Citizens in all fields need to understand how science and technology affect policy, business, and personal decisions. The shortage of trained scientists and engineers is a small indicator of a much larger problem: insufficient knowledge and understanding about science and technology across our population. The educational system must respond dynamically to prepare our population for the complex, evolving, global challenges of the 21st century. Advances in technology are poised to meet these educational demands. Cyberlearning offers new learning and educational approaches and the possibility of redistributing learning experiences over time and space, beyond the classroom and throughout a lifetime. We …

Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire And Their Homegirls: Developing An "Oppositional Gaze" Toward The Images Of Black Women, Carolyn M. West Dec 2007

Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire And Their Homegirls: Developing An "Oppositional Gaze" Toward The Images Of Black Women, Carolyn M. West

Carolyn M. West

First, I will discuss why the Mammy, Jezebel, and Sapphire images were created, why they persist, and how they evolved into contemporary images of, among others, the strong Black woman, freak, and gangsta girl. Second, researchers have documented a link between the internalization of negative stereotypes and chronic health problems, psychological distress, and low self-esteem. Accordingly, I will discuss how the Mammy image can contribute to role strain, which is the challenge of balancing multiple roles, and to concerns about physical features, including skin color, hair texture, and weight. Next, I will discuss how the Jezebel image shapes perceptions of …

Implementing Geographic Information Technologies Ethically, Harlan J. Onsrud Dec 2007

Implementing Geographic Information Technologies Ethically, Harlan J. Onsrud

Harlan J Onsrud

Spatial technologies are changing relations among citizens, between citizens and businesses, and between citizens and their governments. Profound implications regarding our relationships with each other are being raised by the expanding use of mobile, spatial, and context-aware technologies, the building of interoperable coordinated spatial data infrastructures and pervasive sensor-networks, the use of location as the foundation for many current and future business and scientific information systems, and the widespread enablement of individuals to gather their own spatial data, report it to others and generate their own spatial resources. How can we within the geospatial community better weave our way through …

Effort, Intensity And Position Taking: Reconsidering Obstruction In The Pre-Cloture Senate, Kathleen Bawn, Gregory Koger Dec 2007

Effort, Intensity And Position Taking: Reconsidering Obstruction In The Pre-Cloture Senate, Kathleen Bawn, Gregory Koger

Gregory Koger

Effort is a crucial element of the legislative process — writing bills, forming coalitions, crafting strategies, and debating. We develop a model in which legislative decisions are the product of competitive effort by two teams, one trying to pass new legislation, and the other to block it. Teams choose effort levels based on preferences over the policy outcome, political rewards for effort, and opportunity costs, and the team that produces more effort wins. We apply this model to four cases of major legislation from the pre-cloture Senate: passage of the Federal Reserve Act in 1913, the Ship Purchase Act of …

Filibustering And Majority Rule In The Senate: The Contest Over Judicial Nominations, 2003-2005, Gregory Koger Dec 2007

Filibustering And Majority Rule In The Senate: The Contest Over Judicial Nominations, 2003-2005, Gregory Koger

Gregory Koger

This chapter proves a simple point: the Senate could be a much more majoritarian chamber than it is. Presumably, as in the House, the majority party would benefit from restrictions on filibustering. Howevver, senators have been reluctant to make major reforms, even when they are members of the majority party and their party’s agenda is being thwarted by Senate minorities. The”nuclear option” contest over judicial nominations from 2003 to 2005 illustrates one source of this stability: the minority party may refrain from obstruction in the face of a threat to curtail the right to filibuster.

What Mediates The Relationship Between Family Meals And Adolescent Health Issues?, Ruth Striegel Weissman Dec 2007

What Mediates The Relationship Between Family Meals And Adolescent Health Issues?, Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Objective:  To determine whether the frequency of family meals in childhood is associated with positive health outcomes in adolescence through the mediating links of increased family cohesion and positive coping skills.Design : Data were obtained from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS), a 10-year longitudinal study of 2,379 black and white girls assessed annually from ages 9–19. The mediational analysis framework of H. C. Kraemer and colleagues (2001) was used to test the hypothesis that the frequency of family meals in childhood (Study Years 1 and 3) would be related to health outcomes (Study Year 10) …

Rats Selectively Bred For Low Levels Of 50 Khz Ultrasonic Vocalizations Exhibit Alterations In Early Social Motivation, Howard C. Cromwell Dec 2007

Rats Selectively Bred For Low Levels Of 50 Khz Ultrasonic Vocalizations Exhibit Alterations In Early Social Motivation, Howard C. Cromwell

Howard Casey Cromwell

In rats, the rates of 50 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) can be used as a selective breeding phenotype and variations in this phenotype can be an indicator of affective states. The 50 kHz USV is elicited by rewarding stimuli (e.g., food, sexual behavior) and therefore can express a positive affective state. Conversely, the 22 kHz USV is elicited by aversive stimuli (e.g., presence of a predator, social defeat) indicating a negative affective state. In the present study, we tested the effect of selectively breeding for 50 kHz USVs on a variety of maternal social/emotional behaviors in young rat pups (PND …

Expectation Management: Breaking Ground For A New E-Learning Librarian Position, Julie O'Keeffe, Edward Sanchez Dec 2007

Expectation Management: Breaking Ground For A New E-Learning Librarian Position, Julie O'Keeffe, Edward Sanchez

Edward Sanchez

Higher education has moved aggressively into the online course delivery environment over the past five years. What began as a slow trend has exploded into a full-fledged arm of the education industry. It is critical that libraries provide effective support to students in this environment and give them the same opportunity for academic success as their peers who are physically in the classroom.

