Lions And Roses: An Interpretive History Of Israeli-Iranian Relations, Marsha B. Cohen Nov 2007

Lions And Roses: An Interpretive History Of Israeli-Iranian Relations, Marsha B. Cohen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This multi-disciplinary research project explores the religious and cultural foundations within the “master commemorative narratives” that frame Israeli and Iranian political discourse. In articulating their grievances against one another, Israeli and Iranian leaders express the tensions between religion, nationalism, and modernity in their own societies. The theoretical and methodological approach of this dissertation is constructivist-interpretivist. The concept of “master commemorative narratives” is adapted from Yael Zerubavel’s study of ritualized remembrance in Israeli political culture, and applied to both Israeli and Iranian foreign policy. Israel’s master commemorative narrative draws heavily upon the language of the Hebrew Bible, situating foreign policy discourse …

Effects Of A Switchgrass Buffer Strip On Soil Microorganisms Near A Field Applied With Endosulfan, Cristina Clark-Cuadrado Nov 2007

Effects Of A Switchgrass Buffer Strip On Soil Microorganisms Near A Field Applied With Endosulfan, Cristina Clark-Cuadrado

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A field study to determine the effects of a switchgrass buffer strip (SBS) on soil microorganisms near a field applied with endosulfan was carried out. Soil samples were taken from a SBS and bare soil area downslope from a field applied with endosulfan at different distances, days, and two seasons (wet and dry). Soil samples were analyzed for endosulfan, soil fungi, and bacteria. Analysis of endosulfan concentrations was done by reversed-phase liquid chromatography. No endosulfan runoff was detected by this method. Analysis of soil fungi and bacteria was done by fungal and bacterial enumeration by plate count method on rose …

Self-Reported Inattention And Hyperactivity-Impulsivity As Predictors Of Attention Network Efficiency, Sanna Elina Lehtonen Nov 2007

Self-Reported Inattention And Hyperactivity-Impulsivity As Predictors Of Attention Network Efficiency, Sanna Elina Lehtonen

Psychology Dissertations

Previous research has shown that individuals endorsing inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity have deficient performance on tasks tapping different aspects of attention. Although there is empirical evidence suggesting that the behavioral domains of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are linked to functioning of independent and separate brain areas and neurotransmitter systems, cognitive characterization of adults presenting with problems within these domains is not complete. The aim for this study was to identify the cognitive correlates of the core behavioral domains that define the diagnosis of AD/HD (i.e., inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity) in a sample of college students, utilizing a computerized attention task, the Attention Network …

Dreamwork With Children: Perceptions And Practice Of School-Based Mental Health Professionals, Rosalia Rodriguez Huermann Nov 2007

Dreamwork With Children: Perceptions And Practice Of School-Based Mental Health Professionals, Rosalia Rodriguez Huermann

Theses and Dissertations

Forty nine public school mental health practitioners (i.e., school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers) completed a survey about working with dreams when counseling students. Most practitioners in this sample reported having at least one student bring up dreams during counseling and spent some time in counseling working with students' dreams. Practitioners addressed dreams more frequently in situations where the student was having troubling dreams or nightmares, and/or was dealing with death and grief. They also acknowledged working with dreams with students who were diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, were emotionally disturbed, suffered from recurrent dreams, were depressed, …

Pathways And Turning Points: Child Maltreatment, Adolescent Outcomes, And Delinquency, Ryan E. Spohn Nov 2007

Pathways And Turning Points: Child Maltreatment, Adolescent Outcomes, And Delinquency, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being is a valuable resource for examining the lives of at-risk youth in a longitudinal fashion. Essentially, I seek to increase our knowledge of “what works?” and “for whom?” I seek to determine if negative pathways of at-risk youth are altered by social factors and professional intervention. This pathway theory is founded on the assumption that individual differences in factors such as cognitive and emotional development lead to trajectories that often lead at-risk youth down paths of negative social and behavioral outcomes. However, I also assume that turning points will be evident in …

Stress-Induced Alterations In Hippocampal Plasticity, Place Cells, And Spatial Memory, Jeansok J. Kim, Hongjoo J. Lee, Adam C. Welday, Eunyoung Song, Jeiwon Cho, Patricia E. Sharp, Min W. Jung, Hugh T. Blair Nov 2007

Stress-Induced Alterations In Hippocampal Plasticity, Place Cells, And Spatial Memory, Jeansok J. Kim, Hongjoo J. Lee, Adam C. Welday, Eunyoung Song, Jeiwon Cho, Patricia E. Sharp, Min W. Jung, Hugh T. Blair

Patricia E Sharp

Acute, inescapable, and unpredictable stress can profoundly modify brain and cognition in humans and animals. The present study investigated the ensuing effects of 2-h variable "audiogenic" stress on three related levels of hippocampal functions in rats: long-term potentiation, place cell activity, and spatial memory. In agreement with prior findings, we observed that stress reduced the magnitude of Schaffer collateral/commissural-Cornu Ammonis field 1 long-term potentiation in vitro, and selectively impaired spatial memory on a hidden platform version of the Morris water maze task. We also observed that stress impaired the stability of firing rates (but not firing locations) of place cells …

Exploring The Values Orientations Of International Accounting Students: Implications For Educators, A. Abraham Nov 2007

Exploring The Values Orientations Of International Accounting Students: Implications For Educators, A. Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The internationalisation of accounting education has grown significantly over the last decade, with Australia now being the third largest provider of international degrees. This internationalisation has brought benefits to both students and academics by widening their understandings and perspectives of other countries and cultures. The diversity has also provided a basis for researching the impact of culture on student’s approaches to teaching and learning. However, no study to date has measured and analysed the tensions that exist between the cultural values of students and educators. This paper reports an exploratory study of postgraduate students enrolled in a foundation accounting subject …

Privacy Policy Assessment For The Livingston Lord Library At Minnesota State University Moorhead, Stacy Voeller Nov 2007

Privacy Policy Assessment For The Livingston Lord Library At Minnesota State University Moorhead, Stacy Voeller

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries are not doing all they should to protect users' privacy. Several sections of the USA PATRIOT Act potentially encroach on this privacy. To preserve intellectual freedom and the flow of information in a democratic society, libraries must adopt privacy policies that tell library users their rights and demonstrate the library's willingness to be held accountable for such protections. The current privacy policy at the Livingston Lord Library at Minnesota State University Moorhead does not take into consideration the various ramifications of the PATRIOT Act because the policy predated the Act by more than 20 years. An updated policy is …
