“Cuando Políticos Y Técnicos Hablan De Gestión Local. Una Mirada Desde La Academia”, Cristina B. Diaz, Natalia Galano

Cristina B. Diaz Mrs.

Although people prefer to associate with winners, there is also a strong desire to support the lovable loser or underdog. In 4 studies, we demonstrate the underdog effect and its delimiting conditions.

When Does Aftermarket Monopolization Soften Foremarket Competition, Yuk-Fai Fong Dec 2007

When Does Aftermarket Monopolization Soften Foremarket Competition, Yuk-Fai Fong

Yuk-Fai Fong

This paper investigates firms' abilities to tacitly collude when these firms each monopolize a proprietary aftermarket. When firms' aftermarkets are isolated from foremarket competition, they cannot tacitly collude more easily than single product firms do. However, when their aftermarket power is contested by foremarket competition as equipment owners view new equipment as a substitute for their incumbent firm's aftermarket product, the monopoly profit is sustainable among a larger number of firms. More strikingly, as long as existing customers have a shorter market life expectancy than incoming customers, for any discount factor, supranormal profits are sustainable among arbitrarily many firms each …

Drinkers And Bettors: Investigating The Complementarity Of Alcohol Consumption And Problem Gambling, Michael T. French, Jc Maclean, Sl Ettner

Michael T. French

Regulated gambling is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States with greater than 100% increases in revenue over the past decade. Along with this rise in gambling popularity and gaming options comes an increased risk of addiction and the associated social costs. This paper focuses on the effect of alcohol use on gambling-related problems. Variables correlated with both alcohol use and gambling may be difficult to observe, and the inability to include these items in empirical models may bias coefficient estimates. After addressing the endogeneity of alcohol use when appropriate, we find strong evidence that problematic gambling and alcohol …

The Rhetoric Of Self Defense, Janine Young Kim Dec 2007

The Rhetoric Of Self Defense, Janine Young Kim

Janine Kim

The rhetoric of self-defense is a powerful instrument in the hands of legal actors to shape our understanding of justified violence in society. This rhetoric is based not in the legal definition of self-defense but rather in the paradigmatic situation of deadly response to deadly attack, which offers useful guidance in interpreting the law's required elements. However, the paradigm also tends to embrace claims of morality and right that threaten to expand self-defense beyond recognition to consider inappropriate values such as vengeance and punishment.

In this Article, the author argues that self-defense should be viewed not only as a moral …

Reducing Adolescents' Perceived Barriers To Treatment And Increasing Help-Seeking Intentions: Effects Of Classroom Presentations By General Practitioners., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

The Building Bridges to General Practice (BBGP) program is an outreach initiative (written by the first author). It aims to reduce young peoples’ perceived knowledge- and belief-based barriers to engaging in treatment and to increase their behavioral intentions to consult a general medical practitioner (GP) for physical and psychological problems. By increasing intentions, the BBGP program aims to increase actual consultations with a GP for both types of problem. The current paper is the first of a series that report results from a larger multi-cite research project, developed and led by the first author, which examines the impact of BBGP …

More Revisions In Realism: Hobbesian Anarchy, The Tale Of The Fool, And International Relations Theory, Giulio M. Gallarotti Dec 2007

More Revisions In Realism: Hobbesian Anarchy, The Tale Of The Fool, And International Relations Theory, Giulio M. Gallarotti

Giulio M Gallarotti

Thomas Hobbes has been hailed as a major intellectual precursor of realist theory among international relations scholars. Such veneration has brought about ample reactions from various scholars who aver that the use of Hobbes and his vision of anarchy as analogies for building greater theories of international relations is problematic at best. Yet while such critiques of the realist analogy have been abundant, they have devoted scant attention to important passages in the Leviathan (i.e., the tale of the fool in Chapter 15) that would produce greater clarity about Hobbes’ logic regarding the state of nature. Indeed, a careful textual …

Epa And The Venture Capital Community: Building Bridges To Commercialize Technology, Joann Slama Lighty Dec 2007

Epa And The Venture Capital Community: Building Bridges To Commercialize Technology, Joann Slama Lighty

JoAnn S. Lighty

Venture capital investors report that there is a growing interest in environmental technologies, spurred by awareness of global issues such as climate change, as well as the diminishing sources, high costs, and environmental consequences of carbon-based energy, and the increasing costs and decreasing availability of other essential resources such as clean water.

Significant investments are being made by the venture capital community in clean energy-related technologies, including "cross-over" technologies that yield both energy and environmental benefits. Although the growth potential for most environmental sectors is expected to continue to rise through 2010, the most substantial growth is expected in the …

Stigmatization, Substance Use, And Sexual Risk Behavior Among Latino Gay And Bisexual Men And Transgender Persons, Douglas Bruce, Jesus Ramirez-Valles, Richard T. Campbell Dec 2007

Stigmatization, Substance Use, And Sexual Risk Behavior Among Latino Gay And Bisexual Men And Transgender Persons, Douglas Bruce, Jesus Ramirez-Valles, Richard T. Campbell

Douglas Bruce

Following the minority stress model as a framework, we examine the associations between racial and homosexual stigma, substance use, and sexual risk behavior among a respondent-driven sample of Latino gay and bisexual men and male-to-female transgender persons in Chicago and San Francisco (N = 643). We use structural equations to test such a model and disentangle the possible effects of the different stigmas and their corresponding dimensions (i.e., perception, experience, internalization). Findings revealed distinct pathways to sexual risk. Two are typified by experienced homosexual stigma and internalized racial stigma via multiple drug use, and two are characterized by experienced racial …

Borrowed Derivational Morphology In Late Middle English: A Study Of The Records Of The London Grocers And Goldsmiths Dec 2007

Borrowed Derivational Morphology In Late Middle English: A Study Of The Records Of The London Grocers And Goldsmiths

Chris C. Palmer

This study compares the use of native nominal affixes (-ness, -ship, -hood) with borrowed, potential affixes (-cion, -ance, -ity, -age, -ment) throughout the English portions of the multilingual (French, Latin, English) records of the London Goldsmiths and Grocers of the early fifteenth century. Attempting to locate evidence of the naturalization of these forms--the process by which these endings become derivational morphemes in the general English lexicon--the paper develops the notion of local productivity. This measure combines both quantitative and qualitative data to show that, even in smaller corpora, historical linguists can find evidence of the morphological status of different potential …

Dissolving The Diaspora: Dialogical Practice In The Development Of Deep Multiculturalism, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking Dec 2007

Dissolving The Diaspora: Dialogical Practice In The Development Of Deep Multiculturalism, Paul W. Nesbitt-Larking

Paul W Nesbitt-Larking

This article is an exposition of deep or critical multiculturalism that is grounded in a mutually respectful dialogue. Such multiculturalism names historical oppressions, recognizes the structural causes of injustice and inequality, and is profoundly open to cultural critique, challenge and change. In order to promote such a multicultural practice, the article makes the case for a dialogical politics of deep and mutual respect in which ethno‐religious sensibilities are validated and welcomed in their rich diversity. In doing so, the article draws upon the authorʼs empirical research on the Muslim minority in contemporary Canada.