This article will describe challenges that libraries need to examine before adding an instructional design librarian to their staff. Grappling with these challenges will empower individuals to better define the librarian’s role and provide a solid foundation …

Product Quality, Reputation, And Market Structure, James D. Dana, Yuk-Fai Fong Dec 2007

Product Quality, Reputation, And Market Structure, James D. Dana, Yuk-Fai Fong

Yuk-Fai Fong

Firms in an oligopoly market can more easily maintain a reputation for a high quality experience good than a monopolist or firms in a competitive market. Intuitively, selling an experience good of unknown quality is like selling a primary good of known quality and a secondary upgrade of unknown quality. When a monopolist or a competitive firm deviates in the price or quality of its upgrade, they can anticipate that consumers will no longer buy the upgrade, but the profit they earn from their primary good is unchanged. On the other hand, when an oligopoly firm deviates in the price …

Ability Grouping And Academic Inequality: Evidence From Trinidad And Tobago, Clement (Kirabo) Jackson Dec 2007

Ability Grouping And Academic Inequality: Evidence From Trinidad And Tobago, Clement (Kirabo) Jackson

C. Kirabo Jackson

In Trinidad and Tobago students are assigned to secondary schools after fifth grade based on achievement tests, generating large differences in school and peer quality. Using instrumental variables to address self-selection bias, I find that being assigned to a school with high-achieving peers has large positive effects on examination performance, particularly for girls. This suggests that ability grouping (or school tracking) reinforces achievement differences by assigning the weakest students to schools that provide the least value-added. While students benefit from attending schools with brighter peers on average, the marginal effect is non-linear such that there are small benefits to attending …

Consumption Of Sc45647 And Sucralose By Rats Selectively Bred For High And Low Saccharin Intake, Nancy K. Dess, C. D. Chapman, D. Monroe Dec 2007

Consumption Of Sc45647 And Sucralose By Rats Selectively Bred For High And Low Saccharin Intake, Nancy K. Dess, C. D. Chapman, D. Monroe

Nancy K Dess

Mammals' affinity for sweet tastes exists alongside dramatic variation among species and individuals in responses to sweeteners. The present paper focused on consumption by Occidental High– (HiS) and Low–Saccharin (LoS)-consuming rats in 23-h 2-bottle tests of 2 sweeteners for which few data from rats are available: SC45647 and sucralose. Every HiS and LoS rat preferred SC45647 to water at every concentration, with HiS rats consuming it more avidly. Most HiS rats preferred sucralose to water at one or more concentrations; some HiS rats and most LoS rats avoided sucralose at every concentration. However, both HiS and LoS rats preferred a …

Health Services Use In Eating Disorders, Ruth Striegel Weissman

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Background
This study examined healthcare services used by adults diagnosed with an eating disorder (ED) in a large health maintenance organization in the Pacific Northwest.

Method
Electronic medical records were used to collect information on all out-patient and in-patient visits and medication dispenses, from 2002 to 2004, for adults aged 18–55 years who received an ED diagnosis during 2003. Healthcare services received the year prior to, and following, the receipt of an ED diagnosis were examined. Cases were matched to five comparison health plan members who had a health plan visit close to the date of the matched case's …

Enhanced User Experiences Through Relationship Management, Michiel E. Moll

Michiel E Moll

Within libraries the need to be able to relate clearly to the customer and their needs is paramount. Although Customer Relationship management software does exist, fundamentals underlying the philosophy need to be in place first. For this librarians need to use three principles that are expressed as: 1. Be yourself, 2: Integrate as a team, 3: Go boldly!.

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison Dec 2007

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison

Sarah Beaubien

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of resources used in …

Reducing Adolescents' Perceived Barriers To Treatment And Increasing Help-Seeking Intentions: Effects Of Classroom Presentations By General Practitioners., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2007

Reducing Adolescents' Perceived Barriers To Treatment And Increasing Help-Seeking Intentions: Effects Of Classroom Presentations By General Practitioners., Coralie J. Wilson

Frank Deane

The Building Bridges to General Practice (BBGP) program is an outreach initiative (written by the first author). It aims to reduce young peoples’ perceived knowledge- and belief-based barriers to engaging in treatment and to increase their behavioral intentions to consult a general medical practitioner (GP) for physical and psychological problems. By increasing intentions, the BBGP program aims to increase actual consultations with a GP for both types of problem. The current paper is the first of a series that report results from a larger multi-cite research project, developed and led by the first author, which examines the impact of BBGP …
