amodal properties in redundant audiovisual stimulation can "educate" selective attention (Gibson, 1979), to those same properties in subsequent nonredundant stimulation (Lickliter, Bahrick, & Markham, 2006). If so, then infants pre-exposed to redundant audiovisual as compared with nonredundant unimodal auditory speech should discriminate amodal properties of prosodic speech during nonredundant unimodal auditory habituation and testing sessions. Results confirmed …

Women Of Talent: Gender And Government Appointments In Massachusetts, 2002–2007, Carol Hardy-Fanta, Kacie Kelly

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

Despite the high educational and occupational attainment—and considerable talent—of women in Massachusetts, the state ranks just 22nd in the nation on women's overall share of top executive, legislative, and judicial posts, compared to their share of the population. The goals of this study were to (1) calculate the percentage of women holding senior-level positions in state government at these four points in time; (2) analyze the distribution of appointments by type of position and executive office; (3) provide possible explanations for the status of women’s representation in these positions; and (4) offer recommendations that will serve to promote the appointment …

This article examines the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, focusing on the potential for military conflict. The author, Erika Simpson, explores the geopolitical dynamics and the statements from key political figures that suggest an increasing likelihood of war. President George W. Bush's remarks about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, coupled with similar sentiments from other U.S. political leaders, highlight the aggressive stance of the U.S. administration. With both nations holding substantial nuclear arsenals on high alert, the risks of …

Understanding Ethanol Plant Economics: Will Boom Turn Bust?, David J. Peters Nov 2007

Understanding Ethanol Plant Economics: Will Boom Turn Bust?, David J. Peters

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska, along with several other Midwestern states, is in the middle of an ethanol boom. In the past few years a combination of high oil prices, cheap corn and favorable government policy have driven expansion of the industry. In turn, this has generated an unprecedented amount of industrial investment in many rural communities. However, local governments and economic developers have little information regarding the long-term economic viability of these plants. This information gap limits the ability of local governments to make informed public policy decisions about ethanol plants in their community, especially in terms of local tax incentives and abatements.

The 700 Mhz Spectrum Auction: An Opportunity To Protect Competition In A Consolidating Industry, Peter Cramton, Andrzej Skrzypacz, Robert Wilson

Peter Cramton

This paper is provided in connection with the 2007 Telecommunications Symposium – Voice, Video and Broadband: The Changing Competitive Landscape and Its Impact on Consumers, sponsored by the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (“the Division”). Our focus is on the state of competition in the wireless sector. Maintaining a competitive wireless sector is particularly critical if, as the Division’s agenda indicates, wireless services are to function as a competitive alternative to wireline technologies. Strengthening competition is especially important now after recent mergers that consolidated the wireless industry into a few dominant firms (two to four depending on …
